iPhone not getting text notifications

Since upgrading to iOS 11, my iPhone 5S no longer makes a sound or displays a notification on my locked screen when I receive a text message.

I've checked that "Do Not Disturb" is turned off, and that the sound mute button is not turned on. I also checked in Settings / Sounds and I have a sound selected for Text Messages.

When I get a text message, the only way I know I got it is if I click on the home button to start up the display. In addition to not making any sound, the text message doesn't even light up my phone display when I get it, but if I click on the Home button to turn on the screen, I can see the notification.

This is a bit of problem, I depend on text messages quite a bit in my job and now I have no idea if I'm getting a text message unless I keep checking my phone. How do I fix this, or is this a bug in iOS 11?

I have checked or tried the following:

  • Do Not Disturb is not turned on at the time.
  • Bluetooth, when on, is not connected to any other device.
  • Updating to iOS 11.03 didn’t fix the problem.
  • I do not have an Apple Watch.
  • Restarting iPhone makes no difference.
  • In Notification Settings, Show Previews is set to Always.
  • Messages notification settings are: Allow: ON, Badge App Icon: ON, Show in CarPlay: ON, Show on Lock Screen: ON, Show in History: ON, Show as Banners: ON (Temporary), Show Previews: ON, Repeat Alerts: Twice.

I still don't get notifications when receiving some text messages. Unless I go into Settings and turn Bluetooth off.

I encourage everyone to report this bug directly to Apple here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple

Turning off bluetooth didn't work for me anyway. I've tried all the suggestions i can find and even some of my own and nothing works. I get vibrations and banners when I get text messages, but no tones. I was In an Apple store this week getting my iPad Pro gen 2 replaced because of a display issue and I showed hem a problem I was having on my iPhone 8 plus' control center screen. To fix that we reset all settings on the phone, but I'm not sure if that is when I started having the issue or if it was before that. I am on the latest beta versionon both devices. The iPad I had to set up as a new pad and install the beta and the restore my backup. I do have my iPad enabled to receive calls and messages from my phone, but I've always done that and not had this problem. I guess well have to wait for some genius to figure it out!

I tried all the Bluetooth options and turned off do not disturb but none of the messages from some contacts showed up. Eventually I went through my messages contact by contact and in the conversation there is a small i in the top right hand corner. When I clicked on this alerts were turned off, turned it back on and all messgage alerts now being received. Hope this helps 🙂

Correct... I have a 2018 Subaru Impreza and a 2017 Subaru Outback. I bring my iPhone 8 into each, with BT on, and I don’t get any audio notifications (vibrations do work though). When I leave the cars, outside the BT range, everything returns to normal. I can repeat this all day long. Subaru was very interested in it, since they’ve been replacing units thinking it was a Subaru issue. Turns out, as you know, an Apple issue.

I have this issue too on a 6s and Watch 1st gen. I thought it was related to the automatic Do Not Disturb I was using when the phone connected to my car's hands free link. I disabled that, notification worked for a day, and now it's gone. Even when I logged in here, and got the 2 factor authentication, the message with the code did not notify me when it arrived. Some notifications from other apps get through to my Watch, but nothing on the iPhone.

This must be a bug in iOS 11. With over 4400 on this site alone, having this issue, you would think Apple would do something to fix it.

I have viewed most if not all the statements here and nothing worked for my wife's 6s.

I saw something about bluetooth , no joy, mute same thing. Do not disturb nope.

I went to a text that I had sent to her during one of my 20 or so test messages. In the upper right hand corner are 3 dots. clicked on them and it something about location, so I said yes to each of them. You should know that while I was on this site and trying to log in, Apple would not let me, they then sent my wifes phone a code, when they did that the [hone beeped.

After I did the locations, I tried again and the phone worked, that was 5 hours ago, I check every hour and it still works.

I recently got a 7plus to replace years of android use. I am so sorry I made the switch. In the over 10 years of android use I never had the issues I’m having with my iPhone in just a few short months. I am so frustrated with the notifications issue and find it completely irresponsible of Apple and unacceptable service. I still have an old android phone that I am going to reactivate and get rid of my POS iphone. This is ********!! I am calling Apple support tomorrow and if they give me dumb *** responses that will justify my decision. I have done ALL of the suggested fixes aside from standing on my head and counting to 10......nothing has worked.

Okay, so now suddenly after the last iOS update I'm having a new problem. I am now getting some notifications on my iPhone for text messages, but only when I have Bluetooth turned off.

Before the recent iOS update, when I got a text message and read it on my laptop, my iPhone would not play a notification sound because it knew I read the message on one of my other iCloud devices (my laptop). Now my iPhone dings 3 times for each text message I get even if I've read the text message on my laptop.

So this is yet another new Message bug in iOS! Apple hasn't even fixed the other notification problem yet, and now there's a new one. Maybe they tried to fix it and just made it worse?

At any rate, the list of Message bugs keeps growing. Anyone else having this problem, too?

I’m having this same problem and this might be the single handily most frustrating thing in the world. They need to fix this problem ASAP. I even went to the Apple store and they were so shocked they gave me a whole new phone....the next day THE SAME PROBLEM I HAD ON MY OLD PHONE IS OCCURRING ON THE NEW ONE. I started it up and set everything up as a new phone too and it is still messed up. It’s ridiculous and needs to get fixed. I just want to be able to know when someone text me and not have to go into the message app every time. Or even hear my phone vibrate as I got the text message but can’t even see the **** thing. It’s ******* me off and they need to fix it NOW.
