iOS 11 Mail push notifications problem

Since upgrading to iOS 11 I only get Mail push notifications when in Mail or the Home screen. Otherwise all my queued up messages appear when I open Mail. I see the same behavior on my iPhone and iPad. Is this a known problem, and is there a workaround?

I have the same problem. I am using Gmail account with ios mail app. No push notifications!

That's because gmail does not support Push, except for the gmail app.

In general, Push requires that the email provider supports it. Google, Yahoo and Microsoft have decided that they will not support it for their free services, except when using their app instead of the iOS mail app.

Google and Microsoft will support Push on iOS mail for premium (paid) accounts. Microsoft will also support Push for Microsoft Exchange email accounts.

Anyway, back to my original post, which is not related to Exchange or GMail. I find it weird and frustrating that I get Mail push notifications fine on my Mac, and even on my iPad which is running the same version of iOS and as far as I can tell is configured the same. Sometimes when I fiddle with the settings on the iPhone (most recently setting Fetch New Data from Automatically to Every 15 Minutes), I get the push notifications for a while but then they stop after a while.

A few days ago I tried doing an iTunes backup and restore which wasted an entire evening of my life and didn't help the problem.

Similar problem with both my iPhone 7+ and iPad.

Push email for my iCloud.com address had been working fine, but suddenly stopped working a few days ago - possibly after the latest iOS update.

It now acts as if Manual is selected - it only gets mail for the iCloud.com account when the Mail app is opened or a manual refresh is done. Otherwise, it never gets pending emails.

Other push accounts, such as Outlook.com, work fine.

My Mac also receives the iCloud.com mail in real-time.

Changing it to Fetch works as expected - and receives emails after 15 minutes or so.

Since Push for iCloud.com email stopped working on both my iPhone or iPad, I'm guessing it's not a device problem. Both were working fine. Both stopped working at the same time a few days ago without me changing any settings.

I've done the usual things: normal reboot, forced reboot, toggled the Push/Fetch/Manual settings, toggled the Mail setting for my iCloud account.

In the hope of keeping this thread on track, I want to reiterate that I am referring to using IMAP with my iCloud account on an iPhone. This supports push notifications and is described in this article:

Mail server settings for iCloud email clients - Apple Support

This configuration allows push notifications on my Mac and iPad but doesn't work reliably on my iPhone since upgrading to iOS 11.
