Podcast app no longer plays next podcast. App stops playback when a podcast is finished.

iOS 11 app no longer plays the next podcast. Why was that removed? If i have episodes 5-10 and i start playback at episode 6 why does the app just stop playback when episode 6 is done and not automatically begin playing episode 7 and so on. This new behavior is junk. I've tried sorting the podcasts old to new and this would work in iOS version 10. The sorting now seems to have no affect on playback. I'm really HATING this new app. It seems now i have to add a podcast to the "up next" list, which is a royal pain. Did the developers even USE this app?! Try driving down the road with 10 episodes to listen to in a show and having to pull the phone out to start the next one. If there is a way to make it play continuously you've hid it very well. Yeah Yeah... add them to the up next.....It should be automatic. HATE IT! Also I now have a bunch of old podcasts that i've listened to years ago showing up as not played. What happened to "Mark as Played"?

I've been messing with this app a little more. To get continuous play sort of like iOS 10 you have to make a station and add podcasts to it. Library > Edit > New Station. This will give you options for play order, how many episodes you want to see and which individual podcasts you'd like on the station. This at least will give you continuous play without having to add each podcast to up next. It's still annoying that going into an individual podcast and starting playback on a particular podcast DOES NOT have auto play functionality like iOS 10 did. I guess I'll have to make a bunch of stations for certain shows that have guests broken into multiple shows so I can listen in order interruption.

Thanks for your response Cyberbiker, and I do appreciate your efforts in trying to inform us. However I cannot see the relevance of "stations". Why is this suddenly necessary, and what benefits does it bring that we didn't have before? Personally it seem to me that Apple have now finished the job of ruining what was a perfectly good app (simple, intuitive and easy to use) prior to iOS 10.

Cyberbiker: while your suggestions are helpful (somewhat) none of what your are telling us is intuitive or obvious any more in this app. It has become almost unusable for no apparent reason by the developers. Before you could set your settings easily to how you wanted to listen to podcasts. You could readily edit the podcasts within a particular show. None of that is available in a simple intuitive an easy manner. The layout of the podcast shows and the controls for each episode are irrelevant to how any normal person wants to listen to them and deal with, usually while driving. And who the **** wants to go find the way to use this app 300+ pages into a manual that no one has heard exists and is in iBooks or some other hidden place. Probably designed by some of the resident "Geniuses" at an Apple Bar

Hi Crawfish I’ve had exactly the same problem I HATE HATE HATE the new podcast app through apple podcasts it doesn’t download every episode the non continuous play is as about as annoying as this gat it’s like you say they really must not of used the app it was perfect in IOS 10 worked beautifully BUT DONT try to contact the customer care team as you will get no where fast and just as frustrated PLEASE APPLE JUST FIX IT!!!!!!! Glad it’s not just me

Thanks Cyberbiker. However if stations are now required, what about updating the app to automatically create a station for each podcast? The problems would be substantially resolved, and app would be more user friendly.

Stopping after each podcast is a problem for me while driving, because I live in a jurisdiction where it is illegal to touch your phone while driving - and with good reason, due to a couple of "texting while driving" fatalities.

Thanks for that. And yeah, I have asked Apple. They don't know, the children working the chat line barely know what a podcast is let alone the changes. It's still not a solution, and next time you're offended by someone saying so, maybe you should just not reply. Attempting to virtually ***** slap me is funny, thanks for that, I needed a good laugh. This is a lame version for sure. Sorry it hurt your feelings but it's a work around, a band aid, it's not a solution.

Glad I’m not the only one. And the solution from apple says make a station ( more work for me to do) or is Siri! Fantastic when driving! So to get my phone to play the next podcast on my phone I have to fiddle with my phone! (Pretty certain the police won’t except that as an excuse!). Why change anything it worked perfect before! It’s harder to find anything on this new format too!! Rolling my phone back and will wait for this to be fixed before I crash my car bad form apple!

This new update really *****. I enjoyed listen to my podcasts in the order they were downloaded. I don’t binge listen to them. Now I have to add them to que and there is no way to see what I have added to que, they do not play in the order I have placed them in que. And the lovely answer of telling Siri to play a podcast might be easy for some, but I work in an office with 4 other people and constantly asking Siri to do something is not possible. The last podcast system was not broke why did you fix it!!!!

Not sure why this cut/paste troll was just now directed to me but I'll respond that nothing new is being stated here.

Notwithstanding my vocabulary it seemed like plenty of people figured out what I meant and agreed. I figured out the "stations" thing. It doesn't change the fact that I've used the podcast app for years with no problem. How do you know "millions of people" are using this app with no problem? Oh, because of silence? Or could it be they just switched to Overcast or that "millions of people" don't log on to this discussion board to discuss it?

No one should need a huge manual to figure out something very simple..play podcasts like we used to.

I'm unsubscribing from this thread because nothing new is being said. I provided my feedback to the Apple developers (as they don't read here) and I created stations (having to touch the same podcasts two or three times to get it to play), and I'm playing around with Overcast.

Thanks for the cut/paste answer I've read a few times already though.

Thanks for that PDF, it's a wonder why it's not offered as a file straight from the factory. But the specific issue I have with the Podcasts app is that I can't see the Up Next list. This PDF states to go to Play Next/Play later menu and "swipe up" to see the Up Next queue. When I swipe up I only get the new screen with all the abbreviated controls (camera, light, screen mirroring, timer, bluetooth, wireless, etc.).

Apple soured me to their products right about when they release OSX. Updates and "upgrades" seem to be change for change's sake and with no cohesive philosophy for usage of the various components. Mac products used to "Just work". Now I struggle to keep up with the features so I basically shut off the iCloud and have given up trying. I have too many other concerns than taking a deep dive into the nuances of individual apps.

I have never felt so strongly about any change to iOS ever. I love iOS and I have 0 intention of ever purchasing an Android Phone or Device, however, I think this is worth pointing out.

The new Podcast app in iOS 11 is absolutely the worst upgrade ever. The UI and UX are quite literally a regression from the previous version. Something as simple as proceeding to play the next podcast without me needing to sit down and curate my play list. Why would I want to do that. I already did that when I subscribed to the podcast.

What pushed me over the edge to write this post is this: I'm about to do a long task (so I do as I was forced), to queue up a list of Podcast episodes to play while I do this task. I soon realized that the app allowed me to queue the same episode twice in the "Play Next" list, it's bad that it allowed me to do that without any dialogue to confirm, but worst, there was no way to clear that queue.

This is just total garbage.
