iOS 11 Mail push notifications problem

Since upgrading to iOS 11 I only get Mail push notifications when in Mail or the Home screen. Otherwise all my queued up messages appear when I open Mail. I see the same behavior on my iPhone and iPad. Is this a known problem, and is there a workaround?

I also have this issue since upgrading to iOS 11 (i'm currently on 11.0.2 on my iPhone 7+ and just experienced the issue). I run exchange and gmail accounts on my phone and sometimes neither update until i manually go into the mail app and refresh. Exchange is set to push and worked perfectly on iOS 10, while gmail is set to the new auto fetch. A hard reset of the phone fixes this issue, at least temporarily. still ***** to miss email when the issue reemerges.

The Automatic option on Fetch doesn't appear to actually ever make an attempt to connect to the email servers when my phone is asleep. It doesn't check for any email until I launch the Mail app itself.

Using Gmail's official app notifications come through nearly instantaneous with when I send the email - precisely as it should.

Apple's Automatic Fetch "solution" is seemingly DOA.

Doing a test now with a Fetch set for every 15 minutes to see if that works and if notifications appear…

Nope - that didn't check for email either.

Also having this problem. Prior to iOS 11, phone received push mail in Gmail app and fetched mail in Mail app not long after. I have been running a Gmail account through iOS Mail as well as Gmail app with same account. I run the Gmail app for push benefit because of my job. It always worked. Always same results on WIFI or cellular data, locked phone or open. After the update, Gmail app no longer retrieving mail unless I am IN the app. iOS Mail app fetching mail without a pattern. One will show up immediately if in the app, within ten seconds if app is in background, but five emails will take an hour if the app is closed and the phone is locked. No locked screen notices AT ALL despite that setting checked in notifications. I wake up in the morning to no email alerts at all, but then I enter the app and find seven waiting for me from hours before. The phone is not behaving according to the settings.

As for the phone overriding the ability of the Gmail app to even function at all, I don’t know if that is a Gmail software bug or an iOS 11 ****** move. But this is deeply aggravating and hurting my actual livelihood. I tried all kinds of settings changes and toggling. Powering off. Restarting. Removing accounts and apps and reloading them. Nothing. Went for the ultimate Hail Mary and factory reset. Guess what? iOS 11 is still on the phone despite the factory reset. So I lost everything on my phone except the terrible new buggy software. Beware.

Anyway, back to my original post, which is not related to Exchange or GMail. I find it weird and frustrating that I get Mail push notifications fine on my Mac, and even on my iPad which is running the same version of iOS and as far as I can tell is configured the same. Sometimes when I fiddle with the settings on the iPhone (most recently setting Fetch New Data from Automatically to Every 15 Minutes), I get the push notifications for a while but then they stop after a while.

A few days ago I tried doing an iTunes backup and restore which wasted an entire evening of my life and didn't help the problem.

Open settings, scroll down to “accounts & passwords”, then go to “fetch new data”. Select which account (if more than one) you want to change the fetch setting. Select either “fetch” or “manual”. The “manual” setting will only check for mail when the application is opened and in use. While the “fetch” setting will check for mail at anytime when Cellular data or WiFi is enabled, thus getting your mail faster.

Hope this helps!

Similar problem with both my iPhone 7+ and iPad.

Push email for my iCloud.com address had been working fine, but suddenly stopped working a few days ago - possibly after the latest iOS update.

It now acts as if Manual is selected - it only gets mail for the iCloud.com account when the Mail app is opened or a manual refresh is done. Otherwise, it never gets pending emails.

Other push accounts, such as Outlook.com, work fine.

My Mac also receives the iCloud.com mail in real-time.

Changing it to Fetch works as expected - and receives emails after 15 minutes or so.

Since Push for iCloud.com email stopped working on both my iPhone or iPad, I'm guessing it's not a device problem. Both were working fine. Both stopped working at the same time a few days ago without me changing any settings.

I've done the usual things: normal reboot, forced reboot, toggled the Push/Fetch/Manual settings, toggled the Mail setting for my iCloud account.

If it were as simple as that, we wouldn’t be complaining about it here. Toggling/changing settings IS NOT WORKING. The iOS update has definitively caused settings to not work on the phone, and it has disrupted how certain apps function as well.

At this point I am going to an Apple store tomorrow to have them remove the update and give me back the 10.3.

As it IS working on my iPhone 7 Plus and iPad Air 2 (both 11.0.2) I'm guessing that it is a device problem for you.

Have you tried deleting the iCloud account, restarting, and adding it back?

Now tried signing out, restarted and signed back into my iCloud account: didn't help.

Also tried installing the latest Public Beta 11.1 onto my iPad: didn't help.

Chatted with Apple Support. They say this is the first they've heard of the issue, so if anyone else is experiencing this I'd encourage you to contact Support.

Looking through my notes, this same exact problem happened to many of us a year ago too. Back then, there were threads on various forums where many users reported that iCloud email Push was working fine, then just stopped after one of the early iOS 10 versions. No client-side fix was ever found - it just started mysteriously working for everyone again after a week or two.

I have exactly the same problems. My old iphone 5 with deactivated sim and all apps closed pings instantly when email comes into my macbookpro. As it always did. My new very expensive iphone 6s - with all the correct settings as delineated above - does nothing until I manually open app. It is infuriating. Like walking around with a mobile that does not ring. After countless hours eating into my work day spent scouring forums I then spent three hours on the phone with Apple Support. This has them stumped too and they told me to go in and get a new phone at Apple Store. For pity's sake.

I have a solution to this (and for all applications, as everything has this behavior). All you need to do is start every application you have. When they launch, they will reregister for push notifications and things will start working. Doing this resolved all my push notification issues. One of the applications I use actually told me it "enabled push notifications" which I haven't seen since I first installed it earlier this year.
