Photos app on iPhone not syncing in iOS 11

I upgraded my iPhone7, iPad AIr and iPad Pro to iOS 11.

The iPad Air had stopped syncing Photos properly, reboots did not correct it, turning off ICloud Photo Library and Upload to My PhotoStream, rebooting and then turning them back on did not work. I finally logged out of my iCloud account and back in, and it seems to be resolved on that device a few days back.

But now the iPhone 7 is doing the same thing. I repeated these steps of turning off ICloud Photo Library and Upload to My PhotoStream, rebooting and then turning them back on, and I did get the Photo to sync partially, but it stopped at 38,880 (photos and videos), whereas the Mac on Sierra, and the two iPads all show 57.755 (photos and videos).

I've made sure that I'm on wifi (I did have it set to allow cellular too).

With the Photos app open and the phone on the charger, I can see periodically that something is working briefly (the swirl next to the wifi signal) but the photos count is stagnant at 38,880.

I've also tried resetting the Network Settings.

I guess my next step is to log out of my iCloud account on the iPhone entirely, reboot and log in again.

Anyone else with this issue find another less painful fix?

I see that this thread has been going on for some time and I am reticent to offer such a simple solution, but it worked for me.

You mentioned turning off both “iCloud Photo Library” and “Upload to my Photo Stream”. I assume that means that you previously had both settings on. So did I. When I switched off “Upload to my Photo Stream” on all my devices, this problem was resolved within a day (it takes time for all of the missing photos to upload or download, so the problem is not fixed immediately).

It appears, from my research, that there is no need to have both settings on. If you have iCloud Photo Library, you don‘t need “upload to my Photostream”. The iCloud Photo Library, if activated on all devices logged into the same iCloud account, already uploads all. The photostream is a short term syncing solution for those who do not want to pay for the storage for iCloud Photo Library.

So, once I turned Photo Stream off, and iCloud Photo Library on, on all my devices. It fixed the problem for me.

I said I was reticent to post, because I am not sure this will work for all, and because it seems silly that, if that is the problem, Apple would not warn people or, even better, make it impossible not to select both options at the same time.

So, for what it is worth, here are my current iPad Pro settings for Photos:

Have been syncing like crazy! iOS 11.0.3 with iPhone 6 using iTunes and usb. After trying everything other than total reset of my iPhone I now have 57,000 odd photos with no album filing as is in Photos App!!

Apple please do something to fix the sync issues in Photos!! I am a professional and need my Photos at hand and filed in a way that I can reference quickly. I spent a lot of time making special albums based on country, subject matter etc - all gone on my iPhone!!! I repeat - some sort of comment from Apple would be much appreciated! Thanks

As I mentioned above, I started migrating my photographs from Apple to a PC/Android ecosystem last summer when this problem first arose with my iPhone 6s and iPad Mini 3. This was a an expensive proposition as it involved new equipment, but at least with Adobe Creative Cloud I didn't need to purchase new software (Lightroom, Photoshop, etc.). I reset my old 6s and my iPad Mini 3 several times and reinstalled all the photos as well as all the apps. However, with the latest updates to iOS and iTunes, this no longer works, and resetting devices is not a legitimate option in any event. I am easily able to move pictures, now domiciled on a new Surface Book (1TB storage, with enhanced graphics base and touch screen), onto a new Note 8 with a 256GB micro sd card for photos. The iPad is a stone, usable only for viewing Apple content, which thankfully are only movies -- I never purchased music from iTunes for fear of compatibility issues. And my old MacBook Pro is relegated to the kitchen to look at emails and check websites (with Chrome, I might add). I have no more time to spend fooling around trying to work within the Apple ecosystem, when Apple is clearly ignoring our small but technologically demanding group of professional and amateur photographers in favor of making luxury consumer goods. It is obvious that Apple is no longer innovating.

The problem with this approach is that many of us have far too many pictures to transfer than can be handled by iCloud storage, which also compresses the pictures. Also, I have no need for yet another backup plan. I suppose I cluld put all my pics into Dropbox (where I have 1TB of storage), and then open them on the iPad and other iOS devices. But why go through all this hassle? I see no benefits from staying in the outdated Apple ecosystem any longer, when it seems pretty clear that they are no longer interested in customers like me (who had had an all-apple family until now).

I would hope this has reached the attention of the "engineering team"! I've been using Apple products since the IIe and this is the most significant bug to affect my use over that time. Especially since they've left us no way to downgrade to IOS 10.3.3. Apple, if you're listening and can't fix this quickly please re-sign 10.3.3. I hope more people complain to Apple Care or their local "Genius".

Sadly, this does not work for those with many folders with large numbers of digital files. I suspect that Apple does not want to solve this problem, as they likely want to force everyone into the consumer-oriented iCloud storage platform. In any case, I have moved on at least with the phone, and have a Note 8 which solves this issue immediately and, frankly, is superior in all respects to the iPhone X from what I have seen. I have apple TVs and my iPad mini to look at the apple content I have purchased. I'll use my Surface Book in tablet mode to show pictures and look for a smaller tablet alternative, perhaps one offered by Amazon where the Prime Video is a fine replacement for Apple content. For what it is worth, if we are collectively a statistic, Apple stock is a short.

Hi, have just spent about 40 mins on phone with a very helpful lady from AppleCare Australia.

I have submitted some 30 screenshots of various iPhone 'Settings and Photo pages' on my iPhone 6

to illustrate the 'Empty Folders Syndrome' Have emphasised the problems started with iOS 11 and that I am currently running iOS 11.0.3 latest iTunes, Photos and High Sierra on my MacBook Air. I have 57,000 odd photos and 51 videos and can see them in date order if I look via Photos not Albums. If I choose Albums they are all empty except those that Apple sorts eg : panoramas, selfies and camera roll etc. Empty Albums : No thumbnail, No original title, just (0 from my mac). Apple will submit my report and screenshots to engineers and get back to me this coming Friday late afternoon Perth, Western Australian time. I will report back to this feed. Good Luck !!!

I'm having the same problem as everyone here. It's been like this since I updated to macOS High Sierra & iOS 11. The subsequent updates to iOS 11 has done nothing to fix the problem. I regret updating and have advised everyone around me not to until all these bugs are sorted out. Im so annoyed and frustrated with this and the time and energy I have wasted trying to fix this with stupid advice like rebooting, resetting etc.

This is not how Apple products should be. 😠

Same issue here. Photo's are on my Mac and my iPhone but not on my iPad. (and iPhone and iPad run on the latest software).

So strange that they do show up on iPhone and not on iPad, while they have the same iOS ?

on my iPad I get the message 'uploading 2857 pics' but that message has been there for days. No photos are added.

Has anyone found a solution yet?
