Photos app on iPhone not syncing in iOS 11

I upgraded my iPhone7, iPad AIr and iPad Pro to iOS 11.

The iPad Air had stopped syncing Photos properly, reboots did not correct it, turning off ICloud Photo Library and Upload to My PhotoStream, rebooting and then turning them back on did not work. I finally logged out of my iCloud account and back in, and it seems to be resolved on that device a few days back.

But now the iPhone 7 is doing the same thing. I repeated these steps of turning off ICloud Photo Library and Upload to My PhotoStream, rebooting and then turning them back on, and I did get the Photo to sync partially, but it stopped at 38,880 (photos and videos), whereas the Mac on Sierra, and the two iPads all show 57.755 (photos and videos).

I've made sure that I'm on wifi (I did have it set to allow cellular too).

With the Photos app open and the phone on the charger, I can see periodically that something is working briefly (the swirl next to the wifi signal) but the photos count is stagnant at 38,880.

I've also tried resetting the Network Settings.

I guess my next step is to log out of my iCloud account on the iPhone entirely, reboot and log in again.

Anyone else with this issue find another less painful fix?

I see that this thread has been going on for some time and I am reticent to offer such a simple solution, but it worked for me.

You mentioned turning off both “iCloud Photo Library” and “Upload to my Photo Stream”. I assume that means that you previously had both settings on. So did I. When I switched off “Upload to my Photo Stream” on all my devices, this problem was resolved within a day (it takes time for all of the missing photos to upload or download, so the problem is not fixed immediately).

It appears, from my research, that there is no need to have both settings on. If you have iCloud Photo Library, you don‘t need “upload to my Photostream”. The iCloud Photo Library, if activated on all devices logged into the same iCloud account, already uploads all. The photostream is a short term syncing solution for those who do not want to pay for the storage for iCloud Photo Library.

So, once I turned Photo Stream off, and iCloud Photo Library on, on all my devices. It fixed the problem for me.

I said I was reticent to post, because I am not sure this will work for all, and because it seems silly that, if that is the problem, Apple would not warn people or, even better, make it impossible not to select both options at the same time.

So, for what it is worth, here are my current iPad Pro settings for Photos:

I have a similar issue, my ipad doesn’t sync any picture on my iCloud library except when I plug it to the charger. It started happening after I downloaded iOS 11. When I plug it everything is syncing right away but otherwise it will never work. I tried absolutely everything rebooting with iCloud backup, rebooting as a new ipad with factory settings, sign out iCloud and in again, desactivate photo library and reactivate, my iPad is always 100% charged and on the same WiFi as my other devices. I called apple and so far no one is able to fix my issue or understand why this is going on 😟. So for now if I want my picture syncing I will have to have my iPad plugged in.

Same here, unfortnately. Now on 11.0.2 since yesterday - iPad Air 2 startet „uploading photos“, e.g. syncing with photo library, but now stuck with >2000 photos remaining. The newest ones (about the last 2 week) didn‘t ever pop up there, however they are on my iPhone and in the cloud.

Will do a full wipe in the evening and see if the issue persists when starting from scratch on the iPad. Pretty frustrating.

I have upgraded to 11.0.2 on my iPad 3 and also done a full wipe and now am faced with rebuilding the device. Nevertheless, I am no longer able to transfer my photo collection from my MacBook Pro directly to the iPad through the iTunes sync function. I have over 15,000 images, and use the iPad primarily for photo display. I get the following error message: "The iPad "____'s iPad" cannot be synced. An internal device error has occurred."

I hve been able to transfer about 7800 of 15000 images (all jpeg; not trying to transfer RAW files at this time), and there does not seem to be any consistent reason for one folder to sync rather than another.

Renders this iPad useless except for email and viewing iTunes content.

BTW: for me the problem occurred first when moving to iOS 11 public beta (I started with iOS 11 beta 2). Interestingly, I have no issues at all on a new iPad Pro 10.5 that I upgraded to the iOS 11 release candidate around mid-September 2017 (i.e., straight from 10.3.3 as delivered to the iOS release candidate).

Yeah I have the same issue. It’s constantly restoring and uses my battery in a second. I’ve tried turning off iCloud photos and photo stream, I’ve tried hard resetting the phone, I’ve tried restoring the phone and then restoring a backup. I have no idea why this is happening. Here is my reddit post on this topic https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/752tnu/why_does_the_ios_11_photos_app_us e_so_much_battery/?st=J8L5YT5U&sh=625a6195 https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/752tnu/why_does_the_ios_11_photos_app_us e_so_much_battery/?st=J8L5YT5U&sh=625a6195 and I hope there’s a fix soon

Same problem with me. After update to 11.0.2 foto synch stopps by itself after approximately 1500 fotos (out of 9000).

Still waiting for a solution by apple support. As everything worked perfectly under 10.3.3 this problem must have its origin in the IOS update. Visited today our local Apple store and had to face the fact that nobody was aware of this problem and certainly could not offer any help. I hope that Apple realises that they have to fix this pronto and without any more glitches.

I, too, have been surprised that we have heard nothing from Apple, as I assume all of us are statistics -- people with large, private photo collections which we have transferred to our iOS devices in the past using iTunes and not the Photos app. I have relied on the iPad Mini 3 (and three previous versions) to display these pictures (17,000+; I am an experienced amateur photographer) for years, and now can't get them on the iPad any more. I also had the same problem with my iPhone 6s once updated with the new iOS and new iTunes. Just so Apple understands the consequences (I am only one person, but I expect many have this issue), I gave my 6s to my son and have purchased a Galaxy Note 8, where transferring pictures to the 256GB internal card is as easy as 1-2-3 directly from my laptop which sees the phone as a peripheral device. I am stuck with my iPad Mini as a vehicle to view Apple content, but it is useless as a platform to show my pictures. That renders my MacBook Pro as redundant, as I kept it only for syncing my iOS devices (and I have many), and I will migrate everything to my Surface Book.

Upgraded to iOS 11.0.3 and same issues persist. After syncing my iPhone 6 with iTunes from my MacBook Air using Photos as my image store and using folders and albums to file- all New Slbums appear empty on my iPhone. Sync gets to 5 of 5 preparing images to transfer and then blanks out and finishes (making the albums but not transferring the images)

This has been the case since iOS 11 and I have spent far too much time trying to re-sync. And fathom out what is going on and also of course I have been carefully reading this block of questions and answers as I will keep doing until the problem is sorted. Please Apple do something!!! Very frustrated long term Apple user since 1988!!

As mentioned in earlier posts, I am a serious amateur photographer with over 16,000 digital images in multiple folders that I have synced with my iOS devices (iPads and iPhones) for many years using iTunes. I depend on my iPad Mini 3 for presenting the photos. I also have tried the 11.0.3 update and it makes no difference whatsoever. I have even tried doing a few folders at a time -- which would take many hours of syncing and would be very inconvenient - but that does not work either. I have manages to get around 8000 images in multiple folders onto the iPad, but many folders remain partially synced and many folders are empty. I continue to get an error message "Sync cancelled because of device error".

I am surprised that there has been no Apple tech support comments on this exchange, as many professional photographers and serious amateurs rely on apple products. Sadly, it appears that Apple is now focusing on creating luxury consumer goods and no longer technologically advanced devices.

I have already replaced my iPhone 6s with a new Galaxy Note with a 256gb SD card, and moving pictures and music files to the card is simplicity itself. Plus, I still have a fingerprint reader, iris reader, and a headphone jack, thank you very much, in addition to an amazing camera and display.

I can use my Surface Book laptop in tablet mode as an alternative presentation device, which relegates my MacBook Pro to the kitchen as an extra laptop for reading the paper in the morning online.

And my iPad mini joins our apple TV devices as platforms to view apple content only and nothing else. I have no more time to waste trying to sync my photos.

So much for changing the world, Mr. Cook.

I'm having the same issue getting iTunes 12.7 to USB sync photos with my iPad Air II. I can add an additional related problem. I downloaded the MyPics and PhotoVault apps to try and circumvent the whole Photos sync process. Using the Files protocol I tried to transfer a file of photos. Both apps crashed during the process. MyPics finally got some of the images but PhotoVault didn't. Like others, I'm a photographer and depend on my iPad to display my images. Not happy!
