iOS 11 Auto Brightness

Is anyone else having issues with auto brightness in iOS 11?! Since I updated to 11, this feature barely works now! I’ll be in bright lights and it’s very dim. And in darkness, it gets way too dark. I saw multiple pages mentioning this in a Google search, though the problem there was that this has been going on ever since the betas were out for iOS 11 it sounds like.

I had the same issue. I realized that for some reason the zoom function was on. I know this should not have anything to do with brightness but when I turned zoom off, the screen got brighter and now I can even see the display in the sun.

Also, just for kicks, I turned on zoom and the screen stayed bright. Obviously a glitch but took me days to find.

zoom: Settings/General/Accessibility/zoom/toggle off or on.

Good luck!

Hello typhanus,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding that after updating your iPhone, your display appears dim or dark when using auto-brightness. I'm happy to help.

If you haven't already, try restarting your iPhone. This can resolve many unexpected behaviors.
Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If the issue persists, reinstall iOS with iTunes. This can resolve possible software issues. When reinstalling iOS, iTunes will completely remove your current software and install a fresh version. While iTunes will try to do this without removing data, it's a good idea to make sure you have a recent backup before trying this step.
How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Follow the steps in the link below to reinstall iOS with iTunes:
If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Have a great day!

Soloution that worked for me: recalibrate sensor by 1.) going to the darkest room of your preference, then turn off auto brightness, do this by - going to Settings/General/Accessibility/Magnifier / Auto brightness / turn off

2.) Now go back to Settings/Display & Brightness/ then slide the toggle all the way to the lowest settting.

3.) Go back again to the auto brightness setting by repeating step one (1) except this time turn auto brightness back on.

Go to a lighted area or turn on the lights and Auto brightness should now function properly. If it still doesn’t then bring to your nearest authorized Apple service center.

It seems I have the same issue and maybe the original question or concern was misinterpreted (I could be very wrong). Maybe the conversation has devolved into a pseudo-resolution.

Regardless, i dislike that the auto-brightness option has been placed so far into settings (general> accessibility > display accommodations). Furthermore, the auto-brightness feature, itself, does not work as accurately or efficiently as previous iOS releases. I am quite convinced this is an iOS flaw rather than an iOS installment or reinstallment issue. I just purchased my second iPhone 7; this time iOS 11 preinstalled on the iPhone.

Still the auto-brightness feature fails to accurately execute.

If nothing else, I would really favor the placement of the auto-brightness option in the control center and in the settings>display.

I would telephone Apple and report the issue as I have noticed it’s becoming for prevalent throughout Apple users. Apple telephone support will assist you through some troubleshooting and most likely get you do to a sysdiagnostics on it and send to them. I’ve had my iPhone replaced three times as their tech people say it shouldn’t be happening. I am requesting a refund as by consumer law it’s classified as a major fault that they cannot seem to fix so I can choose my remedy. Good luck and keep us updated.

I Think the problem is when you touch the brigth level

For example:

If you calibrate the brigth in the dark or light, the sensor works well.

But if you move the level of bright the automatic sensor turn off and freeze the level of light in that point and dont move anymore to up or down.

If you turn off the automatic sensor in a dark room and turn it on, the level of light go all down, so if you want a little more light you have to touch the level again and the automatic sensor turn off

So is a bucle of pain in the ***

Hello Typhanus...YES. I am and have been having ISSUES with iOS 11 Auto Brightness.

It does NOT adjust to changes in ambient light. PERIOD.

It can be DANGEROUS when using the phone for GPS. When driving at night, the screen can be WAY TOO BRIGHT and distort forward AND passenger side visibility. When driving during the day, the screen can be WAY TOO DIM and require attention to be distracted from the road to brighten the screen.

This can be a SERIOUS problem and is NOT a Settings problem.

Having the same brightness issue on IPad Pro running IOS 11.3.1. The screen would auto dim coming in from bright sunlight and sometimes not go to max brightness when returning to bright (sun) ambient light. Zoom, Display Accomidations, and True Tone are all turned off, rebooted, etc. yet the screen still auto dims and brightens when ambient light changes. Sounds strange but I tried the suggestion of pushing the side butto three times and now the display seems to stay at the user set brightness setting.
