iOS 11 Mail push notifications problem

Since upgrading to iOS 11 I only get Mail push notifications when in Mail or the Home screen. Otherwise all my queued up messages appear when I open Mail. I see the same behavior on my iPhone and iPad. Is this a known problem, and is there a workaround?

I have the same problem. I am using Gmail account with ios mail app. No push notifications!

That's because gmail does not support Push, except for the gmail app.

In general, Push requires that the email provider supports it. Google, Yahoo and Microsoft have decided that they will not support it for their free services, except when using their app instead of the iOS mail app.

Google and Microsoft will support Push on iOS mail for premium (paid) accounts. Microsoft will also support Push for Microsoft Exchange email accounts.

I truly can't figure out the issue, nor could the experts at Apple. They concluded it was related to the Icloud email change in the latest upgrade which doesn't allow push feature on iphone (at least for alias email addresses, though affects all three of mine plus the non icloud accounts).

All I know is that it worked for years fine, and now doesn't work which is seemingly unrelated to the update on my end. I have tried everything and am beyond frustrated. Hoping somehow it is just a bug and gets fixed on future updates.

That’s exactly what I had to do, I get sound and banner alerts now. Apple need to sort out iOS 11 out as loads of other things no longer work. For example, passwords are not remembered anymore so when regular websites are visited, The ID and password have to be manually entered every time. I also have to keep rebooting my iPad as it freezes so often. Not a happy bunny with new iOS. I think Apple should introduce a way of going back to iOS 10 until they have sorted out all the glitches in iOS 11.

i have a wifi only ipad and never had this problem before the update and ipad is plugged in all night, so wifi shoukdnt be dropped. Also, i was just working on another app for an hour, went to check mail and an hours wotprth of email dowloaded, not on it’s 15 minute schedule as selected. it just isn't working anymore. same with the mail deleting issue. only started after OS 11. absolutely a fail for apple. i never thought i would consider another platform, but when it’s time to upgrade ill have to look around. It saddens me that after 20+ years of loyalty apple has really let us down. No way can i justify paying $1000 for a phone that doesnt reliably fetch my email.

I have the same problem that my E-Mails in the subfolders (which also appear in the main view) are not being fetched /updated in the background so I don't get notifications for my E-Mails in the subfolders (iOS 11.2.1). To see whether I got an E-mail to my subfolder I have to go to the E-Mail APP and have to update it manually. Really Apple?! What is my iPhone? A working device or a device for 3D Emojis?! There are some crucial Mails in my Subfolders and if I don't get notified about them on my notification view, the iPhone is nothing but a toy for me! I'm so **** off!!!

Hi Lawrence,

Thanks for your prompt response.

I have checked with my company's IT team and we do support push (we are usually internal email server called as Beehive developed by Oracle).

Assuming that we don't support push, I tried switching off the push and switch on Fetch Automatically. Even that didn't work and couldn't any new mails until I open the app. Then I tried Fetch - Every 15 mins and even that didn't work.

To add to that, this was perfectly working before the upgrade of ios to 11.2.5.

I hope you can help me resolve this issue.

I connected my iphone to my laptop after installing itunes. I saw the icon u highlighted. but once I clicked on it, this screen appeared.

User uploaded file

when I explored further, I could find back now option under File --> Devices --> Back up.

User uploaded file

When I clicked on it, it starts the back up but no encryption key or passcode was asked.

I have completed the backup without encryption now.

Do you suggest restoring the back up now or any other steps needs to be completed before that?

If you don't encrypt the backup then health app data and passwords will not be included in the backup. Other than that everything will be included. Now that you have done the initial backup try following my instructions and do another backup. If you still can't encrypt the backup it may be a government requirement that backups not be encrypted.

You can still do an iCloud backup from the phone to include the missing information.
