iOS 11 Mail push notifications problem

Since upgrading to iOS 11 I only get Mail push notifications when in Mail or the Home screen. Otherwise all my queued up messages appear when I open Mail. I see the same behavior on my iPhone and iPad. Is this a known problem, and is there a workaround?

I have the same problem. I am using Gmail account with ios mail app. No push notifications!

That's because gmail does not support Push, except for the gmail app.

In general, Push requires that the email provider supports it. Google, Yahoo and Microsoft have decided that they will not support it for their free services, except when using their app instead of the iOS mail app.

Google and Microsoft will support Push on iOS mail for premium (paid) accounts. Microsoft will also support Push for Microsoft Exchange email accounts.

Open settings, scroll down to “accounts & passwords”, then go to “fetch new data”. Select which account (if more than one) you want to change the fetch setting. Select either “fetch” or “manual”. The “manual” setting will only check for mail when the application is opened and in use. While the “fetch” setting will check for mail at anytime when Cellular data or WiFi is enabled, thus getting your mail faster.

Hope this helps!

I have a solution to this (and for all applications, as everything has this behavior). All you need to do is start every application you have. When they launch, they will reregister for push notifications and things will start working. Doing this resolved all my push notification issues. One of the applications I use actually told me it "enabled push notifications" which I haven't seen since I first installed it earlier this year.

btinternet has never supported Push. You probably had it set up for Fetch, and you can do that again. Go to Settings/Mail and tap Notifications. Select the notifications you want. Then go to Settings/Accounts & Passwords, scroll to the bottom and tap Fetch New Data. Then tap the mail account name and choose a schedule. If Push is available it will be listed; if it isn't (I don't think it will be) then choose Fetch. Then back out by tapping the blue caret in the upper left, scroll down and select how frequently you would like it to check.

I hope I can, but I am just another user like you. If I had the problem (I don't with 11.2.6 and didn't with 11.2.5) I would restore iOS using iTunes. The first time I would restore my backup. If that didn't fix it I would restore again, and set it up as a new phone, and just add the Push email account. If it still doesn't work then it probably is an issue with the version or an incompatibility between the version and your phone. But I'm pretty sure one of these troubleshooting steps will fix it, as based on the small number of reports it doesn't appear to be a widespread issue.

I also have this issue since upgrading to iOS 11 (i'm currently on 11.0.2 on my iPhone 7+ and just experienced the issue). I run exchange and gmail accounts on my phone and sometimes neither update until i manually go into the mail app and refresh. Exchange is set to push and worked perfectly on iOS 10, while gmail is set to the new auto fetch. A hard reset of the phone fixes this issue, at least temporarily. still ***** to miss email when the issue reemerges.

In the interest of attempting to help everyone, not just you, I responded to Craftypolly, not you. As this is Craftypolly's first post ever in ASC, we have no way of knowing what kind of account the user is having a problem with.

To come now to your problem, it is not a known problem. I do not have a problem with Push iCloud email on my iPhone or iPod. What troubleshooting steps have you carried out so far?

  • Have you verified that Push is enabled for the iCloud account in Settings/Accounts & Passwords - Fetch New Data?
  • Have you verified that Cellular Data is enabled for Mail?
  • Have you tried deleting the iCloud account, restarting the phone, and adding it back?

Have used Icloud mail for years with push to Iphones (currently 6S plus on 11.1.1), no problems ever. Now no push feature. Emails push to laptop normally, but phone requires manual checking for email. After hours of support chat and finally escalated to engineers (we tried all fixes listed in this thread, even tried my account on two other phones with older IOS), they said that the recent upgrades do not allow push of email from Icloud accounts.

However, even my other accounts that are set for "automatic fetch" that don't support push (gmail, privateemail.com) do not show in inbox until a manual refresh.

I don't know any other things to try and am basically getting used to manually checking for emails. Pretty frustrating after years of normal use.

Any other suggestions (other than all of the settings changes, restore/set up as new phone, try mail on other phones)?

Your summary is 100% correct in my humble opinion. If you have the same email problems with iPhone X that many of us with us earlier models also have, then it can hardly be blamed on the “ slowing down / preserving battery life” issue. Clearly iOS 11 is the problem and nobody at Apple, to the best of my knowledge and also my experience when speaking to Apple Care staff, seem prepared to acknowledge it. Disappointing is putting it mildly since I would venture the opinion that, with the possible exceptions of Safari & Message, Mail is the most used App by iPhone / iPad users. For many, our livelihoods depend on responding quickly to emails which is no longer happening with Apple hence why I switched to Edison Mail.
