Photos app on iPhone not syncing in iOS 11

I upgraded my iPhone7, iPad AIr and iPad Pro to iOS 11.

The iPad Air had stopped syncing Photos properly, reboots did not correct it, turning off ICloud Photo Library and Upload to My PhotoStream, rebooting and then turning them back on did not work. I finally logged out of my iCloud account and back in, and it seems to be resolved on that device a few days back.

But now the iPhone 7 is doing the same thing. I repeated these steps of turning off ICloud Photo Library and Upload to My PhotoStream, rebooting and then turning them back on, and I did get the Photo to sync partially, but it stopped at 38,880 (photos and videos), whereas the Mac on Sierra, and the two iPads all show 57.755 (photos and videos).

I've made sure that I'm on wifi (I did have it set to allow cellular too).

With the Photos app open and the phone on the charger, I can see periodically that something is working briefly (the swirl next to the wifi signal) but the photos count is stagnant at 38,880.

I've also tried resetting the Network Settings.

I guess my next step is to log out of my iCloud account on the iPhone entirely, reboot and log in again.

Anyone else with this issue find another less painful fix?

I got the same problem, 20000+ plus photo can’t sync to my iPhone 8 and the sub folder are empty, but is was worked in my iPhone 7, iPad min 2 and MacBook Pro. I have been to Apple Store 2 times and tried to fix it. First time, the staff told me to re-set the iPhone, I have reset, however, less photo was sync to my iPhone, just few thousands of photo was sync, the staff told me that this is a rare case, just few people have this problem. After a week, I went to Apple Store again, staff helped me to reset and restore, they told me I should updated the latest version through computer and the power should be plugged to your iPhone, I have reset again and restore everything, however, this time even less photo sync to my phone, just 16xx, the staff told me better not to use iCloud to sync large amount of photos but this is the functions and selling point for Apple to backup everything to iCloud, I even change from 50gb plan to 200gb and paid for HK$23 per month. It spent 3 hours in Apple store and I have something to do then I must leave, when I back home and plug my iPhone to power supply, no more photos was sync to my iPhone. Yesterday, I have upgraded to IOS 11.03, reset everything again and plug in my power supply with good WiFi network and spend 10hours, however, this time just 14xx photos sync to my iPhone. It is quite disappointing and frustrating for this function, money was spent but could not get what I have expected.

Actually, my wife also had 1xxxx + photos and was changed from iPhone 6s to iPhone 8 plus but all her photos can sync to her iPhone 8. I think it is a bug for someone who has iPhone with IOS11 and MacBook.

Same with me. I have an iPad Pro and an iPod Touch (6g) syncing with my MacBook pro. And an iPad Air 2 (my Father’s) syncing with iMac. Both macs have the same photos arranged the same way. Neither are connected to each other and neither using iCloud Photo Library. Everything had been working perfectly for years. Everything on the Photos App on the iMac & MBP synced exactly to the iOS devices.

The folders for each album are there but the full number of photos for each album are not there. In some folders there are no photos at all. Its the same situation for the “People from My Mac” folder. Some folders have photos, some don’t. None have the full set. Another thing which has happened is that some of the folders from “People from My Mac” are appearing on the main “Albums” section on the Photos App. Some Named folders are appearing twice.

My only conclusion is that something in iOS 11 is causing this since everything is up to date and the same situation is happening to separate devices syncing in separate macs.

Apple are not Enhancing their reputation.

it is now at least three weeks since I have been unable to sync my Mac photos on iPad and iPhone. Guess what! Google have no trouble syncing all my photos on Mac, iPad and iPhone.

i am now going to use this and forget iTunes.

For a long time I used Google photos when I had Windows computers but let it go after I switched to Mac. i am now in the process of updating all of my photos using Google photos.

it’s worth a try if you have no luck and are fed up with Apple’s inability to fix the bug in an acceptable time.

This sync business is hit and miss. While my iPhone 8 had no problems syncing my iPad Pro 9.7 (via usb) and its replacement was a complete disaster. Seems the only luck I’ve had is to completely wipe the iPad and start over from last known good backup. Even then, it took around 20 syncs to get the job done. I tried difference iPads, different cables and different computers with different photo libraries. All with the same result.

Google photos seems to do a proper job, and its free. It backs up images automatically, just like the photos app does, but doesn’t muck anything up, unlike th photos app. It also seems to sync without issues.

Strangely enough 3rd party apps seem to show the images ok, at least the ones ive tested, so actually they arent lost, just not usable in the IOS photos app. What a stupid situation from a company this big.

I too have been through this for hours and numerous bug reports starting with the first betas of iOS 11. The problem is squarely with iOS 11 and nothing any Apple specialist can do to help you will solve the issues. I actually told the apple specialist senior adviser I felt sorry for her as there is nothing she could do to help me since there is no remedy in the present software framework that would allow her to bring me a solution. It is up to the willingness of Apple engineering to fix this bug infected release.

Now, what they could do but probably won’t is allow Apple to sign the reinstall Of 10.3.3. With 10.3.3, I could sync all my pics before i upgrade to iOS 11.x

Others may have arrived at the same conclusion but here's my experience for what its worth.

I am using an iPhone 7 with IOS 11.1.1 to sync with a MacBook Pro using iTunes 12.7.1.14 on Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.1.

When I tried to sync this morning, first by Wifi and then cable, I got the following message.User uploaded file

There are many 'solutions' posted like deleting the Photos app apple/iPod TV photo caches but in my config the caches appeared in a different places and made no difference to the message.

I found a temporary fix, of sorts. In iTunes I deselected Sync Photos on the iPhone's iTunes page. ReSync (I used cable for speed). I then turned of all the phone's photos connection with iCloud. I was then able to sync my photos again via iTunes where I use selected Pictures Folders.

To 'backup' and share my iPhone's camera roll I synced my phone with the Photos app. I've not explored wifi for this function but it certainly works with a cable.

Early last week I did the factory reset and restored from backup on all the devices and they all synced. Some required multiple restart of the sync to complete. Seems like the older ones needed more sync restarts to finish. However, they are starting to all show sync problems again now. I am going to try them all methodically see if they can complete, but I am not sure whether they will eventually yet or not.

11.2 seems to be working better for me, so far. I have it on both my iPad Pro and iP8+. Both are in sync. I tried adding and deleting photos on each and within seconds the other device would change to the reflect this. I had both screens open and they changed automaticall.

I do only have a very small set of images, 68, so i can only imagine those that have 1000’s are going to see a much slower result.

I have a photo library in the macOS photo app with many albums that reside on my mbpro to the tune of 17,818 pictures and 101 videos. This is my depository of media. I use it to sync to my iPads and iPhones. It is the main source. I have other computers setup the same way which also behave the same with this photo syncing issue. Bringing in new pics from the iOS device to the photo app on the mbpro is working fine. It is the syncing of my photo library to the iOS device that is the issue here. Syncing more that a few thousand pics or like my 17k pics becomes a challenge. I have tried multiple computers with different libraries, different cables, tried WiFi, tried a number of different iPads and the problem is consistent. I have done it from a complete restore where the first thing I do is sync all my pics with the same result of the sync bombing out a few thousand pics into the syncing process. I have to wait a minute for the iPad to become stable and then try the sync again. I may have to do this as much as 20 times to get all the pics I want on the device. During the sync, the iPad becomes irratic and The iOS device behaves as if it is overwhelmed and cannot keep up with the incoming data (photo app on the iOS device will usually crash) when on iTunes the message is usually “cancelling sync.” I do only manual syncs. I have used a brand new iPad 9.7, 2 different iPad Pro 9.7, iPad mini 4. I have not had any issues syncing both my iPhone 8s. This was not present in any ios prior to iOS 11. I only use iCloud to sync some shared albums and photo stream stuff, but the rest as in my archive of 17,818 pics resides on my mbpro.

Same issue here as everyone else! iPad Pro won’t sync but iPhone 8 syncs fine. Has been going on since iOS 11 install. iPhone 8 is running same iOS and doesn’t have an issue. I have about 14k photos. Tried just about everything everyone else has tried. Senior Apple tech says she thinks it’s hardware related, for some reason it’s not writing correctly and drops the sync. Sometimes an error, most of the time iTunes just “cancels sync” with no error. Idk, but she’s sending out a new iPad, so we’ll see....

Yeah, I’ve had my iPad replaced due to this problem. Nope, no cure with replacement so don’t be too bummed when nothing has changed with your replacement. I have an iPad mini 4, iPad 9.7, iPad Pro 9.7 (replaced) and all behave identically. It started with the first beta of iOS 11 and it’s been broken ever since. No problem syncing my iPhones. Your senior advisor apparently hasn’t been doing much research. I have two open cases and submitted more logs than I can remember both with the betas (7 bug reports filed on this) and through apple care senior advisors. Both my senior advisors are finally saying that engineering has the data needed and to expect a fix soon. I’m really not feeling too optimistic about a fix coming soon however.
