How can I play podcasts continuously on iOS11?

The old podcast app would play episodes in your preferred order (oldest to newest, etc) continuously without having to add each episode to the “Up Next” playlist. Is there a way to automatically play all episodes without having to add every episode manually?

Hi,

I too am really frustrated with this change and came across your post when trying to find an answer.

The only workaround I have managed to find for this removed feature is to create a ‘station’ for the individual podcast in question. I had a couple of stations already setup when I updated to iOS 11 where I’d add podcasts of a similar theme e.g. Soccer or technology and realised that the station settings allow you to choose the playing orders (see screenshot). You can then choose to play oldest to newest and they continue onto the next episode. This is a workaround and not a real fix but hope it helps.

Thank you to everyone who has offered advice. I have decided to create Stations, but I have run into another issue. Not all unplayed episodes are showing in my stations, only those episodes unplayed since i have subscribed. For example, I just subscribed to a new (to me) podcast with >100 existing episodes, but only one episode is showing in my unplayed episodes station. Any advice on this? Is it because that’s the only episode that has been downloaded to my device? I don’t want to download all 100 episodes to have them show up in my station.. thanks!

Thanks everyone for their advice. I downloaded Overcast and so far it's great. It was a pain going through and downloading all my shows that were in Podcasts but it is worth it thus far. I can play them automatically and in chronological order. Maybe Apple will learn a listen but I'm guessing not. I encourage everyone to send feedback to Apple. I did.

I agree, this is incredibly frustrating. Even if you could just see the playlist you have to manually create it would be a little better. I’m a product manager at a software company, and for the life of me I can’t understand why they made this change. Usually you can figure out the logic for it, but this one makes zero sense to me. Please fix this!

I’ve been so frustrated with this! The new Microsoft podcast app- oh, wait, I mean the new Apple podcast app- is cumbersome, dreary and seems redundant. Why all the different screens? And whose stupid idea was it to take away the auto play? Apple needs a “Back to the past” button for those of us who prefer the simplicity of the older version. And a tip to Apple: simplicity and intuitive design are what drove us (your loyal customers) into your arms in the first place. Do you really want to screw that up?

Agreed, the new version of Podcast doesn't work for us. I kept Podcasts for video podcasts like TED Talks and Washington Week and downloaded the free version of Overcast. That will play a sequence of audio only podcasts while your hands are doing something else like running or using podcasts to lull you to sleep. I unsubscribed the audio only podcasts from Podcasts and subscribed to them on Overcast.
