iPhone not getting text notifications

Since upgrading to iOS 11, my iPhone 5S no longer makes a sound or displays a notification on my locked screen when I receive a text message.

I've checked that "Do Not Disturb" is turned off, and that the sound mute button is not turned on. I also checked in Settings / Sounds and I have a sound selected for Text Messages.

When I get a text message, the only way I know I got it is if I click on the home button to start up the display. In addition to not making any sound, the text message doesn't even light up my phone display when I get it, but if I click on the Home button to turn on the screen, I can see the notification.

This is a bit of problem, I depend on text messages quite a bit in my job and now I have no idea if I'm getting a text message unless I keep checking my phone. How do I fix this, or is this a bug in iOS 11?

I have checked or tried the following:

  • Do Not Disturb is not turned on at the time.
  • Bluetooth, when on, is not connected to any other device.
  • Updating to iOS 11.03 didn’t fix the problem.
  • I do not have an Apple Watch.
  • Restarting iPhone makes no difference.
  • In Notification Settings, Show Previews is set to Always.
  • Messages notification settings are: Allow: ON, Badge App Icon: ON, Show in CarPlay: ON, Show on Lock Screen: ON, Show in History: ON, Show as Banners: ON (Temporary), Show Previews: ON, Repeat Alerts: Twice.

I still don't get notifications when receiving some text messages. Unless I go into Settings and turn Bluetooth off.

I encourage everyone to report this bug directly to Apple here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple

I have a new iPhone 8 and an iPad Pro and have the same issue on each device. I did not have the issue on my old iPhone SE and iPad. I had Blue tooth on those devices. I use my Blue tooth with my fitness tracker and my car so i don't want to to turn them off. It should be compatible. My IOS is current at 11.2.1. I am very disappointed with this. In the past I could choose to silence/unsilence text sounds by the side button.

I will join the list of upset iPhone users whose phones will not give notifications with paired with Bluetooth. My profession demands that I be connected to my phone while driving via Bluetooth and be able to receive Text Message notifications. No sound except for incoming phone calls through my trucks speakers.

Surely Apple support staff read these forums?

It sad to see the list growing and still no fix from Apple. Having tried most of the fixes offered by others, I am still in the same situation as you. I will not turn off my bluetooth. That defeats the purpose of having that feature and would necessitate turning it on everytime you need bluetooth. Alll was fine until several weeks ago.

Have the same problem - no vibration for texts in locked screen. I'll share with you that one can use the Apple Watch for such notifications. Very annoyed. To Apple; a locked iPhone in my pocket while at work is very much needed and was a useful feature in previous OS releases. Quality and design for intended customer use seems to be getting less attention lately.

i spent 3+ hours with tech support yesterday was told that engineering would call me today. instead it was tech support the 1st gentlemen acknowledged it's a known problem but the supervisor later said it was't because many peoples phones are working fine. supervisor told me that he would have 2 'trust' that i had done all the troubleshooting that the previous day's tech support documented, implying that i didn't. That in order for him to be 'sure' i had done all the troubleshooting that he would need me to spend hrs with him doing the same thing i did yesterday. restore phone erase watch re-pair watch reboot etc. set up phone as new....multiple times. instead of acknowledging that they have a bug & actively seeking a solution, they resort 2 questioning whether their customers who spend hrs on with tech support actually do all the steps...really? Supervisor said because i wouldn't re do the same steps as were documented yesterday by their own tech support, the engineering team would only suggest i redo all the same steps. It's clear that there is either a software glitch with bluetooth or a hardware issue with bluetooth. If everyone on this thread says they only get notifications if they turn off bluetooth, there is something wrong. we have a $1200 device that is either a bluetooth device and not a smartphone or a phone with no bluetooth capabilities. I noticed it after coming out of an area with no cellular nor wifi service. all settings for notifications are correct and my watch is uncharged so quite locked. "solution" was a replacement. will see if it works or has the same issue.

When I have any BT device connected the phone becomes silent for lock screen sounds. The problem has become worse and worse with each upgrade (now 11.2.5 on 6s.) On my BT earpiece: I hear lock/text sounds, and an external BT speaker: I no longer hear lock/text sounds -- while either device is connected I get no lock screen sounds on the phone.

When the external speaker is connected I used to get notification sounds at the proper volume through the speaker (no matter the music volume or pause/playing) thru iOS 11.1 - after 11.2 I don't any more. This is very frustrating and has been the source of some trouble already. If I disconnect the device the phone plays notification sounds -- I don't need to turn off BT -- I have filed a bug report

Apple: always play notification sounds and/or sound effects thru the phone !!

I would encourage people 2 call tech support ask for it 2 be escalated to engineering and after doing all their troubleshooting and it still doesn’t work ask for a new replacement phone. Maybe after the thousands of people here on the boards ask for replacement phones they will acknowledge it’s an issue and get a fix out for it instead of wasting their customers’ time on “troubleshooting” when they already know none of the steps they suggest work.
