iPhone not getting text notifications

Since upgrading to iOS 11, my iPhone 5S no longer makes a sound or displays a notification on my locked screen when I receive a text message.

I've checked that "Do Not Disturb" is turned off, and that the sound mute button is not turned on. I also checked in Settings / Sounds and I have a sound selected for Text Messages.

When I get a text message, the only way I know I got it is if I click on the home button to start up the display. In addition to not making any sound, the text message doesn't even light up my phone display when I get it, but if I click on the Home button to turn on the screen, I can see the notification.

This is a bit of problem, I depend on text messages quite a bit in my job and now I have no idea if I'm getting a text message unless I keep checking my phone. How do I fix this, or is this a bug in iOS 11?

Have you checked Settings>Notifications>Messages to make sure that you have either Banner or Alert selected as the notification type and that you have sounds enabled there?

I have done so:

"Summary: When notifications (e.g, iMessage) is not permitted on the lock screen, neither the expected "Temporary" nor "Persistent" banners appear after unlocking.

Details: Prior to iOS 11, when a notification was not permitted on the lock screen, a banner (drop-down from top, or modal dialog) was displayed upon unlocking the device (when, for example, viewing the home screen). As of the new notification architecture, unless a notification is permitted on the lock screen, there is no notification (other than transient sound or vibration). The prior behavior was not only preferable (after unlocking, a notification was displayed to ensure it was noticed), but also the current behavior is contrary to the UI in Settings (because the user is given the option of having a banner displayed)."

I think it could be a problem with the way do not disturb works. Your meant to get a half moon show up in the top bar when it’s on and that stops tones in locked screen. The half moon doesn’t always appear. I wouldn’t say it’s a problem with being turned on and off I would say it might be a deeper iOS problem. Not sure how to report this to Apple hope it makes it way to them from here

I've never observed (nor seen any previous reports of) the crescent moon not appearing when DND is turned on. It is possible to hide the alerts for individual text conversations. That will not result in an icon.

If you're seeing some anomalous behavior with DND, you should start by doing some basic troubleshooting. Start by restoring from a back up.

I have same issue with my IPhone 7 plus and apple watch 2...

Strange thing - some notifications work - for example from SMS messages, but some - not. Specifically when the apple watch is connected via the Bluetooth to my iPhone and iPhone screen is locked - no notification/ no sound, but when you unlock the iPhone or wake it up - you see the notification is there - in the notification area...

But no sound was played, and screen was not waked up.

Also, no notification coming to the watch...

But if i disable the bluetooth - everything works just fine.

Just download the update - 11.0.3 - hoping that that update will fix the issue - but its still there. Still no notifications...

Just like others in this thread, I have this problem on my new 8 Plus on 11.0.3, and after trying EVERYTHING mentioned, I will get very temporary (like one or two alerts) resolution, and then always goes back to no alerts.

The one and only thing that solves the iMessage alerts is to turn off Bluetooth. Even if Bluetooth is on with NO devices connected, I eventually end up with no alerts.

I have a smart watch as well (Garmin VivoActive 3 in my case). Turning off Bluetooth is not a solution. My wife has the 7 plus on the same software version and a Garmin smartwatch connected by Bluetooth and she has never had this issue. It is very frustrating trying to come up with a commonality to all our phones and this problem.

I think your right about the Apple Watch because I do have one paired, but the person I live with doesn’t have Apple Watch but if he leaves Bluetooth on he SOMETIMES doesn’t get an alert with text message. It’s hit and miss. As soon as Bluetooth turned off it works every time. Annoying when you want to use Bluetooth headphones.

When I have any BT device connected the phone becomes silent for lock screen sounds. The problem has become worse and worse with each upgrade (now 11.2.5 on 6s.) On my BT earpiece: I hear lock/text sounds, and an external BT speaker: I no longer hear lock/text sounds -- while either device is connected I get no lock screen sounds on the phone.

When the external speaker is connected I used to get notification sounds at the proper volume through the speaker (no matter the music volume or pause/playing) thru iOS 11.1 - after 11.2 I don't any more. This is very frustrating and has been the source of some trouble already. If I disconnect the device the phone plays notification sounds -- I don't need to turn off BT -- I have filed a bug report

Apple: always play notification sounds and/or sound effects thru the phone !!

I fixed it in the messages app - when you receive a message from someone of course you can swipe to the left to delete it - there is a new option there next to the delete "show alerts" / "hide alerts" - right next to the delete. Make sure its "show alerts". that fixed it for me

You are probably the 50th person who's posted this as a solution in this thread. It isn't the solution. Many have already confirmed that "hide alerts" is not turned on but their notifications are still not working, including mine.

The problem is clearly with Apple's messaging and notifications system, and after several iOS updates the problem still hasn't been fixed and Apple has yet to acknowledge the problem and probably never will until it has been fixed, if it ever gets fixed.

The only way to let Apple know about this is by sending feedback to them via this form: Feedback - iPhone - Apple

Well TomNyc u r correct in being skeptical! Only thing I know is that when I called to get the new phone replacement they told me it was an “emerging issue” that they were working on. I pointed out that their own apple boards have had it reported for over 6months. I too encourage people to report it, go thru the trouble shooting steps and request a new phone if under warranty if it isn’t fixed.

I have viewed most if not all the statements here and nothing worked for my wife's 6s.

I saw something about bluetooth , no joy, mute same thing. Do not disturb nope.

I went to a text that I had sent to her during one of my 20 or so test messages. In the upper right hand corner are 3 dots. clicked on them and it something about location, so I said yes to each of them. You should know that while I was on this site and trying to log in, Apple would not let me, they then sent my wifes phone a code, when they did that the [hone beeped.

After I did the locations, I tried again and the phone worked, that was 5 hours ago, I check every hour and it still works.

It would be lovely if this is what it was for everyone - many posts just like this on this discussion but it is not the problem for most of us.

There is a big list of causes but the most common is that IF you have a Bluetooth device on, especially the Apple Watch, you won’t get the sound notification. A lot of people say a Bluetooth headset will do it too and I - for one - am sick and tired of people saying just turn off all Bluetooth, as if THAT is a terrific fix. I’m not pitching my watch to fix my phone.
