If you're tapping the buttons in control center, it's a change whereby tapping the icons drops the current connection but does not shut WiFi (or Bluetooth) off; to do that you have to use the slide toggles in Settings.
This is quite handy as you can disconnect from a current troublesome WiFi network without having to remember to reenable it later.
From the iOS 11 manual for iPhone:
This behavior is also covered in more detail here:
Use Bluetooth and Wi-Fi in Control Center with iOS 11 - Apple Support
This is ridiculous. I have the iPhone 6+ and it not only turns on from control center, IT TURNS ITSELF BACK ON FROM TOGGLING IT OFF. AND!!! When I toggle it back on, it turns off. Seriously. I turn WiFi on, it turns itself off. I turn it off, it turns itself on. In the settings no less! This new update is terrible. The whole WiFi process is as buggy as it is stupid. Turning on WiFi from the control center, won’t turn it back on. I have to go into setting. It only goes on and off when IT wants to. This is one of the most entitled things Apple has done, next to “frequent locations.” This isn’t “handy” at all. Is a huge frustrating pain, and I cannot fathom how you think this is okay...unless you’ve teamed up with law Enforcement. In which case, I get it.
Having an older device I like to preserve my battery life and having the radios on really makes a difference even after a replacement battery from Apple.
Unlike you I respect your opinion in this matter, I don’t have to agree with it, like you don’t have to agree with mine. I was merely expressing my views.
Another keyboard warrior strikes again 😂
😂 then why did the Apple “genius” advise me to turn WiFi off If I’m not using it to stop the battery draining? 😂😂 i guess they know nothing about their products either? 😏😏 would make sense they also told me to dunk it in the toilet at least once a month to increase the water resistance
If I’m home I switch the WiFi on and 4G off and while I’m out it’s the opposite. Maybe I just have a faulty cell in my battery? Even tho it’s been replaced?

I spent a lot of years troubleshooting phones professionally. And, sometimes, people didn't want to hear what I said, wanted an easy answer, even if the answer didn't actually solve the problem. So, on an occasion or two, I told people to do things like a forced restart or turn off WiFi or something else that wouldn't hurt. The placebo effect combined with confirmation bias can be very powerful.
Or, that particular genius didn't know what they were talking about. It happens.
It's not handy. It's been killing my battery. You've made it less convenient, not more convenient to use wifi. Now I have to go into control center to turn it on, or let it kill my battery all day as I leave the house. Grrrrr.
Wow! Rude? It's not like I made this up. I could link a dozen articles that say that having wifi on when you don't have a wifi available drains the battery. I attached three. I did search Apple and found that you are correct. What would be polite is to say "It's a common misconception that wifi drains your battery, but it's not true."

It's not really helpful and pretty useless feature in IOS 11. I have to go to settings - bluetooth or settings - wifi every single time, on top of that additional 3D touch to get into airdrop settings to turn everyone setting off.
What you must have meant to say was this is not useful to YOU. It is however, very useful to many of us, myself included. Please don't assume your needs are the needs of everyone and perhaps accept that sometimes changes in technology happen for valid reasons as is the case here.
How dare you say it is useless? I use it almost daily. And it is a great improvement in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth management.
Why do you have to go to Settings? How about "Hey Siri, turn off Bluetooth" (or Wi-Fi).
To all you people that don't see anything wrong from this update (despite the number of complaints) and that keep repeating the "correct" way to use this setting from now on, or just leave Apple, let me explain the situation from my point of view :
I have an iPhone thanks to my work, and I didn't own any before : I thought it was crazily expensive but its main advantage was to be extra intuitive. That belief was wrong thanks to this "feature" and some others.
Why is it a bad, counter intuitive feature? Let's say : you are boarding a plane (like I do every week for work), you HAVE to turn off WiFi. You thought you did, but you didn't. Imagine if it happened to every user. Plus, when you press the WiFi button, it goes grey. What else is grey? All the functions that are OFF. Easy to get confused really. And I'm not even adding security and health issues.
"But now you know how to use it". To that I say : still a crap update.
Imagine this : when you receive a phone number from someone and you press hold it, you can add it to contacts. Simple right? Now if Apple added a feature of "temporary contact", so that when you do this, it only keeps the contact for a day. Yes, it would be suitable for people who need to call many different guys but only for one or two times, without flooding their contacts. BUT for a whole lot of people, it would be a downgrade, because they would need to copy the number, go to contacts, add new contact, paste the number. You get my point?
Now, for the last thing, why people don't want to just quit Apple and go to Android or else : because they love so much of what Apple offers, because they like the idea... because they want it to get better, simply. This has been the best experience they have and they only want it better, is it that difficult to understand?
To Apple : I won't be a customer of yours anyway, but I don't mind having missteps and this kind of wrong understanding of your customers. Just listen to them and adapt, that's it.
Cheers to all
EDIT : I'm quoting Apple on this link Batteries - Maximising Performance - Apple (AU) . To the ones telling me that it's for Macbooks only and not iPhones, please know that I will consider you as stubborn idiots.
"Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi consumes power, even if you are not using it to connect to a network. You can turn it off in the Wi-Fi status menu in the menu bar or in Network preferences."
WiFi does consume power but in the current day it is minimal with any WiFi chipset in the past 5 years.
As far as your suggestion to Apple about its customers it is extremely clear you are not an Apple user and pay no attention to the company. Your advice is exactly the opposite of what Mr. Jobs believed and how he set up the company to operate.
I’m sure you’ve found your answer in other replies.
Apple- while I doubt you’re likely to revert the changes back to on/off, might I suggest adding a feature whereby holding the icon for WiFi or Bluetooth turns them off while a tap disconnects? Feels like an intuitive solution and compromise.
He would be well advised to read the iOS 11 user manual, because his post just proves he doesn't yet know enough about his iPhone to know what he's really talking about. Both points, such as Airplane Mode and creating a contact from a received call in recents aptly illustrate this.
Then when you turn off WiFi in settings, the phone keeps reminding you to turn it on again with a pop up to choose to go to settings. This was one feature that would have been better off if they left it alone.
Even if this option exists (the temporary contact one), please IMAGINE it was the way I described it. Then you will get my point. I don't understand why you say my analogy is wrong just because the comparison is made up. Would you say the same for the famous allegory of the cave? That it is wrong because all the cave part is made up and there is no way that would happen? I hope not. That is my point.
I put it very clearly I didn't know much about the iphone, I don't deny that
