How can I play podcasts continuously on iOS11?

The old podcast app would play episodes in your preferred order (oldest to newest, etc) continuously without having to add each episode to the “Up Next” playlist. Is there a way to automatically play all episodes without having to add every episode manually?

Hi,

I too am really frustrated with this change and came across your post when trying to find an answer.

The only workaround I have managed to find for this removed feature is to create a ‘station’ for the individual podcast in question. I had a couple of stations already setup when I updated to iOS 11 where I’d add podcasts of a similar theme e.g. Soccer or technology and realised that the station settings allow you to choose the playing orders (see screenshot). You can then choose to play oldest to newest and they continue onto the next episode. This is a workaround and not a real fix but hope it helps.

I agree. Before the podcast app was very functional and simple. It just WORKED! Now, it is very complicated and dysfunctional. Not simple, not easy to use, not apple like!

Now it cannot play episodes continuously, you cannot find your play next list, and if you want to find where you left, you have to browse, browse and keep browsing until you eventually find where were were before, if you are lucky. This is a horrible user experience design. Please bring back the old user interface, it is better in every way.

May I join the choir. The continuous play function gets me through my Seattle dog walk and workout.

Podcasts have come of age. Apple recognizes that fact with its hugely graphical update. That said, it *****.

I simply want to play my podcasts sequentially in Listen Now or episodes in a specific podcast. It was raining this morning. Fumbling under a couple layers of clothing while juggling a dog lease to hit the next selection is needlessly cumbersome.

The burgeoning podcast market and new graphics are great, but should not take precedence over functionality. Fix it, Apple.

As was suggested in one of the other replies, I offered this feedback to Apple. Thanks contributors to this thread for helping me articulate my frustration. Feel free to copy/edit and submit.

For some reason, the Podcast play function has become very difficult to use on my iPhone after the upgrade to 11. Please restore it as it was in 10. Every aspect of this is cumbersome. I can't imagine what the design team was thinking. There are now so many steps to get a podcast to play and worse... no continuous play. What were they thinking? Podcasts on my iPHONE need to be simple AND CONTINUOUS. I use it in my car, riding bike, BOTH requiring extended hands-free operation. Why would you force me to wade through so many steps each time a podcast episode ends (vs. advancing to the next automatically). PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE FIX THIS. This experience is shaking my confidence in the "advancements" Apple is making.

It sounds like we are all on the same page… The page of frustration. I have submitted four different “feedbacks” to Apple regarding the changes that have occurred as a result of the new operating system. Hoping that they would be read somewhere I have sent them via iPad feedback, iPhone feedback, and Podcast feedback. I was told by the person who sells Apple products that one guaranteed way to get things read is to send a physical letter via snail mail to Tim Cook. Everything will be read by someone if it is sent in writing. If something doesn’t happen soon that’s my new plan.

The best I've found so far is to make a list by picking episode by episode. Second episode can be marked Up Next, and subsequent ones Up Later to be added to the bottom of the list. But I preferred how it was before where I could create a playlist on iTunes on the computer. Podcasts now show up in Music app but are empty despite being full in iTunes. I have asked Apple to fix this on the feedback page. I hope you all will too.

I too am so disappointed in the recent changes to podcasts. I loved being able to mark podcasts either played or unplayed and then letting them keep playing as I work or drive or walk. I listen to podcasts for different reasons... some for news, some for entertainment and others to learn (often listening several times). The former versions of the podcasts app better suited my needs.

I have this problem too! I urge Apple to fix it ASAP. Meanwhile, I've found a way to set semi-continuous play: Play any random episode first and press "..." on the podcast show's main page (middle right) and select "up next". Go the the current playing episode page and drag up the screen to show play list. You will find all the episodes up next!! However, you'll find the current playing one is also (first) in the list, need to delete it by left drag it and delete. Try! Works both on my iPad and iPhone. Does it work for you?
