iPhone not getting text notifications

Since upgrading to iOS 11, my iPhone 5S no longer makes a sound or displays a notification on my locked screen when I receive a text message.

I've checked that "Do Not Disturb" is turned off, and that the sound mute button is not turned on. I also checked in Settings / Sounds and I have a sound selected for Text Messages.

When I get a text message, the only way I know I got it is if I click on the home button to start up the display. In addition to not making any sound, the text message doesn't even light up my phone display when I get it, but if I click on the Home button to turn on the screen, I can see the notification.

This is a bit of problem, I depend on text messages quite a bit in my job and now I have no idea if I'm getting a text message unless I keep checking my phone. How do I fix this, or is this a bug in iOS 11?

I have checked or tried the following:

  • Do Not Disturb is not turned on at the time.
  • Bluetooth, when on, is not connected to any other device.
  • Updating to iOS 11.03 didn’t fix the problem.
  • I do not have an Apple Watch.
  • Restarting iPhone makes no difference.
  • In Notification Settings, Show Previews is set to Always.
  • Messages notification settings are: Allow: ON, Badge App Icon: ON, Show in CarPlay: ON, Show on Lock Screen: ON, Show in History: ON, Show as Banners: ON (Temporary), Show Previews: ON, Repeat Alerts: Twice.

I still don't get notifications when receiving some text messages. Unless I go into Settings and turn Bluetooth off.

I encourage everyone to report this bug directly to Apple here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple

Ive had this issue for a long time with my iphone 6 plus, have tried been on beta images for a while so thought it was just my own fault. Have recently got a brand new iPhone X and have the same issue. Thought it was the bluetooth. I did find a resolution for the time being that I'll have to deal with.

I have Messages logged in on my Macbook Pro, my Mac Mini, and my Ipad as well as the iPhone. I logged out messages on all the devices except my iPhone and have since gotten a sound every single txt message. I think it has something to do with the first few devices which get the txt message will make a noise but not the phone for some reason.

About 4 days ago, I started experiencing this same problem. No banners or sounds with my messages. Tried everything on this thread and nothing worked. Powered my phone off both ways several times. Then my daughter fixed it! She plugged my phone into a charger, THEN powered it off. When it came back up, all was fine again. Crazy fix, but happy to have it working again.

As an update, they sent me a new X and I set it up as a new phone as they requested which means you lose all ur texts which given they were sympathy texts I sort of wanted to keep them so spent hours copying them manually. Anyway same exact issue. Please people if your phone is under warranty, call apple do the trouble shooting and then request a new phone until this starts costing them money, they are going to I claim each time someone calls with the problem, “oh we have never heard of this problem” as they did when I called and mentioned the thousands of users with the exact same issue on their own discussion boards. If only an news article would come out on this they would all of a sudden find a solution I am sure. Ask for a replacement phone and keep asking for one until it is addressed by apple. They are selling a phone claiming Bluetooth capabilities yet it either functions asn expensive Bluetooth dongle or a phone with no Bluetooth capabilities. Not to mention apple watches are rendered worthless if u switch off ur Bluetooth. Send in your phone for replacement and keep doing it until they come up with a solution. And no the new phone set up as new did not solve the problem. So I will be contacting them again to request another phone until it is fixed.

I had the symptoms mention in this topic and was equally frustrated.... I fixed it in the messages app - when you receive a message from someone of course you can swipe to the left to delete it - there is a new option there next to the delete "show alerts" / "hide alerts" - right next to the delete. Make sure its "show alerts". that fixed it for me. I must have pressed it accidentally when trying to delete a message.

Thank you so much to the person who figured out that turning off Bluetooth will bring back message notifications! You can't imagine the problems I've encountered because of this bug. I'm so grateful. Unfortunately, I bought the Apple Watch, so I have to turn Bluetooth back on, only to have this happen again eventually, but at least now I can turn Bluetooth off and on again every once in a while to make sure I won't miss all of my text messages. Very disappointed in the quality control. Having Bluetooth turned on and receiving a text message is not exactly a corner case...

While that’s a great suggestion if you had gone through the pages of people posting here it isn’t relevant. Each one of us with this issue has stated that the dnd both in settings and individual texts are not set. This is a systemic Bluetooth issue where if Bluetooth is on we do not receive any notifications whatsoever. Has nothing to do the do not disturb settings. Thanks tho.

ok 2b2b - this is actually working for me, right now at least. This is the first thing I have tried that actually DOES work. I'll be so happy if it is working tomorrow too... Works with both message and phone.

I also have settings > general > accessibility > LED flash for alerts > ON and that makes the phone light up like a police car for phone calls... but it works even if it won't ring.

I do hope this fix still works tomorrow - thanks 2b2b

Well TomNyc u r correct in being skeptical! Only thing I know is that when I called to get the new phone replacement they told me it was an “emerging issue” that they were working on. I pointed out that their own apple boards have had it reported for over 6months. I too encourage people to report it, go thru the trouble shooting steps and request a new phone if under warranty if it isn’t fixed.

Oh my gosh! The same with me! I receive text messages from everyone on my lock screen with exception to my husband. He will send me a text from his iPhone to mine and I have no idea unless I unlock my phone and tap on my message app. Very frustrating as this is how we communicate when I'm at work. I have tried all suggestions and nothing has worked. For what we spent on our phones, this shouldn't be an issue!

Thanks for the suggestion but the phne is not on night setting with the crescent moon. I have added the flasshing light whijch helps but only when the phone is visible nearby. that can e done by going to Settings - General - scroll way down to "hearing' section - turn on LED Flash for Alerts. Does nto solve the problem but I get some messages in a timely fashion.
