iOS 11 Mail push notifications problem

Since upgrading to iOS 11 I only get Mail push notifications when in Mail or the Home screen. Otherwise all my queued up messages appear when I open Mail. I see the same behavior on my iPhone and iPad. Is this a known problem, and is there a workaround?

I have the same problem. I am using Gmail account with ios mail app. No push notifications!

That's because gmail does not support Push, except for the gmail app.

In general, Push requires that the email provider supports it. Google, Yahoo and Microsoft have decided that they will not support it for their free services, except when using their app instead of the iOS mail app.

Google and Microsoft will support Push on iOS mail for premium (paid) accounts. Microsoft will also support Push for Microsoft Exchange email accounts.

Also having this problem. Prior to iOS 11, phone received push mail in Gmail app and fetched mail in Mail app not long after. I have been running a Gmail account through iOS Mail as well as Gmail app with same account. I run the Gmail app for push benefit because of my job. It always worked. Always same results on WIFI or cellular data, locked phone or open. After the update, Gmail app no longer retrieving mail unless I am IN the app. iOS Mail app fetching mail without a pattern. One will show up immediately if in the app, within ten seconds if app is in background, but five emails will take an hour if the app is closed and the phone is locked. No locked screen notices AT ALL despite that setting checked in notifications. I wake up in the morning to no email alerts at all, but then I enter the app and find seven waiting for me from hours before. The phone is not behaving according to the settings.

As for the phone overriding the ability of the Gmail app to even function at all, I don’t know if that is a Gmail software bug or an iOS 11 ****** move. But this is deeply aggravating and hurting my actual livelihood. I tried all kinds of settings changes and toggling. Powering off. Restarting. Removing accounts and apps and reloading them. Nothing. Went for the ultimate Hail Mary and factory reset. Guess what? iOS 11 is still on the phone despite the factory reset. So I lost everything on my phone except the terrible new buggy software. Beware.

I noticed that iOS 11.1 seems to connect to the WiFi every 5 - 10 minutes when the device is locked. This means that if you have no mobile network and only WiFi, push notifications and instant messages will have a delay of max. 10 minutes. Not really acceptable but a slight improvement to not connecting at all, when locked.

Ever since I upgraded to IOS 11 on my iPhone 6S, my email stopped fetching when the phone is locked or the ios mail app is running in the background. Checked all the settings for push, fetch, automatically. Apple does not seem to be aware of this problem after on the phone with them for about 2 hours. I received my iPhone X this week and same issue with the email not coming through. The only way to get it is to open the ios mail app and then all the messages load at once, even ones from hours ago. This is very frustration that a basic feature for a smartphone is not working.

i am having the same problem with my Yahoo mail on both my ipad air 2 and on my iphone 7. i just spent over 2 hours on a chat with apple support, only to tell me that i should contact yahoo, apple claiming zero responsibility. Now i find this forum and see that this push issue is widespread, well documented, and affects many mail servers INCLUDING apples own, icloud. Obviously Apple did something in the development of ios 11 and support claims to know nothing about it. Sorry, but this is really frustrating. I get over 200 emails a day and mail is only downloading when i manually fetch it. sometimes taking 15 mins to actually display my emails, and requiring me to stay in the mail app. I dont think we’ll see any fix until apple admits there is an issue and updates the software to address it. Is there any way to downgrade back to ios 10? i dont think there is one new feature that is worth losing my mail functionality for.

In addition to what Lawrence Finch summarized, most of us here have posted the issue that Fetch is not working correctly either. Even when fetch is set to retrieve mail, it is not doing so in the background. For me, it is only fetching when the mail app is running AND active! Sometimes it will fetch when i am currently using another app, but generally I am being force to manually retrieve mail. Rarely has it fetched new mail when the ipad/iphone is closed and asleep.

I just updated to 11.2.6 yesterday, so hopefully there will be some improvement.

Thanks for all your replies. Background refresh is set to WiFi & cellular. Mail is not on the list of apps to enable for background refresh. Mail should in fact show notifications and update the icon badge before I launch the app, and it doesn't. It works once in a while but most of the time not.

Erasing the phone and not restoring from a backup is absurd. I have a lot of stuff on there and a life to live.
