Photos app on iPhone not syncing in iOS 11

I upgraded my iPhone7, iPad AIr and iPad Pro to iOS 11.

The iPad Air had stopped syncing Photos properly, reboots did not correct it, turning off ICloud Photo Library and Upload to My PhotoStream, rebooting and then turning them back on did not work. I finally logged out of my iCloud account and back in, and it seems to be resolved on that device a few days back.

But now the iPhone 7 is doing the same thing. I repeated these steps of turning off ICloud Photo Library and Upload to My PhotoStream, rebooting and then turning them back on, and I did get the Photo to sync partially, but it stopped at 38,880 (photos and videos), whereas the Mac on Sierra, and the two iPads all show 57.755 (photos and videos).

I've made sure that I'm on wifi (I did have it set to allow cellular too).

With the Photos app open and the phone on the charger, I can see periodically that something is working briefly (the swirl next to the wifi signal) but the photos count is stagnant at 38,880.

I've also tried resetting the Network Settings.

I guess my next step is to log out of my iCloud account on the iPhone entirely, reboot and log in again.

Anyone else with this issue find another less painful fix?

I see that this thread has been going on for some time and I am reticent to offer such a simple solution, but it worked for me.

You mentioned turning off both “iCloud Photo Library” and “Upload to my Photo Stream”. I assume that means that you previously had both settings on. So did I. When I switched off “Upload to my Photo Stream” on all my devices, this problem was resolved within a day (it takes time for all of the missing photos to upload or download, so the problem is not fixed immediately).

It appears, from my research, that there is no need to have both settings on. If you have iCloud Photo Library, you don‘t need “upload to my Photostream”. The iCloud Photo Library, if activated on all devices logged into the same iCloud account, already uploads all. The photostream is a short term syncing solution for those who do not want to pay for the storage for iCloud Photo Library.

So, once I turned Photo Stream off, and iCloud Photo Library on, on all my devices. It fixed the problem for me.

I said I was reticent to post, because I am not sure this will work for all, and because it seems silly that, if that is the problem, Apple would not warn people or, even better, make it impossible not to select both options at the same time.

So, for what it is worth, here are my current iPad Pro settings for Photos:

Since this problem is limited to the newer iPads on 11.x OS many of us no longer have skin in the game as there are work arounds. However, for those affected, this flaw can have major impact on a professional level. My iPad is mainly used as a portable image sharing device.

Someone up thread suggests engaging the technical media, who would relish a story such as this. A serious flaw in the number one device provider ecosystem, impacting professional and casual users.

Apple doesn’t understand how important this is. They have no legal risk as our acceptance of OS updates indemnify Apple from consequences.

The only way to pinch Apple is through the marketplace.

That is exactly what my advisor said to me. They took plenty of log files from me and we spent hours on the phone. The last time he called they told me the developers now have everything they need and will be working on the problem. He didn't tell me it was a problem with iTunes though. But I don't really care if it is iTunes or IOS 11. All I care about is them fixing it.

Personally I don’t buy the iTunes angle myself as I’ve had iOS 10.3.3 sync just fine and turn right around using the same iTunes version with ios 11 and bomb. I still have an iPad on 10.3.3 which syncs fine on the present iTunes version.

Maybe it is iTunes, but I find it strange that I can sync my iphones in full in one try but not the iPads on iOS 11. In either case, they need to fix this whatever it is and soon.

Bookem4096, most everyone has the same issue. Mine is exactly like yours, save for me having an ipad 5th Gen/2017.

A couple guys here said Apple acknowledged they are aware of the issue and the high volume of complaints. Apparently the problem is within itunes.

With the frequency of itunes updates you would think it can be fixed fairly quickly. Let’s hope so. The money we all invest in Apple products is too high not to have it fixed quickly.

Same here. I am running the latest version of iOS / Mac. OS / iTunes and Photos.

Trying to sync around 58,000 photos all in specific user made albums in Photos via USB to my iPhone 6.

I finish up with empty user made albums or sometimes no albums, although all photos are there on my iPhone under Apple's date or topic fiing system.

iTunes is the translator between the Photos app and the iOS. It is not talking as it should

to iOS 11 and we all know it did perfectly well talking to iOS 10 and to previous versions

of the iOS.

Let's hope that we can all get back to normality as we head into 2018.

All the best to all contributors.

Been a few weeks since I posted to this thread, although I’ve continued to follow the posts, but have been having exact same problem as everyone else, since September. Collection of 24k+ photos on Windows PC, everything updated to latest versions (iTunes, iOS etc), but still no joy in transferring to iPad mini 2, despite no previous problems. Only since iOS 11. To update, no problems transferring pics via iTunes to old iPad 2 on iOS 9.3.3, but iPad mini on iOS 11.2.1 just keeps crashing with ‘internal device error’ message. FWIW, just got new iPhone 8 Plus, on iOS 11.2.1, and after restoring backup from previous 6S, synced via iTunes and all 24k pics transferred in one go, in mega short time (compared to what I’ve been used to in the past on iPad mini 2, when it was syncing OK). Whole lot transferred in about 30 mins (not sure exactly, as I left it to get on with it, expecting it to take hours, but realised it had finished after about 45 mins). So as far as I can see, problem only occurs with iPads running iOS 11. No idea whether it’s iTunes or iOS causing problem, but either way, Apple need to sort this soon!

Apple have absolutely done it this time.

i have had no trouble importing my camera photos into Mac photos until I did the latest update for my iPad.

it now does not use the device I connect to my iPad to import my camera photos.

i am now totally unable to import my camera photos and absolutely disgusted with the way Apple are treating their users.

why are the directors getting massive bonuses? When we are left unable to use their products as they are advertised to be used.

where is the fix for the photos issue that hS been promised for the last 3 months?

Totally disillusioned with Apple/Mac and their iOS

Ugh! I have had this issue off and on for months now. The latest is happening right now. Photos have not synced between my iPhone X and iPad Pro 10.5 since early yesterday. I don’t understand why it works sometimes and doesn’t work other times. All I know is it’s aggravating for something that is touted as “seedless.” I’m running the latest software. I don’t get it.
