iOS 11 Mail push notifications problem

Since upgrading to iOS 11 I only get Mail push notifications when in Mail or the Home screen. Otherwise all my queued up messages appear when I open Mail. I see the same behavior on my iPhone and iPad. Is this a known problem, and is there a workaround?

I have the same problem. I am using Gmail account with ios mail app. No push notifications!

That's because gmail does not support Push, except for the gmail app.

In general, Push requires that the email provider supports it. Google, Yahoo and Microsoft have decided that they will not support it for their free services, except when using their app instead of the iOS mail app.

Google and Microsoft will support Push on iOS mail for premium (paid) accounts. Microsoft will also support Push for Microsoft Exchange email accounts.

Now tried signing out, restarted and signed back into my iCloud account: didn't help.

Also tried installing the latest Public Beta 11.1 onto my iPad: didn't help.

Chatted with Apple Support. They say this is the first they've heard of the issue, so if anyone else is experiencing this I'd encourage you to contact Support.

Looking through my notes, this same exact problem happened to many of us a year ago too. Back then, there were threads on various forums where many users reported that iCloud email Push was working fine, then just stopped after one of the early iOS 10 versions. No client-side fix was ever found - it just started mysteriously working for everyone again after a week or two.

I have been experiencing this issue on all my iOS devices that were upgraded to iOS 11.0x! Whenever I activate the lockscreen, the devices lose connection to the WiFi network after about 30 seconds. This means that if the device has no connection to a mobile network, it will not receive mails, push notifications or messages like WhatsApp. I also have an old iPhone 5S running iOS 10.3.3, as well as a first generation iPad running iOS 5.1.1 - both of these devices remain connected to the WiFi even if the device is in sleep mode. I‘m quite sure the WiFi disconnects are caused by iOS 11. I‘ve tried every method described in this and other forums, but the issue remains. Push notifications are just forwarded if your iOS 11 device has an active connection to a mobile network (Edge, 3G, 4G). I‘m quite surprised that Apple hasn‘t come up with a fix for this yet.

Since iOS 11, Apple has disabled scheduled fetch and notifications for favorited folders and sub folders for non-push mail accounts in the native mail app of iOS.

This fetch used to happen in iOS 10.3.3 without any problem.

Apple is also saying this problem is not widespread and only a few users are troubled by it hence will resolve it later.

Since iOS 11, Apple has disabled scheduled fetch and notifications for favorited folders and sub folders for non-push IMAP mail accounts in the native mail app of iOS. This problem is for folders other than Inbox where the scheduled fetch does not work for folders other than Inbox. The problem occurs only on accounts not supporting Push.

This fetch for Inbox as well as favorited folders used to happen in iOS 10.3.3 without any problem.

Unfortunately, as MANY very annoyed people continue to point out is that fetch is not working properly either and is on fetching when the app is running. For me, not only must the app be open, but The ipad must be awake. so if the ipad/iphone is asleep, generally i wont get mail. but sometimes.... not reliably and not every 15 minutes as it is set to do.

something unrelated or possibley related, i am also having a problem when all of my mail disappears, and has to re downloaded. Ill be in the midst of reading an email, and it will disappear in front of my eyes. i will then have to wait as 10,000 emails re-load. first the headers, then the messages. a slow process. this is happening a lot now, sometimes more than once a day, sometimes once a week. but it only started after the introduction of ios 11

It seems that Apple has marked this issue as a low priority or simply couldn't care. From September ( iOS 11 intro ) until today is one third of a year ! Like many on this forum, I have wasted hours doing reboots, reinstalling from Backup and speaking to Apple Care. What is staggering is that Apple do not even acknowledge there is a problem.

Best solution is to drag your Apple Mail App from the dock onto the main screen and replace it with Edison Mail App. Keep the two running in tandem until you are satisfied that the Edison Mail App is how the Apple Mail app should be - quick, clear and simple to use. Then ditch Apple Mail until such time as Apple start to pull their finger out and solve this problem.

Also having this problem. Prior to iOS 11, phone received push mail in Gmail app and fetched mail in Mail app not long after. I have been running a Gmail account through iOS Mail as well as Gmail app with same account. I run the Gmail app for push benefit because of my job. It always worked. Always same results on WIFI or cellular data, locked phone or open. After the update, Gmail app no longer retrieving mail unless I am IN the app. iOS Mail app fetching mail without a pattern. One will show up immediately if in the app, within ten seconds if app is in background, but five emails will take an hour if the app is closed and the phone is locked. No locked screen notices AT ALL despite that setting checked in notifications. I wake up in the morning to no email alerts at all, but then I enter the app and find seven waiting for me from hours before. The phone is not behaving according to the settings.

As for the phone overriding the ability of the Gmail app to even function at all, I don’t know if that is a Gmail software bug or an iOS 11 ****** move. But this is deeply aggravating and hurting my actual livelihood. I tried all kinds of settings changes and toggling. Powering off. Restarting. Removing accounts and apps and reloading them. Nothing. Went for the ultimate Hail Mary and factory reset. Guess what? iOS 11 is still on the phone despite the factory reset. So I lost everything on my phone except the terrible new buggy software. Beware.

I noticed that iOS 11.1 seems to connect to the WiFi every 5 - 10 minutes when the device is locked. This means that if you have no mobile network and only WiFi, push notifications and instant messages will have a delay of max. 10 minutes. Not really acceptable but a slight improvement to not connecting at all, when locked.
