iPhone not getting text notifications

Since upgrading to iOS 11, my iPhone 5S no longer makes a sound or displays a notification on my locked screen when I receive a text message.

I've checked that "Do Not Disturb" is turned off, and that the sound mute button is not turned on. I also checked in Settings / Sounds and I have a sound selected for Text Messages.

When I get a text message, the only way I know I got it is if I click on the home button to start up the display. In addition to not making any sound, the text message doesn't even light up my phone display when I get it, but if I click on the Home button to turn on the screen, I can see the notification.

This is a bit of problem, I depend on text messages quite a bit in my job and now I have no idea if I'm getting a text message unless I keep checking my phone. How do I fix this, or is this a bug in iOS 11?

Okay, so now suddenly after the last iOS update I'm having a new problem. I am now getting some notifications on my iPhone for text messages, but only when I have Bluetooth turned off.

Before the recent iOS update, when I got a text message and read it on my laptop, my iPhone would not play a notification sound because it knew I read the message on one of my other iCloud devices (my laptop). Now my iPhone dings 3 times for each text message I get even if I've read the text message on my laptop.

So this is yet another new Message bug in iOS! Apple hasn't even fixed the other notification problem yet, and now there's a new one. Maybe they tried to fix it and just made it worse?

At any rate, the list of Message bugs keeps growing. Anyone else having this problem, too?

I’m having this same problem and this might be the single handily most frustrating thing in the world. They need to fix this problem ASAP. I even went to the Apple store and they were so shocked they gave me a whole new phone....the next day THE SAME PROBLEM I HAD ON MY OLD PHONE IS OCCURRING ON THE NEW ONE. I started it up and set everything up as a new phone too and it is still messed up. It’s ridiculous and needs to get fixed. I just want to be able to know when someone text me and not have to go into the message app every time. Or even hear my phone vibrate as I got the text message but can’t even see the **** thing. It’s ******* me off and they need to fix it NOW.

After much research, I am convinced that at least in my case, there isn't any setting that will fix this. It's an Apple FEATURE. If you wear an apple watch, and it is paired to your phone, text notifications go ONLY to the watch. So if you turn off Bluetooth on the phone, the watch can't get those notifications, so they go back to the phone.

Ideally, Apple would change this behavior such that the notifications would go to BOTH devices.

But as it stands now, I just turned up the notification volume on my watch, and I haven't missed a text yet.

This started in September 2017:

iOS 11 has a new "feature". In iOS 11, you are allowed to hide alerts from both general SMS and iMessage conversations directly in Messages app on your iPhone and iPad. This enables you to hide alerts from SPECIFIC senders! If turned on, message alerts will not show up on your iPhone or iPad screen once you turned on the hide-alert toggle.

Somehow this toggle was turned on, on my wife's iPhone 7, just for ME . We have no idea how (so she says). I think that possibly the update process did it. For months and months she was missing my text messages because she was not alerted by any means. The only way to know she got a text from me was to manually go to text messages and check. It was maddening!!! She was always texting with others (even during our conversations) but never responded to mine. We practically ended up in divorce court!

Go to text messages, select the text stream for the specific person, at the top of the screen, to the right of the person's name click on the circle "i" and you will see "Hide alerts" with a toggle. Be sure the toggle is turned OFF. Especially for your significant other!

It took me forever to figure this out. Someone does finally mention it at the bottom of this post.

One of you must have "Hide Alerts" toggled to the on position. That is what my wife had. It was hiding all alerts when I texted her so her phone did not alert her in any way. She was missing all of my texts. This "feature" can be set per contact/person. For some reason she had it toggled to on for my contact only so I was the only one she was not being alerted for -- put a strain on our marriage! :-) Go to a text message from your wife or on her phone one from you, and click on the circle "i" at the top right. Scroll down and you should see "hide alerts". Make sure it is turned OFF!

It would be lovely if this is what it was for everyone - many posts just like this on this discussion but it is not the problem for most of us.

There is a big list of causes but the most common is that IF you have a Bluetooth device on, especially the Apple Watch, you won’t get the sound notification. A lot of people say a Bluetooth headset will do it too and I - for one - am sick and tired of people saying just turn off all Bluetooth, as if THAT is a terrific fix. I’m not pitching my watch to fix my phone.
