iOS 11 Mail push notifications problem

Since upgrading to iOS 11 I only get Mail push notifications when in Mail or the Home screen. Otherwise all my queued up messages appear when I open Mail. I see the same behavior on my iPhone and iPad. Is this a known problem, and is there a workaround?

iPhone 7, iOS 11

I have the same problem. I am using Gmail account with ios mail app. No push notifications!

That's because gmail does not support Push, except for the gmail app.

In general, Push requires that the email provider supports it. Google, Yahoo and Microsoft have decided that they will not support it for their free services, except when using their app instead of the iOS mail app.

Google and Microsoft will support Push on iOS mail for premium (paid) accounts. Microsoft will also support Push for Microsoft Exchange email accounts.

The Automatic option on Fetch doesn't appear to actually ever make an attempt to connect to the email servers when my phone is asleep. It doesn't check for any email until I launch the Mail app itself.

Using Gmail's official app notifications come through nearly instantaneous with when I send the email - precisely as it should.

Apple's Automatic Fetch "solution" is seemingly DOA.

Doing a test now with a Fetch set for every 15 minutes to see if that works and if notifications appear…

Nope - that didn't check for email either.

I have exactly the same. I ask my wife to send me an email (I use Gmail), I receive it immediately on my PC. I never receive it on my iPhone (6 Plus), unless I open Mail. I recently opened Mail, to find 22 queued up emails appear! Also, I have the same with my iPhone Calendar (linked with Google Calendar). It always used to sync perfectly, now it does not, unless I open Calendar on my iPhone. I can ask Alexa (Echo Dot) to make an appointment, and it appears on Google Calendar on my PC almost immediately, but no longer shows up on my Apple Watch "up next" like it used to. If I then open the Calendar app on my iPhone, it immediately shows up on my watch.

So:

  • Your phone is on the latest version: 11.1.2.
  • You went to Settings/Accounts & Passwords, tapped on Fetch New Data, verified that Push was ON at the top.
    • You then tapped on your iCloud account on that screen and verified that Push was checked, along with the mailboxes you wanted pushed.
    • If that didn't fix it, you turned OFF Push at the top of the listing, then turned it back on
    • If that didn't fix it, you went on to the additional steps below
  • You deleted the iCloud account, restarted your phone, and added the account back, and that didn't fix it.
  • You backed up to iTunes, then restored iOS using iTunes and restored your backup, and that did not resolve it.
  • You contacted Apple Support using the link at the top of this page and opened a case with Support. How is that going?

I can't speak for bayfanva, but in my case (push notifications for iCloud email with IMAP on iPhone) it does not work with iOS 11. It does work on the Mac (10.12 and 10.13) and, oddly, also works pretty well on the iPad with iOS 11. My best guess about the discrepancy is that those devices may keep the network connection open more and get notified about new mail that way. Along those lines I also find that the iPhone will get push notifications for a little while after I use Mail, but then it stops.

it looks like 1623 reponded that they have the same problem i have. To me, that looks like a pattern. And most of them are using mail servers other than Yahoo, with the same issue. That may be a small number in the scope of all ipone/ipad users but i would suspect that most people having push issues since ‘downgrading‘ to ios11 have not stumbled across this forum.

I find it appalling that so many people are denying the plausibility of this being an iOS issue. I've had an iPhone since the iPhone 3G, and I've had my Gmail Accounts on every iPhone since using the native mail application. I now have the iPhone X. AFTER INSTALLING iOS 11.2, "FETCH" IS NO LONGER WORKING at any time interval - never had an issue with this before, the only thing that has changed is the version of iOS (Fetch functionality worked for all of my accounts prior to iOS 11.2 - I was quite sad when Google got rid of "Push" functionality). Now each time I open the Mail app, it says "Last updated at 3:47am" or something to this effect (just an FYI that was not me checking it at that time, so I'm not sure how it can fetch then but no other times). Sure enough, after a few seconds of being in the mail app, all my emails from 3:47am and onward come flooding in.

I feel like the majority of people on this forum are having a similar issue, and just not explaining it properly. When is Apple going to acknowledge and address this? Someone put me in my place if I'm wrong!!

I just started having this issue after I enabled low power mode for the first time on my iphone X. Low power mode disables push notifications for things like mail, and does other things. After a full charge, low power mode is automatically turned off, but ever since then my mail has not been getting pushed to the app. Really really annoying. Like another user, I've just been using manual update.

We are having the same problem. It's sporadic in nature, but affects a large population of our users. We are running Exchange 2010 and 2013. It doesn't happen all the time, but does happen enough times to cause concern. We are a law firm and relay heavily on email notifications. Essentially the email doesn't appear on the phone unless you open the mail app. Even when you open the mail app, sometimes you are forced to refresh to see the new mail. If you have users set up as VIP's and the phone is locked, the notification never comes through, or comes through after a length of time. This has been a real heartache for us because we are being pressured to find a solution to a problem that doesn't have one (it seems). It's sounding more and more like a problem with the IOS, but can't seem to prove that.

I think I know why. This is a battery savings thing for Apple. If you notice, the only account that gets the priority push now is, iCloud. By forcing you to a 3rd party application for instant emails, they dont have to support you, its not their fault or an issue with the battery.

Thats my thoughts, since all of this pretty much just started to happen on my wifes phone. I have a friend who bought 2 new eights when they came out, even returned one and never got all of this resolved. Just turned off his email alert because his alerts that there is a new mail, but nothing appears until several minutes after the alert.

My guess, this is yet another hidden fix like the battery slow down!

My wife had to go to a 3rd party application to resolve this. Some are saying its because ISP are no longer pushing emails. Yet I don't see this on my older non android blackberry.

That's because on a Blackberry ALL mail goes through the Blackberry servers, and none comes directly from the ISP. The Blackberry server polls the ISP, receives your mail, then pushes it to your device. That's the good feature of Blackberry. The bad side of it is ALL mail goes through Blackberry servers, and thus is not private. The provider of the Blackberry server (your company, for example) has access to all of your incoming and outgoing mail.
