iOS 11 Mail push notifications problem

Since upgrading to iOS 11 I only get Mail push notifications when in Mail or the Home screen. Otherwise all my queued up messages appear when I open Mail. I see the same behavior on my iPhone and iPad. Is this a known problem, and is there a workaround?

That's because gmail does not support Push, except for the gmail app.

In general, Push requires that the email provider supports it. Google, Yahoo and Microsoft have decided that they will not support it for their free services, except when using their app instead of the iOS mail app.

Google and Microsoft will support Push on iOS mail for premium (paid) accounts. Microsoft will also support Push for Microsoft Exchange email accounts.

To summarize what has already been posted many times in this thread:

Push

Push email - that is, email that appears on the phone as soon as it reaches the server - requires the email provider to send push notifications. Currently, Apple's iCloud email and Microsoft Exchange are the only email providers that support Push. Google used to, and Yahoo used to, but neither of them support Push with Apple's email app anymore. You must use the gmail and yahoo app, respectively, to receive Push email from gmail or yahoo

Fetch

If your provider does not support Push you can set up Fetch on the account. It will check for email periodically; you set how frequently you want it to check.

Manual

Email will only appear when you open the mail app.

You must set which you want to use in the phone's Settings for each account.

Hi Everyone, I have an iphone X with 11.2.6. I had been receiving mail notifications for my AOL & Gmail emails on my lock screen (which is what I want) when I first got the phone, then they stopped showing up. After HOURS spent trying to figure out the problem on my own + talking to Apple support + Genius Bar, I finally figured out from this thread that the problem might be the latest OS. Why no one I spoke to at Apple even theorized that is beyond me, but when I brought it up with my most recent Apple support person, she confirmed that the OS is the problem (beginning with 11.1.1). She said the issue only just recently was officially noted in Apple's system as a bug, and that it should be addressed within the next two updates. She also said that some users have reported that turning OFF the mail notification setting for "Show in history" has proven to be a workaround for some people (it didn't work for me). Hope this is helpful. For now, my workaround is to download the Gmail and AOL apps, which DO post notifications on the lock screen. (Note I have all of my mail/fetch/push/notifications settings set correctly, as far as I and everyone at Apple can tell. We also tried reloading my whole OS, NOT including the back-up. Nothing worked.).

Is cellular data on for the mail app?

Is the Fetch New Data set to Push? Go to Settings --> Accounts --> Fetch New Data. There set all your email accounts to Push (if Push isn't available set it to Fetch). Then go back to the Fetch New Data screen and set that to Automatically (I'm not sure how often that checks for emails, so you might not get a notification for awhile after the email was sent to you.)

If that doesn't fix it try to restore your iPhone using a Mac or PC and iTunes. Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support. This will hopefully reset any setting that might be interfering/corrupted data. Also, don't restore from a backup because that will bring the problem back (but do back it up just in case you want to access something in the future).

Even using " Fetch" instead of *Push*, I was experiencing the same problems, highlighted by beserkgirl and many others on this forum, with my Sky ( Yahoo ) email following the introduction of iOS 11. When iOS 11.2 was introduced, I deleted and then reinstalled the email account. The fetch cycle was set to every 15 minutes as before. Since then it has been fine so hopefully Apple has now resolved this. As I previously mentioned, iOS 11 has not been one of Apple's finest moments.

Took delivery of a new iPad last week, "upgraded" to IOS11.2 on the day of purchase and , yes, the Push feature is also not functioning. All I could do was to open the Mail app and manually refresh. I have tried all the proposed solutions put forward on this forum but to no avail.

The only work around, which I found is :

1. Settings > Accounts & Passwords > Fetch New Data. Disable "Push". Then switch every email account, including iCloud, to "Fetch". Finally, I switched the "Fetch" setting to every 15 minutes.

2. Settings > Mail> Notifications > Enable " Allow Notifications"> Email Account > Alerts > Enable "Show on Lock Screen" > Enable "Show as Banners".

I now receive new emails automatically every 15 minutes via temporary banner alerts on the iPad, which is a vast improvement on manually retrieving emails. It's still not "Push" but I can live with this until Apple finds a solution.

IOS 11 has not been one of their finest moments.

I also had this problem, tried everything, push, fetch, clearing network settings et cetera with no joy although it did work on the odd occasion, iPhone 8, IOS 11.3 beta (15E5189f).

I wanted to get rid of the Gmail app (I have 2 Gmail accounts) and all seemed good with Mail until this issue with notifications.

I installed Edison Mail and now everything works as it should. I don't see how it isn't an issue with the Mail app as the push notifications work fine with Edison as do all my iPhone notifications, badges et cetera.

So, either Gmail are specifically blocking Apple Mail or there is an issue with the Mail app.

Interesting, but wrong guess. Push notifications require TWO parties to make it work. A device that can RECEIVE notifications (in this case, an iOS device) and a service provider that SENDS notifications. if the email provider does not send email notifications the fact that your phone can receive them is irrelevant; you aren't going to get any. Gmail and Yahoo stopped sending Push notifications to accounts using Apple mail. They only send Push notifications to their own respective apps.

Lets check your notification settings (heads up you will need to follow this for each account that is in the iOS mail app that you want to have the notifications appear on your lock screen). First go to Settings --> Mail --> Notifications --> here is where you will select the account(s) that you want to enable the feature (you have to do it one account at a time), after selecting the account toggle on Show on Lock Screen to show your emails on the Lock Screen, you can also enable Show in History so when you are on the Lock Screen and swipe up it will retain your emails there until you open the mail app.
