Since iOS11 Bluetooth keeps disconnecting

Since I upgraded to OS11 my iPhone 6 keeps disconnecting from the Bluetooth in my car, a Mazda 6 2015 vintage. To reconnect I have to select the phone on my cars infotainment unit and off it goes working for a while longer until it again disconnects mid song. This didn’t occur prior to OS11, any ideas?

Hello Pathfineroz,

I was having the same problem with my Bluetooth devices continuously disconnecting and then reconnecting on the iPhone after the iOS 11 update. It did this with all Bluetooth devices such as my car, powerbeats, etc. I use my Bluetooth headphones at the gym and on runs so you can see how this was a huge annoyance for me.

Anyways, this morning I was reading some articles and came across one that suggested I should reset all networks. I did that along with hitting the “forget this device” feature. I’ve been using my Bluetooth wireless headphones ever since I did that (for a little over an hour) and voila I haven’t had any disconnection issues!

I am not tech savvy whatsoever and I didn’t read through all of the comments in this discussion so hopefully I am not being repetitive and I am able to provide some assistance.

I was in to Apple the other day and managed to get to a supervisor who is looking after the case. They got me to go through getting a diagnostic setting and then recreating the Bluetooth dropouts and then sent all the logs to them. They think there is a frequency issue with the Bluetooth settings but his engineers are to ring me this week, hopefully with good news. If it’s a frequency issues he said they may be able to get it in the next release probably end of Jan! I’ll let you all know if/when I hear back.

Having the same problem with both an iphone 6 and iphone 8 (both now have 11.2 but it was happening prior to that as well) in my 2015 Subaru Crosstrek. It doesn't matter if it's bluetooth or USB connection. It just randomly disconnects all the time. I have a 75 minute commute and it's driving me crazy. it doesn't matter what app I'm using (itunes, spotify, audible, casts, etc). Sometimes it's every 3 minutes, 5 minutes, 20 minutes...there doesn't seem to be a pattern.

I've tried disabling all my notifications, buying a new USB cable, turning on do not disturb mode, pairing and repairing. Resetting the phone and the stereo. It's going to cause me to get into a crash trying to fumble with my phone while I'm driving.

Subaru was completely useless. They basically said "technically advances so fast so you better just get use to listening to the radio." Too bad most radio stations don't even come in for the length of my commute.

I have a similar problem with the bluetooth communicator on my motorcycle helmet. I have a Schuberth R2 with the built in communicator, and prior to iOS 11 I could stream podcasts uninterrupted.

Now, it cuts off randomly and though the connection gets re-established (I hear notifications from emails, messages, etc) my podcast stops playing. I know it's the phone because I have an old(er) Android phone that I now use a my podcast device and it works flawlessly. It also does this with my car's audio system.

My attempts to solve this have included factory resetting the phone, removing all pairings and re-pairing them, using airplane mode, none of it works.

This issue together with the now fairly unusable podcasts app is enough to make me consider leaving for a different manufacturer.

Since my last post, I did one more test that unfortunately further ensures that it's an IOS problem (the bluetooth disconnects).

I have tried a another pair of headphones (Bose Soundsport Bluetooth) and it still disconnected.

As I have previously stated, I was pretty sure it wasn't my headphones' fault since my plantronics bluetooth earpiece also disconnects randomly, as well as my watch.

My biggest problem is no that Apple is ignoring this temporarily, 'cause that means that they will get round to it eventually. It is that they don't acknowledge or know about it.

I thought about it. It's NOT REALLY A SMALL PROBLEM, especially since they dropped the jack from iPhone 7 on. That means that a large amount of users will rely on bluetooth for phonecalls as well as entertainment.

So, I was thinking ... how to get Apple's attention in a more direct fashion than just posting here and hoping that they would react ... ??? Any ideeas?

Also having the same problem, disconnecting and reconnecting with my Cardo Systems Scala Packtalk motorcycle intercom. Running IOS 11.2.5 on my iPhone SE. The phone is on the handlebar, so it is definitely within range.

This may happen several times while I have it on, and at no specific interval or with no obvious cause. It can happen during an active intercom session and also when no intercom session is active.

I have tried the following...

  • iphone DND settings, Silence: While iPhone is locked (checked)
  • checked DND while driving - set to activate manually.
  • rebooting the iphone
  • unpairing the iphone, "Forget"ing the connection, repairing
  • rebooting (not resetting) the PackTalk.

A new 11.2.6 update is installing right now so I will see if this clears it up the next time I ride

I’m having the same issue with my UE MEGABOOM Bluetooth speaker. I’ve had this speaker for 2 years and there was NEVER an issue with dropped connections. After installing iOS 11 (and subsequently 11.0.1), I can no longer use the speaker with my iPad Pro to listen to music. Literally, every few minutes the connection is dropped (very irritating). I should also say that I’ve been experiencing the same disconnections with my (new) AirPod earphones. Just awful! What is going on with iOS 11 and Bluetooth?

My wife is having a similar issue with her new iphone8. It pairs to her car(Mercury Montana with SYNC) and starts working, the drops the connection. In order for it to reconnect, she has to stop the car, delete the connections, and repair the phone.

In my car with a new iphone 8 Plus, I am getting playback issues where it seems like the audio intermittently cuts out, and it's very distracting to listen to audio at all in the car.

Are there just issues with the new Bluetooth implementation in the new phones?

Hello Everyone,

Well 11.02 hasn't helped. There is no consistent time frame between lost Blue Tooth disconnections. Sometimes I can have 20 minutes, other times a minute. I can't say I notice Blue Tooth disconnections when listening to the radio but I certainly do when streaming music via the medium, I will have to not use the streaming for a few days and see.

One thing I can say is that when Bluetooth is dropped and the radio starts playing again, the car status bar indicates that the phone is connecting again to Blue Tooth. If I select it it takes off from where it left off.

Kind Regards,

Pathfinder Oz
