AirPlay not working after ios 11 update

Trying to play music from iPhone 7 with iOS 11 to my Sony SRS-X88 AirPlay speaker. Sometimes iPhone connects to AirPlay but there is no sound and sometimes it does not connect at all.

Does anyone experience the same problem after update to iOS 11?

iPhone 7, iOS 10.1.1

I have noticed that since I loaded ios11 AirPlay is just awful. Sometimes it works with Apple TV some times it doesn’t. If there is an ad prior to a YouTube video it almost always gets an error after the ad. I then must disconnect and reconnect airplay to play the video. I seldom had problems with AirPlay prior to iOS 11.

I believe the problem (of my Marantz M-CR510 receiver no longer working with Airplay after upgrading to iOS 11 is now finally solved).

At the urging of a second level support engineer when I called in to Apple’s support number (1-800-MYAPPLE), I used iTunes to completely reset my iPhone to factory settings. Then I set up the phone as a new device, and, viola, I could again send music to the Marantz from my iPhone!

My next step was to erase all content and settings on the iPhone and restore it from backup. And again it worked. Problem at last solved. Thank you, Apple.

You might (as I did) ask why just erasing content and settings would not do the trick. Why reset the phone using iTunes? The answer is that iTunes does a more thorough reset because it removes and then reinstalls the operating system (iOS), which the Reset of all Content & Settings that you can do just using the iPhone itself, does not do.

My next step is to follow the same procedure with my iPad pro, which has the same problem.

You can find instructions on how to do the iTunes reset by Googling.

Good luck to others who have posted with the same issue. I hope this fix works for you as well!

Wow, that's a pretty extreme fix, and it should not be necessary, but I'm glad it solved your problem. I am having a similar but different problem. I use AirPlay from iPad to Apple TV for Amazon Video. Before I upgraded to iOS 11, it worked very well. Now, the connection drops after 2:50 (2 minutes, 50 seconds) of streaming. The connection persists when I am only screen mirroring. But as soon as I start streaming in the mode where video appears only on the TV, a timer starts somewhere and it's going to drop 2:50 later. I've tried a lot of the usual suspects. The problem is consistent. It's hard not to blame iOS 11.

After going through the standard less involved fixes - rebooting both the iPad and Apple TV and resetting network settings on the iPad, and, finally, turning off Blutooth on the iPad (all of which I first went through at Apple’s suggestion), I would consider doing what I did if the problem persists.

First, back up your iPad to iCloud, then connect it to a Mac running the latest version of OSX and iTunes, and then do the factory restore (if you Google “factory reset with iTunes”, you should find instructions.). It sounds harder than it really is - actually it’s pretty straightforward.

Once you’ve done the iTunes reset, set up the iPad as a new device and see if Amazon streaming is now fixed. If not, I suggest making an appointment at the Genius bar at the closest Apple store.

If it does work after you’ve done the iTunes reset and set your iPad up as a new device, erase all contents and settings (under Settings>General>Reset and restore from your iCloud backup. If it works after that, you’re home; if not, time for the Genius bar.

There definitely is something flakey concerning Airplay in iOS 11. It apparently does not affect all iOS devices, so I am guessing it could be a low-level memory leak, which can often be fixed with a fresh install of the OS. That’s why the iTunes reset may fix it, as it did for me. Upgrading to the iOS 11 point releases Apple has done so far — 11.0.3 is the latest as of October 19th — did not do anything for me, but you also could try that before going the iTunes route.

Good luck!

Even after iOS 11.0.3, which have not resolved issue with AirPlay in my case (all iOS devices does not want to "play" with my Pioneer SC-2023) I still hope, that some dedicated people from Apple are reading this forum and will come with less extreme solution (then complete resetting of the device), which will fix issue with AirPlay.

As shown in another thread, the fix to my problem was simple. I was having problems with video via AirPlay disconnecting after 3 minutes, which I think is not the main subject here. It turned out I was initiating AirPlay in the wrong way, using the Mirror function in the Control Panel. That's the only way I knew. It worked before iOS 11. The two other methods are to use the icon under Play Music in the Control Panel, or to use the (other) AirPlay icon in whatever video application you are using. These worked perfectly. I had not been aware of either. It does not sound like the problems here will be so simple, but I wanted to share this FWIW.

Hello:

This looks like a minor UI tweak in iOS11 that has left some of us scrambling.

To start AirPlay simply swipe up to access the control panel tiles and look for a music title playing. Don’t go to the AirPlay screen mirroring icon. Notice in the right hand corner of the tile there is a blue wifi icon. Press on that and let the information drop down. All your AirPlay / Apple TV sources will appear as in the past.

If you don’t see a song tile simply start a song in Music to get things going.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for your suggestion, but my problem is not fixed by following your suggestion.

I get the drop down list of Airplay devices by clicking the appropriate Airplay icon, which is accessible in multiple ways, none of which worked when I tried to send audio from my iPhone 7+ or iPad Pro to my Airplay-compatible Marantz M-CR550 receiver after I upgraded to iOS 11.

Many others on this thread have reported the same problem sending audio to other manufacturers’ Airplay compatible devices.

A senior Apple advisor contacted through Apple’s support line suggested their standard “when all else fails” fix - reset your iOS device to factory settings through iTunes.

That fix did work for my iPhone, but only for a few days, and now I’m back to the original problem.

iOS 11.1 is due out shortly. Perhaps that release will finally put this to bed.

Ahh I see. The reason I came looking for a solution was running iOS 11 Airplay for the first time I couldnt figure out what happened to the old AirPlay button and pop up list.

I had problems with Non Apple AirPlay devices( Bowers and Wilkins and Bose). Drove me crazy. For me the only devices that worked well was Airport Express and Apple TV. I am sure HomePod speakers will be the same. AirPlay is magical but very fussy.

Good luck sorting that out.

Ps: I notice the wifi icon is sometimes great and sometimes pulses blue. Regardless of music playing. I wonder what that is all about.

I don’t have any problems sending audio or audio/video (eg., Youtube) to any of my Apple TV’s (and I have several - 2nd to 4th generation).

My problem is sending audio to my Marantz M-CR510 Airplay-enabled receiver. It stopped working when I upgraded to iOS 11.0. Thereafter, neither my iPhone 7+ nor my first-generation iPad Pro could send audio to the receiver via Airplay using the music app. Once in a while I would get an error message saying that Airplay could not connect to the Marantz, but usually there was no error message, just no music.

Finally, resetting the iPhone to factory settings via iTunes fixed the problem on the iPhone, but not on the iPad. However, once I did a synch of the iPhone with iTunes to make sure my music libraries on the iPhone and my Mac were identical, the problem came back. Upgrading to 11.0.1,11.0.2,11.0.3, and finally to 11.1 all failed to fix the problem.

Your problem is a bit different, as you are experiencing audio and video (I surmise video too, since you mentioned Youtube) Airplay connectivity problems with Apple TV.

Different problems, but my suspicion is that all of the Airplay issues being reported in this thread are related to a rewrite of Airplay in order to implement the features of Airplay 2 (none of which I have tried to use or are even interested in using).

Apple is well known for inadequate regression testing that breaks previously working functionality, and I think these Airplay issues are just the latest case in point. I think they will eventually fix the problem(s), but who knows when?

One interesting fact, and one which I believe someone else has mentioned, is that not all iOS devices appear to be affected. For example, my partner also has an iPhone 7+ running the same releases of iOS as I have run, and he has had no problems connecting to the Marantz.

Nov 4, 2017 9:44 PM in response to Yammersmith

Alternatively the developer Marantz, in this case , may need to do some work on their end.

This is common scenario where developers need to update their products following Apple updates. I gather that is what the developer conferences are about, Apple helping developers ready their products.

I’m running into similar problems. with Shaw Open Wi-Fi. Since iOS11 I haven’t been able to log into a Shaw hotspot. Shaw is apparently “working on the problem.”

Also I have discovered a few little problems viewing Readdle PDF files in AppleFiles folder. A problem I believe traces back to Readdle.

It’s not always Apple’s problem when they update OS releases. The developers sometimes run into problems keeping their products up to date with Apple’s releases.

Of course. But I am not sure that applies in this case. Last June, Appleinsider reported that Apple would be supplying firmware updates to its partners to enable Airplay 2 functionality — the ability to send an audio stream to multiple devices at the same time (incidentally, this capability has been available on the Mac for years). But the legacy functionality of Airplay was supposed to still work. It doesn’t, not even on Apple TV.

I have been contributing over on the Bose forum on the topic of AirPlay and its expected release.

There is much anticipation hoping Airplay 2 will bring Apple Music to the Bose SoundTouch platform. Apple tech support confirmed AirPlay 2 has not been rolled out yet. There is no expected date announced yet. The Forum consensus is that AirPlay 2 will be released to coincide with or after HomePod.

I am not convinced that will mean Apple Music will be added into the Bose platform (or other partners) in the same way as Bose has implemented their other streaming services. I think AirPlay 2 will just better enable non Apple devices to receive an Apple originated stream over wifi as in the Bose and Marantz scenario.

I am hoping AirPlay 2 will be backwards compatible to Airport Express and Apple TV. I have a a number of Airport Express and Apple TV routers that run very well using AirPlay 1, streaming to non AirPlay devices such as my Bose speakers.

Interestingly Bose has recently implemented their Wired Input Audio Rebroadcast feature in (Beta). The Bose “Play All“speaker function works very well and sounds great with Airport Express plugged into the AUX port of the SoundTouch speakers. Long live the 3.5mm jack!

Also I have discovered a few little problems viewing Readdle PDF files in AppleFiles folder. A problem I believe traces back to Readdle.

I must amend this statement, the file association problem in Files seems to be affecting more than Readdle app docs. The same is happening with Dropbox. Apple docs such as Pages work fine.
