iOS 11 - Podcasts won't play over bluetooth

iPhone 7, after upgrading to iOS 11, the podcasts app will no longer play over bluetooth car audio. Plays music just fine, but if you switch over to Podcasts app and press play, you'll hear the podcast audio for about half a second and then it goes quiet. iPhone reports it is still sending the audio, and the podcast timer ticks up as if it's playing, but no audio after that.

I even tried playing a podcast over iPhone speakers before starting the car. In the past, the podcast audio would start playing over the car speakers as soon as it connected. Now, it automatically switches to the Music app and continues the last song you were listening to.

When my phone connects to my car's bluetooth, it immediately starts playing a random song, regardless if the podcasts app is open-- even if it's playing!

If I start a podcast, it will play, but the car audio is muted. if I turn up the volume, the podcast will play for a split second and it will flip back to music. The only way I can get the podcast to play is if I open the music app and terminate it while it is playing. The audio goes quiet, and then if I go back to the podcast and play, it will work.

No info will show on the display, but at least it works.

You have to double-tap home and kill music while it's open and playing. There is no other way to make it work in my experience. Pausing music doesn't matter... they screwed something up so that music will always override anything else over BT.

Also, the new podcast app is horrible.

I have experienced many infuriating permutations iOS these problems, throughout iOS 8-11, iPhones 6-X, and various brands of automobile entertainment systems.

Music plays automatically when Bluetooth audio is selected, even though I NEVER play music from my phone to the car. The music which plays is the first alphabetic selection from the available songs. Podcasts never resume automatically, unless it has only been a short time since the previous playback session. Occasionally, a podcast starts and plays for a few seconds, and then a music selection spontaneously begins to play instead.

In iOS 11 on iPhone X, a new problem symptom: (this usually while Waze is currently navigating to a destination) after letting the phone start playing the first available (alphabetic) song, I launch the Apple Podcasts app and select the podcast I wish to hear (no thanks to Apple, as there is no predictable way to effectively play podcasts in order of release, unplayed episodes only) - but the podcast audio is emitted from the iPhone’s internal speaker (probably related to the selection is Waze to output it’s audio to the speaker, otherwise it’s almost impossible to hear Waze unless there is also audio content playing on the car sound system).

And why would everyone always want to hear the first alphabetic song in their collection when they turn on their car?

I accidentally discovered a solution to the podcast audio mis-routing: swiping down the iOS Control Center immediately and consistently results in the audio switching to Bluetooth (assuming BT audio is already selection the car’s audio system) from internal iPhone speakers.

Because these problems have persisted for years through so many OS, Podcasts app and iPhone hardware versions, and because I’ve experienced similarly horrible results on vastly differing brands of car hardware, it’s apparent that no one really gives a crap about any of this actually working. It’s all shameful.

Update:

I found the same issue trying to play audio from any other app (Amazon Music, Pandora).

I found that if you manually kill the Music app, it will then allow you to play audio from the other apps. However, if you turn off the car, the next time you start it back up and the phone reconnects to Bluetooth, the Music app automatically relaunches itself and plays a completely random track from your library.

Hello iwillneverusethis,

Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities about Podcasts and your car stereo. Here are some things to try.

Since the Music app is working properly, I recommend force quitting the Podcast app: Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Then, restart the device: Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Thanks again and have a great rest of your day.

Since iOS 11, music app will start playing no matter what. In iOS 10.3.3 the phone would remember if spotify, pandora, audible, etc were playing and pick up where you left off. That is no longer the case and while your instructions above fix it for that time, the next time the bluetooth connection starts, music app will start playing.

Apple Customer care, are you out there? Going to provide an update on this issue?

My phone is properly paired through bluetooth connection to my car. I'm able to talk on the phone hands free while driving 90% of the time. There is a glitch sometimes and it won't play over hands free in car even though I'm paired.

The MAJOR issue I'm having is that I can not play audio through any of my 3rd party apps through the car speakers. Pandora, Sirius XM, Stitcher, Netflix, etc... The list goes on and on.

I have found a funky work around that works 40% of the time. When I am using WAZE, if I turn on music from a 3rd party app, then go back to WAZE, the music will all of a sudden start playing through the car audio. It's the oddest thing.

When paying $1,000 for a phone, you would expect music to play in your car over Bluetooth. This is ridiculous and unacceptable. I can't believe APPLE hasn't come out with a fix yet.

I am having the same issue in both cars on my iPhone 7 Plus. One is a Mazda and the other is a Volvo. Although, it happens with Apple Music as well as the third party apps. It's been like this for months. I too noticed that WAZE usually works. However, for me it only works if WAZE is about to tell me something. Sometimes if I'm feeling patient, the music will kick over to the Bluetooth after a few minutes. When the music does come on over Bluetooth in my car, I noticed I can't change tracks; only the volume. Also, the info like artist and album name don't usually appear on my car's audio system. I thought I was the only one that had this issue until I found this in the forums. It's highly frustrating and honestly I've been thinking about moving to an Android as the last resort. Apple needs to fix this ASAP.

I just got an iPhone X, in part so I could listen to podcasts through my bluetooth-connected hearing aids. The connection works fine with phone calls. When I tried a podcast the phone ignored the bluetooth connection and played the podcast over the phone speaker, even though it showed the bluetooth/hearing aid link as active.

This has been going on for 4 months with users? I updated OS 11 to 11.2.1, the latest update. And it's not yet fixed??? This doesn't speak well for Apple Customer Support.
