iOS 11 Mail push notifications problem

Since upgrading to iOS 11 I only get Mail push notifications when in Mail or the Home screen. Otherwise all my queued up messages appear when I open Mail. I see the same behavior on my iPhone and iPad. Is this a known problem, and is there a workaround?

iPhone 7, iOS 11

To summarize what has already been posted many times in this thread:

Push

Push email - that is, email that appears on the phone as soon as it reaches the server - requires the email provider to send push notifications. Currently, Apple's iCloud email and Microsoft Exchange are the only email providers that support Push. Google used to, and Yahoo used to, but neither of them support Push with Apple's email app anymore. You must use the gmail and yahoo app, respectively, to receive Push email from gmail or yahoo

Fetch

If your provider does not support Push you can set up Fetch on the account. It will check for email periodically; you set how frequently you want it to check.

Manual

Email will only appear when you open the mail app.

You must set which you want to use in the phone's Settings for each account.

Hi Everyone, I have an iphone X with 11.2.6. I had been receiving mail notifications for my AOL & Gmail emails on my lock screen (which is what I want) when I first got the phone, then they stopped showing up. After HOURS spent trying to figure out the problem on my own + talking to Apple support + Genius Bar, I finally figured out from this thread that the problem might be the latest OS. Why no one I spoke to at Apple even theorized that is beyond me, but when I brought it up with my most recent Apple support person, she confirmed that the OS is the problem (beginning with 11.1.1). She said the issue only just recently was officially noted in Apple's system as a bug, and that it should be addressed within the next two updates. She also said that some users have reported that turning OFF the mail notification setting for "Show in history" has proven to be a workaround for some people (it didn't work for me). Hope this is helpful. For now, my workaround is to download the Gmail and AOL apps, which DO post notifications on the lock screen. (Note I have all of my mail/fetch/push/notifications settings set correctly, as far as I and everyone at Apple can tell. We also tried reloading my whole OS, NOT including the back-up. Nothing worked.).

I also had this problem, tried everything, push, fetch, clearing network settings et cetera with no joy although it did work on the odd occasion, iPhone 8, IOS 11.3 beta (15E5189f).

I wanted to get rid of the Gmail app (I have 2 Gmail accounts) and all seemed good with Mail until this issue with notifications.

I installed Edison Mail and now everything works as it should. I don't see how it isn't an issue with the Mail app as the push notifications work fine with Edison as do all my iPhone notifications, badges et cetera.

So, either Gmail are specifically blocking Apple Mail or there is an issue with the Mail app.

Interesting, but wrong guess. Push notifications require TWO parties to make it work. A device that can RECEIVE notifications (in this case, an iOS device) and a service provider that SENDS notifications. if the email provider does not send email notifications the fact that your phone can receive them is irrelevant; you aren't going to get any. Gmail and Yahoo stopped sending Push notifications to accounts using Apple mail. They only send Push notifications to their own respective apps.

I hope I can, but I am just another user like you. If I had the problem (I don't with 11.2.6 and didn't with 11.2.5) I would restore iOS using iTunes. The first time I would restore my backup. If that didn't fix it I would restore again, and set it up as a new phone, and just add the Push email account. If it still doesn't work then it probably is an issue with the version or an incompatibility between the version and your phone. But I'm pretty sure one of these troubleshooting steps will fix it, as based on the small number of reports it doesn't appear to be a widespread issue.

Your summary is 100% correct in my humble opinion. If you have the same email problems with iPhone X that many of us with us earlier models also have, then it can hardly be blamed on the “ slowing down / preserving battery life” issue. Clearly iOS 11 is the problem and nobody at Apple, to the best of my knowledge and also my experience when speaking to Apple Care staff, seem prepared to acknowledge it. Disappointing is putting it mildly since I would venture the opinion that, with the possible exceptions of Safari & Message, Mail is the most used App by iPhone / iPad users. For many, our livelihoods depend on responding quickly to emails which is no longer happening with Apple hence why I switched to Edison Mail.

To their credit, Apple Support on Twitter played 50 questions with us. They wanted to determine whether it was the IOS or software added. We left it when they asked us to do the following and made no reference to any push issue from mail ISP, you would think they would know:

1. ) restore phone to out a "new" out of box state, then setup and check mail.

2.) if that worked, they would work with us to do a limit restore of info in our backup.

3.) If it still did it with the "new" state restored, they would get with engineers.

We/my wife opted to download Edison, all works normal using the Edison Application.

BTW, my wifes phone was a wiped 7 plus that was restored with her 6s plus backup, which worked fine, but also had not been updated. We then gave that phone to my daughter, she accidently updated it and guess what, you got it.

Also, my old blackberry Q10, same mail ISP, does not do this. (No it's a pre android)

Download the application called Edison.

Unfortunately, as MANY very annoyed people continue to point out is that fetch is not working properly either and is on fetching when the app is running. For me, not only must the app be open, but The ipad must be awake. so if the ipad/iphone is asleep, generally i wont get mail. but sometimes.... not reliably and not every 15 minutes as it is set to do.

something unrelated or possibley related, i am also having a problem when all of my mail disappears, and has to re downloaded. Ill be in the midst of reading an email, and it will disappear in front of my eyes. i will then have to wait as 10,000 emails re-load. first the headers, then the messages. a slow process. this is happening a lot now, sometimes more than once a day, sometimes once a week. but it only started after the introduction of ios 11

It seems that Apple has marked this issue as a low priority or simply couldn't care. From September ( iOS 11 intro ) until today is one third of a year ! Like many on this forum, I have wasted hours doing reboots, reinstalling from Backup and speaking to Apple Care. What is staggering is that Apple do not even acknowledge there is a problem.

Best solution is to drag your Apple Mail App from the dock onto the main screen and replace it with Edison Mail App. Keep the two running in tandem until you are satisfied that the Edison Mail App is how the Apple Mail app should be - quick, clear and simple to use. Then ditch Apple Mail until such time as Apple start to pull their finger out and solve this problem.
