iOS 11 - Podcasts won't play over bluetooth

iPhone 7, after upgrading to iOS 11, the podcasts app will no longer play over bluetooth car audio. Plays music just fine, but if you switch over to Podcasts app and press play, you'll hear the podcast audio for about half a second and then it goes quiet. iPhone reports it is still sending the audio, and the podcast timer ticks up as if it's playing, but no audio after that.

I even tried playing a podcast over iPhone speakers before starting the car. In the past, the podcast audio would start playing over the car speakers as soon as it connected. Now, it automatically switches to the Music app and continues the last song you were listening to.
