I solved this issue with the following steps:
1. Disconnect usb/lightning cable from your phone
2. Powercycle your phone by powering off and powering on.
3. Open Apple Music and play any downloaded song. You must have at least one song in your Music App. If not, sync one song from iTunes or download from iTunes Store.
4. Connect USB/lightning cable while music still playing on phone.
5. Watch and listen as the audio magically transfers from your phone to your car audio.
Tip: If you’re Spotify user, remember to follow the same procedures by starting up the Music app first. I was unable to play any audio from my phone, regardless Music, Spotify, YouTube and etc. It somehow resolved after following the steps above.
Apple doesn’t reply here or even read these posts. You have to submit feedback instead and even from that they rarely reply. For these issues they refer you back to the auto manufacturer.

Yes I have contacted them several times. Have a callback in the morning and they informed me that the engineering team is working on a fix. I think I have 4 tickets open.
This is not solved. This is a real issue that over 800 customers have reported. This blank answer needs to be removed. This is pretty infuriating.

I have a '11 Hyundai Sonata, all I did was unpair and paired again. That seemed to work for me. My watch was unaffected. I guess the main driver is iOS 11.xx
It becomes apple's problem when I need to replace my phone with one that is compatible with my car. My stereo didn't change, my iPhone's operating system did.
The OP just said Bluetooth wasn’t working. I haven’t gotten that unsupported device message in a while - maybe they fixed it in a later release

Just a disclaimer - I’m on an 8+. I doubt it’s a hardware interface issue at the phone level but you never know.
I’m currently on the newest iOS 11.4 I believe. Still same issue. The 30 pin adapter was new but I have another new one I guess I’ll try just in case.
