iPhone not getting text notifications

Since upgrading to iOS 11, my iPhone 5S no longer makes a sound or displays a notification on my locked screen when I receive a text message.

I've checked that "Do Not Disturb" is turned off, and that the sound mute button is not turned on. I also checked in Settings / Sounds and I have a sound selected for Text Messages.

When I get a text message, the only way I know I got it is if I click on the home button to start up the display. In addition to not making any sound, the text message doesn't even light up my phone display when I get it, but if I click on the Home button to turn on the screen, I can see the notification.

This is a bit of problem, I depend on text messages quite a bit in my job and now I have no idea if I'm getting a text message unless I keep checking my phone. How do I fix this, or is this a bug in iOS 11?

I had the symptoms mention in this topic and was equally frustrated.... I fixed it in the messages app - when you receive a message from someone of course you can swipe to the left to delete it - there is a new option there next to the delete "show alerts" / "hide alerts" - right next to the delete. Make sure its "show alerts". that fixed it for me. I must have pressed it accidentally when trying to delete a message.

I have almost the same problem running iOS 11.4.1 on an SE. Text notifications appear on the home screen, but there is often no audible alert or vibration if Bluetooth is enabled. The problem occurs if no Bluetooth devices are connected.

If, however, Bluetooth is enabled *and* an audio device is connected, then the audible alert plays on the connected BT device as expected.

I've had the problem for a while now -- seems to have started following an iOS update,.

Ok, so the top pinned answer from uVr4BsveiHdOxXNI worked for me - disabling bluetooth from Settings (not from Control Center) made notifications light up the phone with the ding (as opposed to phone staying off and notification only showing up when activating the phone).

It turns out in my case that the watch was causing this. Turning off bluetooth only worked because my watch was paired with the phone (active bluetooth connection, ofc) and the watch itself was on silent. So the phone was duly delivering notifications to the watch which was silently discarding them. Un-silencing the watch made the ding come up on the watch - but the phone still doesn't get it anymore.

So at this point the question would be whether it's possible to get notifications (with dings) BOTH on the phone and on the watch.

In my case it’s definately no DND Settings or other Settings because after a clean install the text notifications work fine. And after a period of time the just stop working without doing nothing or changing any settings. After 10 minutes of working fine the just stop showing up on the display and i can just see them an hear the tone when im pressing the HomeButton.

OK, im sorry, that was wrong.

It’s true, that i don’t get any notifications (text messages or iMessages), if the iPhone time is set „in the past“.

If the time is set „in to the future“ sometimes i get notifications, but most of the time not.

Something is definately wrong with Messages and Notification with iOS 12 on an iPhone 6S.

Tested it on another 6S device and same behaviour.

I legit just bought a brand new IPhone 6S and got it on September 24th 2018. Everything was working perfectly, my first issue was downloading apps that were free but they still wanted some kind of payment information. So I go do so, than it tells me my Apple ID Is associated with to many credit cards, when I’ve only used maybe 3 the most trying to fix this so I can download apps. But someone resolved that for me, and NOW MY ISSUE. I went and did the upgrade device for my phone and I got iOS 12 now, ever since I did that that day all was fine. I went to sleep woke up and I’m not getting alerted, or my texts tone is not going off when I get any text messages. So if I’m not looking at my phone every 5 mins I won’t know I got one until I do see it an it will be the next day or hours after the fact. WHY is it doing this? My side button isn’t turned off to silent, it’s on, I went into settings and messages even re picked different sounds for my phone to go off when I got texts but still not a **** thing! I’m getting upset cuz I just spent $ an bought this phone after 2 years of being stuck with a POS prepaid that had no internet or nothing. So here I go back to my iPhone that I love so much but I’ve never had more problems in my years of having every iPhone. That’s why I NEVER updated the software even tho ppl talk **** and say it’s bad I need to do the upgrade, but look what happens when I do. And I’ve done everything I know and I STILL GET NO SOUND OR ALERTED WHEN I GET TEXT MESSAGES!!!! But phone calls and all else come thru and go off with no issues at all. 😑 ugh.

do you have the apple watch? I had problems until I turned off the ringer on the watch and then I could hear my messages come in again.

also - don't mean to offend - but be sure under settings > Sounds & Haptics you not have the volume "change with buttons" on. Be sure that's off. If you have your music turned down low and that button is on, your phone and messages will be turned too low

This is a problem that has been rattling around for a while and it does not seem that there is any one fix. I feel your pain.

If none of this works, read all the posts here - some of these suggestions work for some people.

I had a serious problem with my new iPhone X Max where no photo programs would pull the photos off. I had to do a factory reset and rebuild from scratch. All the apple "geniuses" said "oh did you try a reboot?"
