Photos app on iPhone not syncing in iOS 11

I upgraded my iPhone7, iPad AIr and iPad Pro to iOS 11.

The iPad Air had stopped syncing Photos properly, reboots did not correct it, turning off ICloud Photo Library and Upload to My PhotoStream, rebooting and then turning them back on did not work. I finally logged out of my iCloud account and back in, and it seems to be resolved on that device a few days back.

But now the iPhone 7 is doing the same thing. I repeated these steps of turning off ICloud Photo Library and Upload to My PhotoStream, rebooting and then turning them back on, and I did get the Photo to sync partially, but it stopped at 38,880 (photos and videos), whereas the Mac on Sierra, and the two iPads all show 57.755 (photos and videos).

I've made sure that I'm on wifi (I did have it set to allow cellular too).

With the Photos app open and the phone on the charger, I can see periodically that something is working briefly (the swirl next to the wifi signal) but the photos count is stagnant at 38,880.

I've also tried resetting the Network Settings.

I guess my next step is to log out of my iCloud account on the iPhone entirely, reboot and log in again.

Anyone else with this issue find another less painful fix?

I see that this thread has been going on for some time and I am reticent to offer such a simple solution, but it worked for me.

You mentioned turning off both “iCloud Photo Library” and “Upload to my Photo Stream”. I assume that means that you previously had both settings on. So did I. When I switched off “Upload to my Photo Stream” on all my devices, this problem was resolved within a day (it takes time for all of the missing photos to upload or download, so the problem is not fixed immediately).

It appears, from my research, that there is no need to have both settings on. If you have iCloud Photo Library, you don‘t need “upload to my Photostream”. The iCloud Photo Library, if activated on all devices logged into the same iCloud account, already uploads all. The photostream is a short term syncing solution for those who do not want to pay for the storage for iCloud Photo Library.

So, once I turned Photo Stream off, and iCloud Photo Library on, on all my devices. It fixed the problem for me.

I said I was reticent to post, because I am not sure this will work for all, and because it seems silly that, if that is the problem, Apple would not warn people or, even better, make it impossible not to select both options at the same time.

So, for what it is worth, here are my current iPad Pro settings for Photos:

Yes, Google photos has no issues on my iPhone/ipad, and works flawlessly. I’m glad i have this as i rely on it for doing what IOS should do.

After my last post i did finally get my images across to my other devices. It took around 5 hours to upload about 44 images.

One thing i noticed was my ipad had paused uploading automatically a few times, due to saving battey. This is strange as i was on around 90% so there was no need for this, and unless I went in to a certain screen I wouldn’t have known about this. Total power drop was less than 7%. Very poor programming on Apples part IMO.

The situation is a disaster! I have had sync issues ever since OS 11 update. Have spent many hours with Applehelp consultant and NO SOLUTION.

keep getting told the engineers will fix it and there will be a software update to fix it all.

There has been an update to 11.1 and also updates for iPad and iPhone...have installed these. Still unable to sync.

Yesterday a security update for Mac was installed and then I did High Sierra update.

This was advertised as a revolution for Mac Photos...what a joke!!

Tried a sync with iTunes, no iCloud,of Mac photos pics. It kept crashing before any pics were synced. Now have no photos in albums listed on my iPad. There are around 15000 pics to sync Which was never difficult before iOS 11 came along.

Come on Apple...this is becoming beyond a joke. Give us a solution so we can sync photos onto all devices via iTunes without any mistakes!

Becoming very disappointed with heading to Mac from Windows

Searching Google for some answers, I found reference to an article saying Photos for Mac will be phased out from December.

Is this true? If so it may well explain why Apple are not addressing the sync issues with OS higher than 10.

What alternative will they provide or will we need to go to Google Photos and their sync and back up app.?

Anyone with answers to this?

Ange

I have no idea what Apple will do. However two thoughts occur to me, Apple is pretty invested in pictures so I can't see them just dropping Photos without alternatives. However, if they do there would be a bunch of third party replacements for us to wade through.

Also, I don't think this sync bug is a Mac issue, I think its an IOS issue. IOS 10 works fine while 11 doesn't on same Mac. Someone else commented that IOS 11 has a new internal file system. I suspect its related to this.

I have my 20,000+ pictures on both my MB Pro and on my Surface Book (W10 PC), synchronized with Sugarsync. I have the same problem with iTunes sync to my iPad (and formerly on my iPhone 6s) with both machines, so the problem is not unique to Mac computers. As I have said before, I have already replaced my 6s with a Note 8 and love it; moving pictures is simplicity itself. My iPad is a brick, as this was my primary device for displaying computers. I now use my Surface Book as my primary computer for photos, too. I doubt Apple will ever fix this problem as they will likely support only people who use iCloud storage and iCloud sync.

It is the third time visit Apple Store and try to fix the sync problem. Since I update iOS 11.03, photos could not sync to iCloud. I have reset and restore the iPhone 3times... but it was still not working. Now no more photo upload to iCloud. The staff told me to extract all the photo from iCloud and delete every photos and put it back to iCloud again. During this process, I have loss 5xxx out of 27000 photos... what Apple did for the new IOS ? Money is spend for iCloud and upgrade to 200gb, but it was not functioned, should Apple Pay back to their customers for the not function services?

All my devices are suffering with this sync issue, but I’m also losing a lot of photos. I noticed last night that a few of my newer photos have been ‘backed up’ to iCloud as very low res blurry images. Going to iCloud on my desktop confirms this so it seems ive lost them forever As they now appear the same on all devices.

This is not the first time and I’m sure its not the last. This is unacceptable and ill not be buying any more Apple products In the future.

I too have noticed significant degradation in some of my images stored in Photos, and I don’t have compression checked, nor do I upload them to iCloud. So thank you for mentioning that.

Right now I’d be happy to just have my syncing back between my Mac’s Photos app and my iPhone’s Photos app.

I don’t have time to wait around longer for Apple on the hope they will fix this. I’m going to have to search for other applications to take Photos’ place that will sync between my Mac and iPhone.

Very unhappy about this.

This situation is completely unacceptable.

Can anyone recommend good alternative photo management software that will:

  • Import my photos from my Mac photo library
  • Sync photos back & forth between my MacBook Pro and iPhone 6+
  • Over a USB connection without having to do a cloud upload/download
  • Allow me to organize my photos in named albums or folders

That's really all I need Photos for. But I have 61,000 photos to manage.

Thanks for any suggestions here.

No thanks to Apple.

Unfortunately, it did not work for me. You are very lucky.

For those who still do not have any solution to this nightmare,

for those who spent a lot of hours and days trying to solve it,

for those who are frustrated, what else we can do except

waiting ? I think all of us have tried almost every feasible and

possible solution without success .

Very disappointed . I do not think APPLE support does not

know how to solve it. Two months since ios 11 was released.

I think they should know the cause by now.

APPLE support: Please reply. Give us something to work with.

Let us be part of the solution. But, do not let us alone with this

problem. Please !

Add me to the list of people with this problem. My wife's large Photos library, which has always synced fine between her iMac, iPad and IPhone 7 has just flat out stopped syncing through iCloud since updating to IOS 11. Wiping and restoring the iPad as new and selecting optimizing photos almost got all the photos and albums to download.

But wiping and restoring the iPhone and trying to download originals- which is her preference, caused the process to simply stop partway through.

I still have an open case with Apple in regard to syncing problems Eg: my collection of hundreds of albums showing up empty on my iPhone after many, many . . . Usb Syncs! All was perfect under iOS 10 and before!!

Another issue is that the iTunes bar chart supposedly to show the volume storage distribution on my iPhone hasn’t worked since installing iOS 11.

This bar chart states 57.02 GB free when in fact my iPhone has 21.51 GB free!

Does anyone else have this same anomaly?

Thanks
