Photos app on iPhone not syncing in iOS 11

I upgraded my iPhone7, iPad AIr and iPad Pro to iOS 11.

The iPad Air had stopped syncing Photos properly, reboots did not correct it, turning off ICloud Photo Library and Upload to My PhotoStream, rebooting and then turning them back on did not work. I finally logged out of my iCloud account and back in, and it seems to be resolved on that device a few days back.

But now the iPhone 7 is doing the same thing. I repeated these steps of turning off ICloud Photo Library and Upload to My PhotoStream, rebooting and then turning them back on, and I did get the Photo to sync partially, but it stopped at 38,880 (photos and videos), whereas the Mac on Sierra, and the two iPads all show 57.755 (photos and videos).

I've made sure that I'm on wifi (I did have it set to allow cellular too).

With the Photos app open and the phone on the charger, I can see periodically that something is working briefly (the swirl next to the wifi signal) but the photos count is stagnant at 38,880.

I've also tried resetting the Network Settings.

I guess my next step is to log out of my iCloud account on the iPhone entirely, reboot and log in again.

Anyone else with this issue find another less painful fix?

I see that this thread has been going on for some time and I am reticent to offer such a simple solution, but it worked for me.

You mentioned turning off both “iCloud Photo Library” and “Upload to my Photo Stream”. I assume that means that you previously had both settings on. So did I. When I switched off “Upload to my Photo Stream” on all my devices, this problem was resolved within a day (it takes time for all of the missing photos to upload or download, so the problem is not fixed immediately).

It appears, from my research, that there is no need to have both settings on. If you have iCloud Photo Library, you don‘t need “upload to my Photostream”. The iCloud Photo Library, if activated on all devices logged into the same iCloud account, already uploads all. The photostream is a short term syncing solution for those who do not want to pay for the storage for iCloud Photo Library.

So, once I turned Photo Stream off, and iCloud Photo Library on, on all my devices. It fixed the problem for me.

I said I was reticent to post, because I am not sure this will work for all, and because it seems silly that, if that is the problem, Apple would not warn people or, even better, make it impossible not to select both options at the same time.

So, for what it is worth, here are my current iPad Pro settings for Photos:

After more than two months with Mac photos not syncing, and no sign of any move on Apple ‘s part to release a bug fix, I am wondering what hidden agenda is behind it all?

There has been no admission from Apple publicly that there is an issue, we are all having issues with unresolved Apple consultants on the case saying it will be solved with an update to software....and still waiting very impatiently now for that to happen.

What is going on? What is Apple planning that they have not fixed this bug.

I for one have had enough and now looking at something else to keep my 15000 or more photos in Albums and synced over my devices.

I cloud is not the answer as I want to retain albums and some semblance of order.

anyone got any good ideas apart from Google photos at this stage.

waiting for some positive action from Apple...

I have a very large photo library that has not synced to my new iPhone X despite waiting days. It continues to say updating. I have IOS 11.1.2. I've spent hours on the phone with Apple tech and have visited the genius bar (yesterday). I've had the phone for 1 week! I've been instructed to do a factory reset 3 times. Still waiting for my photos!!!!!!!

Buyer beware! I had the same very large photo library when I moved from my 5S to the 7. I've never experienced anything like this before. My suggestion...don't upgrade!

I don't think the beta 6 was specific to iPhone or iPad. I didn't download it. Several tech blogs were posting the change log. I used iTunes 12.7 and USB to sync to my iPad Air 2. For the past month, my experience was..... it generally took about 4 or 5 syncs to move only a handful of photos. But count me as a patient guy, every one of the syncs got me closer and eventually it got the job done. But I don't like it.

Further update - after a slightly promising start with 11.2, when 1700 pics copied across from PC to iPad in one go, it seems to have reverted to only about 150 - 300 copying at once, then a further 15 min wait, after ejecting iPad, unplugging it and plugging it in again, then waiting for iTunes to finish 'reading photos from xxxx', before another sync can start. At this rate, I might just get all the pics copied to the iPad by Christmas.....

Confirmed 11.2 does not fix this. My iPhone 6 plus Photos app is stuck trying to sync 13K photos and 34 videos. Probably triggered when I briefly asked for all content to sync. I can't get rid of this, even prior to the 11.2 upgrade; still stuck after upgrade. It is seeing this from the Windows 10 PC I am synching from apparently or an artifact from the sync pre-upgrade. Who knows? When I select just one small folder of 24 photos for the entire synch, the iPhone photos app is stuck thinking I want to sync 13K photos.

My iPad2, (IOS 9.x) however is syncs just fine to my Windows 10 machine.

In limbo until Apple reacts to this.

UPDATE : 3 December 2017

Still no usb sync of my user made photo albums

Installed iOS 11.2 and commenced usb sync. (Screenshots attached in order)

1 All the empty user made albums which were on my iPhone 6 were deleted by the sync.

2 No user made albums on my iPhone since the sync.

3 iTunes sync just goes through sync process and then just stops.

4 The bar data graph now shows reading which is possibly more accurate.

Sad to say, I agree with 9786.

Got a bit excited when the upgrade arrived but this soon turned to disappointment yet again when I could not sync more than about 2000 of my substantial photo collection, in albums, using iTunes and the new OS.

It took several syncs of around 1000 each time with no albums appearing until the end when eventually I had displayed a number of my albums with some photos in them... not my entire collection and not entire albums populated with their photo.

This was achieved by syncing my ipad many times before it eventually failed to even sync at all, just said reading photos library before giving up and bombing out.

I will try tomorrow and maybe just maybe I can put another 2000 pics back to my ipad.

Very disappointing response from Apple to this issue which has now been around since September.

Why are they not fixing the problem???? or giving us an alternative method of syncing Mac iPad and iPhone????

Not Happy

Is this where we come to see why we "cannot sync Photos on OSX with iOS"?

GOD **** why aren't my photos on the MacBook Pro when I took some photos this morning? I've tried checking and unchecking the two boxes [iCloud Photo Library and Photo Stream] about 15 times both on the MBP and the iPhone and nothing is helping it sync. Since when did the ecosystems stop synching?

Dec 3, 2017 8:14 AM in response to BAYBROOK

This is where we come and HOPE to see somebody coming up with a solution, either official or unofficial, so far unfortunately, it is just a bunch of frustrated users moaning and groaning. :-((((

I *suspect* that the current structure of iOS 11.0 to 11.2 are not working with the demands of photo synchers. To fix this might demand the engineers to do more than just ”applying a patch”, they might have to rip the photo app apart and rebuild it from the ground up, which is why it took them so long. Just my guess (I don't know anything more)

Dec 3, 2017 12:20 PM in response to dagaus190

OK - so I'm trying to wrap my mind around what the actual problem is being complained about in this thread. Maybe its because I don't use my Apple ecosystem the same way many in this thread do...

Are you tying to sync photos from an Apple device (iPhone, iPad, etc.) to a Mac computer? Or are you trying to do this automatically (via iCloud maybe)?

Or are you trying to have 100% of your photos, regardless of where they normally reside, present on every device?

For example - My iPhone currently has 2,114 photos in the on-board photos folder. My MacBook Pro's Photos.app 18,086 photos (many of which I have no interest in carrying on my iPhone or iPad Pro). I connect my iPhone to my MacBook Pro and import all the new photos... and I've had no problem with the functionality - regardless of regular release or Beta releases of iOS...

Are you able to sync all the photos you want to your device, or have you found some missing?

Ok my problem, as listed in more detail somewhere above.

I have over 25000 photos on my MBP Photos App arranged in Years (100 albums/folders). Also have Named people on photos app as well.

Now since iOS 11 when I sync :

Only around 1000 photos appear. All the other albums folders are present, but are empty. Whilst syncing it says it is copying the 25000 photos across. The purple bar at the bottom of iTunes says this.

Sometimes the sync finishes. Other times it says an error occurs.

Not all the photos and album appear on “People on my Mac” folder. Several are duplicates albums/folders of the same people.

I don’t use iCloud for photos. Never have. I always sync using USB.

Never had any problems in all the years (since iPad 2) in syncing all my photos. I am using iPad Pro now. I need all all photos. I travel a lot (to places with no WiFi, hence not using iCloud for photos).

1759 asked of we have contacted Apple support.. of course we have.

That was my first port of call once photos stopped syncing from my Mac to ipad and iphone in late September.

My case no. 100331783091

I have spent many hours on the phone with a number of consultants before being handed over to a so called expert. No solution whatsoever. Error reports and diagnosis reports from my computer have been given to Apple and these were supposed to have been given to engineers.

Any contact with my consultant now is unanswered... in spite of me sending emails on four occasions in the past two months.

A total waste of time on my part to achieve absolutely nothing positive.

the latest iOS update fails to make any difference and still photos are not syncing as they once did.

Apple, how come Google can get photos to sync between devices (Mac ipad iphone in an instant) and you have failed to get this working after t least two months.

I worked perfectly before then so what have you done to change all this?

Totally frustrated.
