How can I play podcasts continuously on iOS11?

The old podcast app would play episodes in your preferred order (oldest to newest, etc) continuously without having to add each episode to the “Up Next” playlist. Is there a way to automatically play all episodes without having to add every episode manually?

Hi,

I too am really frustrated with this change and came across your post when trying to find an answer.

The only workaround I have managed to find for this removed feature is to create a ‘station’ for the individual podcast in question. I had a couple of stations already setup when I updated to iOS 11 where I’d add podcasts of a similar theme e.g. Soccer or technology and realised that the station settings allow you to choose the playing orders (see screenshot). You can then choose to play oldest to newest and they continue onto the next episode. This is a workaround and not a real fix but hope it helps.

I agree. Before the podcast app was very functional and simple. It just WORKED! Now, it is very complicated and dysfunctional. Not simple, not easy to use, not apple like!

Now it cannot play episodes continuously, and if you want to find where you left, you have to browse, browse and keep browsing until you eventually find where were were before, if you are lucky. By then, you will have spent about 10 minutes just trying to find an episode. This is a horrible user experience design. Please bring back the old user interface, it is better in every way.

I am also completely frustrated with the new podcast app. I spoke with Apple this morning and they said in order to fix the problem, several hundred people must complain on the apple.com/feedback website under the app Podcast. So everyone go write a complaint to fix the problem

If you place Subscriptions in a Station, the Episodes play automatically from top to bottom. You can set the episode Sort By order for the Station to Oldest-to-Newest, the reverse or manually position episodes using the Edit button at the upper right corner of the Station page (see image below). You can then click the top episode in the station to play all episodes in sequence or ask Siri to “Play xxx Station in Podcasts.”

Imagine if you were listening to an album on your iTunes app, but to make it play the next song, in order, you had to put that album in a Station, first.

It's ridiculous that you have to add an extra step - create a "Station" first, then add the podcast to that station.

You'd have to set up a station for every album you had on iTunes if that was the case. I subscribe to lots and lots of podcasts, I don't want to have to create a separate station for each podcast I listen to.

The best place to make a complaint, is here, Feedback - Podcasts - Apple

The best place to listen to your podcasts - until Apple decide to fix this issue - IN EPISODE ORDER WITHOUT HAVING TO DO A THING, with a sleep timer that will stop playing, when the timer runs out, is the Overcast app.

Who wants to do that? I don't. I just want it to work as it used to- press play, it plays continuously.

I see this reply isn't even threading correctly. What the **** Apple!

I left my podcast feedback stating my objection to the removal of the continuous play feature at the address below. I’m happy to hear that so many people use podcast episodes to fall asleep to and that I’m not just weird. Thank you community.

continuous play is not working for me either. i'm disheartened by the redesign of ios 11 and the podcast app. all of the fonts are bigger, there are massive images/logos of the podcasts so it makes navigating more cumbersome. It now takes several more clicks to play a podcast. this is the same bloat that makes itunes so unwieldily.

This “UPDATE” is horrible. The old app was easy and fast. Two clicks and you were playing your podcast. Now there’s 2 or 3 more click to find your episode and another click to play it. And it won’t play the next episode automatically like before. Why would they change that? This update make no sense.

Yesterday, someone suggested Overcast. There is a free version and a paid upgrade (without the adverts). I downloaded the free version last night and it does play the sequential podcasts. But, you have to resubscribe to each of the podcasts to which you'd already subscribed on the Apple Podcast.

Just covering themselves with glory, is Apple.

I subscribe to OSX daily and they provide a route to go back but there are some provisos and some concerns. Here is a link to their page. Since I'm not sure what version backup I have I decided not to take the risk because you could lose all your data (possibly) if you don't have a backup in 10. But read the article and see if you dare. I am happy at the moment using Overcast to run my podcasts.

I now suggest that you keep Podcast to use with video podcasts. I have discovered that Overcast will not play the video portion of a video podcast. So, we still need Apple to go repair the serious downgrade they have performed on the latest version of Podcast. What were they thinking?

Agreed with everyone else. Extremely broken and it happened without warning. I suggest that Apple offer a Downgrade option back to iOS 10.3.3 and the old Podcasts app as a temporary fix and don't bug me about another upgrade until this is set aright, like in iOS 12. Or 22. Or however long it takes.
