Photos app on iPhone not syncing in iOS 11

I upgraded my iPhone7, iPad AIr and iPad Pro to iOS 11.

The iPad Air had stopped syncing Photos properly, reboots did not correct it, turning off ICloud Photo Library and Upload to My PhotoStream, rebooting and then turning them back on did not work. I finally logged out of my iCloud account and back in, and it seems to be resolved on that device a few days back.

But now the iPhone 7 is doing the same thing. I repeated these steps of turning off ICloud Photo Library and Upload to My PhotoStream, rebooting and then turning them back on, and I did get the Photo to sync partially, but it stopped at 38,880 (photos and videos), whereas the Mac on Sierra, and the two iPads all show 57.755 (photos and videos).

I've made sure that I'm on wifi (I did have it set to allow cellular too).

With the Photos app open and the phone on the charger, I can see periodically that something is working briefly (the swirl next to the wifi signal) but the photos count is stagnant at 38,880.

I've also tried resetting the Network Settings.

I guess my next step is to log out of my iCloud account on the iPhone entirely, reboot and log in again.

Anyone else with this issue find another less painful fix?

I see that this thread has been going on for some time and I am reticent to offer such a simple solution, but it worked for me.

You mentioned turning off both “iCloud Photo Library” and “Upload to my Photo Stream”. I assume that means that you previously had both settings on. So did I. When I switched off “Upload to my Photo Stream” on all my devices, this problem was resolved within a day (it takes time for all of the missing photos to upload or download, so the problem is not fixed immediately).

It appears, from my research, that there is no need to have both settings on. If you have iCloud Photo Library, you don‘t need “upload to my Photostream”. The iCloud Photo Library, if activated on all devices logged into the same iCloud account, already uploads all. The photostream is a short term syncing solution for those who do not want to pay for the storage for iCloud Photo Library.

So, once I turned Photo Stream off, and iCloud Photo Library on, on all my devices. It fixed the problem for me.

I said I was reticent to post, because I am not sure this will work for all, and because it seems silly that, if that is the problem, Apple would not warn people or, even better, make it impossible not to select both options at the same time.

So, for what it is worth, here are my current iPad Pro settings for Photos:

Sad isn't it. I worked for Oracle, and we would test the **** out of every function of a new release, via extensive test scripts often for a system with only 100 users. Apple should have discovered this using a basic test script and held back the iOS upgrade.

Apple looks bad for this. I am advising persons not to get new iPads, which was once a wonderful product worth waiting in line to purchase.

I agree. That said, with all the knowledge "they" have, you think it would be a speedy fix.

One could asume it's something major due to the length of time the issue has been ongoing.

Let's hope they don't have to reinvent itunes to fix it.

What are the chances they're about to separate photo sync from itunes such as what happened with the app end of things.

Who knows

The craziness and complete lack of Apple response continues and is damning.

Without any expectations (based on the great posts of others) I just gave sync a few shots - what a disaster! One album that has 275 pictures in it synched as follows:

Attempt 1: Apple 8+: 27 pictures and iPad Pro: 56 pictures

Attempt 2: Apple 8+ 110 pictures and iPad Pro: 75 pictures

Attempt 3: Apple 8+ 94 pictures and iPad pro: 124 pictures

Grrrrrr....

Hi Gary and others

I do hope you are right. For the past 3+ months I have been waiting!!!

updates have been promised from senior consultants and I am still waiting. I am sick and tired of being told this and believe it is not on Apple’s agenda as an important issue.

The Apple name has been severely tainted by this glitch and I for one would choose other platforms when next I update my hardware.

Don’t hold your breath!

Hopefully this doesnt happen to you, but it happened to me too, it synced everything (after i erased and restored my phone) and then stopped working again.

The new update is just a security patch and thats it. Shouldnt make a difference, plus according to apple this an iTunes issue, rather than iOS.

But then again, apple has been acting very shady lately.

I wish I had such "luck"...... nope. In the past few months, it usually takes anywhere from 5 to 9 syncs to push only a handful of photos to my iPad Air 2. I use the USB method, don't use iCloud. Today, with iOS 11.2.2, and iTunes 12.7.2, I tried 3 times, each time the sync ended, the second and third time without even a message. Nothing was transferred over.

Songs and videos etc are still fine.

I think Apple was wrong when they said the issue was iTunes. This syncing problem always sound more like an ios11 problem to me. Plus I upgraded my iTunes first before iOS 11 came out and never had syncing issues until I upgraded to iOS 11. Glad to hear they finally got a handle on the problem and can’t wait for the next release. It only took them 4 months so it will be fixed in time for iOS 12! Ha! Don’t want to be negative. Just glad they finally listened and fixed it.

There's a little bit of progress with my devices since yesterday's totally unsuccessful syncs.

I rebooted my Windows. Everything else being the same (iOS 11.2.2, iTunes,12.7.2, USB sync), no additional photos to be my albums since yesterday, although there were about 10 photos that remained unsync'ed from yesterday.

It took me only 3 syncs this morning, and the whole thing was done. I have 6130 photos on various folders in my PC, and for the most part, the folders are all the same, with only 3 folders designated to receive new photos. First sync, iTunes says 989 photos to be copied, and at the end, 5561 photos are reported to be on the device. Second sync, copying 651, at the end iTunes says 5860 photos. Third sync, copying 352, iTunes says everything's there at the end, and they are!
