Photos app on iPhone not syncing in iOS 11

I upgraded my iPhone7, iPad AIr and iPad Pro to iOS 11.

The iPad Air had stopped syncing Photos properly, reboots did not correct it, turning off ICloud Photo Library and Upload to My PhotoStream, rebooting and then turning them back on did not work. I finally logged out of my iCloud account and back in, and it seems to be resolved on that device a few days back.

But now the iPhone 7 is doing the same thing. I repeated these steps of turning off ICloud Photo Library and Upload to My PhotoStream, rebooting and then turning them back on, and I did get the Photo to sync partially, but it stopped at 38,880 (photos and videos), whereas the Mac on Sierra, and the two iPads all show 57.755 (photos and videos).

I've made sure that I'm on wifi (I did have it set to allow cellular too).

With the Photos app open and the phone on the charger, I can see periodically that something is working briefly (the swirl next to the wifi signal) but the photos count is stagnant at 38,880.

I've also tried resetting the Network Settings.

I guess my next step is to log out of my iCloud account on the iPhone entirely, reboot and log in again.

Anyone else with this issue find another less painful fix?

I see that this thread has been going on for some time and I am reticent to offer such a simple solution, but it worked for me.

You mentioned turning off both “iCloud Photo Library” and “Upload to my Photo Stream”. I assume that means that you previously had both settings on. So did I. When I switched off “Upload to my Photo Stream” on all my devices, this problem was resolved within a day (it takes time for all of the missing photos to upload or download, so the problem is not fixed immediately).

It appears, from my research, that there is no need to have both settings on. If you have iCloud Photo Library, you don‘t need “upload to my Photostream”. The iCloud Photo Library, if activated on all devices logged into the same iCloud account, already uploads all. The photostream is a short term syncing solution for those who do not want to pay for the storage for iCloud Photo Library.

So, once I turned Photo Stream off, and iCloud Photo Library on, on all my devices. It fixed the problem for me.

I said I was reticent to post, because I am not sure this will work for all, and because it seems silly that, if that is the problem, Apple would not warn people or, even better, make it impossible not to select both options at the same time.

So, for what it is worth, here are my current iPad Pro settings for Photos:

Hi all, I'm back with another report. I'm trying to get a total 138 photos (in 3 different new folders) into my ipad Air 2, which already had 5700+ photos in it, in multiple folders.

Just like the last time (which was a few weeks ago) it took many syncs. The first sync created the 3 new folders but with nothing in them. The next few syncs resulted in no new photos being moved over, although fortunately none in the ipad were removed.

Then I decided to reboot my Windows 10 PC. Then things started to happen......

The next sync reported that 1244 photos need to be synced (not 138). But at the end, the ipad reported 5104 pics on the device. After a reboot of the PC and the ipad, I synced again. This time, itunes says 926 pics need to go over. At the end, there were 5432 pics reported on the device. I rebooted both PC and ipad again, the next sync reported 576 pics need to go over, at the end there were 5759 pics on it. It's getting closer ⚠. The next and final sync says 240 pics need to be transfer, and this one was successful in synching the rest of the missing pics over.

It's similar to my last sync experience, which was a few weeks ago.

This is one of the main functionalities of owning an iPad, as far as I'm concerned. I do dread that one of these days Apple engineers would just give up on fixing this feature and remove it from iOS forever. Can you imagine that?

I am already researching other platforms just in case this happen. There are many Android tablets which can manage photos much better, and for a lot less $$$ and our wasted time.

All these comments about the engineers fixing it!!! in 2 weeks.

I have been waiting now for over two months for this problem to be addressed.

Any help from my ongoing apple support consultant is now non existent. She no longer contacts me or answers my emails.

I agree totally abysmal support from Apple and certainly enough to send anyone to other platforms.

I too will be very wary about going with Apple when next I need new hardware.

Totally inexcusable service from a company who prided itself in being the best graphics platformPLEASE give us a CHRISTMAS present with a fix so our devices work as they should

Steve Jobs would be rolling in his grave. In his days, Apple would never ever released a product (including software and operating systems) as half baked as this. While iOS has some interesting functionalities, this huge bug on photo syncing is a major step backwards and embarassment for the company. And I am very surprised that the main stream media or tech blogs haven't covered this in a big way. Apple brasses in no way feel there is any urgency to fix it. They just put a couple of guys on it, and it may take months, or never!

I have contributed to this thread before, and I expect this will my last post. There remain two distinct strains in the conversation.

One involves people who sync Photos from a Mac (or PC) to iOS devices through the iCloud service. I do not do that, and I have no comment other than some people seem to be able to do this again after recent upgrades.

The second, and more sever, problem is for people like me with 10,000+ photographs (some taken with iPhones but most with other cameras, SLRs, etc.) domiciled on Macs (in my case) or PCs (also me now, as I will discuss) aand synce to iOS devices, iPhone and iPads, through iTunes. I have been doing this for 10 years since the original iPhone, and i purchased within the last year a replacement iPad Mini with maximum HD capacity as my primary photo display. Starting last summer with iOS upgrades, this iTunes sync mechanism stopped working and continues not to work despite hundreds of complaints directly to Apple and on this support thread.

I have concluded that this is intentional on Apple's part. It is too specific to be an accident. My conclusion is that in the future Apple has abandoned this sector of their market - professional and high-end amateur photographers - in favor of a commercial product ecosystem which syncs iPhone photos to Macs and other devices through the fee-based iCloud service. I have no use for iCloud for many reasons, mostly technical, and because redundant for me.

I have already switched my primary computer to the latest Surface Book with 1TB drive, light years ahead of my MacBook Pro. And I upgraded my iPhone 6s to the new Note 8 and added a 256gb card. And voila, all of these stupid Apple problems go away.

I don't need to change the world. I need tech that works. And I am afraid Apple now produces so-so hardware, today mostly bling, which we accepted in the past because of the convenience and quality of the iOS ecosystem. That ecosystem is now badly broken. So I recommend that this group stop complaining and praying from Steve Job's ghost to appear and fix the company, and move on. There is a world of better tech - hardware and software - at your fingertips once the mourning period is over, at far lower cost than the Mac Universe.

I am in a similar situation. I hope you are wrong though and Apple fixes the sync issues between iTunes and iOS devices for large libraries via USB, but I am not counting on it.

I like the iPad and iPhone and Mac (been using it since a 128k Mac and an Apple ][+ before that) and one of the killer features has been the ability to have all your photos everywhere - Apple TV, iOS, Mac with all the bells and whistles (live photos, sync, books, cards etc), but the bugginess has made it untenable.

I, too, am hoping that Apple is not abandoning the pro/semi-pro/advanced photographers market by withdrawing/depreciating the functionality of iOS photos. So far they have not publicly acknowledging the bug! I am at a loss to explain why they haven't done that -- as they have done to a number of unrelated iOS bugs (some of which already having been patched). This one is much more serious and so far no fixes. If in indeed it is not fixable, they should acknowledge it, and allow users to roll back to iOS 10.3 which doesn't have this bug. They're just afraid that once the finality sets in, pro photographers will be fleeing to other platforms.

With over 53,000 Photos I need those user made albums on my iPhone some of which go back some 10 years.

Updated yet again today my open Apple case with my AppleCare consultant.

I said :

I

am at a loss to know why the Apple Engineers

have not reported back yet! It’s been over 2 months

with no feedback!

This is such a huge problem!

Refer :

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8079251?answerId=32640619022#32640619022&start=200&tstart=0

All they need to report is :

1 We are aware of the problem and working on a solution.

2 The same as above but no solution found yet!

3 A solution has been found but not yet implemented.

4 A solution has been implemented in the next ios release.

5 Apple have decided user made albums are being phased out!

although iTunes current release retains the user album menu item.

6 Any feedback would be appreciated rather than none!

Not being able to usb sync User Photo Albums to iOS devices

is unacceptable when this has been the norm over many, many years!!

This is absolutely essential to Professional Photographers

and associated industries.

Please bring this to the attention of the Apple Engineers again

and ask them for a statement

Cheers All

Exactly. I have a schedule with my senior apple consultant tomorrow and the engineers have gotten back to her and that they want me to do some further trouble shooting. Ok, Im game, but I have submitted 7 bug reports and have an open case. I have used 3 ipads (one was replaced because of this issue), 4 phones, 3 computers, 4 different photo libraries, 4 different USB cables, used WiFi, done reboots of the ios device, done complete resets of all data and settings, used beta versions of ios 11 in the hopes that it might be fixed. What else do they need? You know what? ios 10.3.3 actually worked! Anyway, I will post what this trouble shooting entails.
