No custom ringtones on iPhone 8 Plus/iOS 11

Find the file where the custom tones are stored and then follow KK5DO instructions listed above in this forum. I did and once I found the file on my computer where the tones are stored everything worked as KK5DO's instructions listed.

I have spent way to much time trying to figure out how to add a simple ringtone to my iphone x and your solution was absolutely perfect! I have been using android forever my last iPhone was an 4s. I was about to throw the x at a wall. you saved my sanity!

I'm ready to just change to a Samsung. This has gotten way beyond ridiculous. Apple has the capability to allow us to drag and drop custom ringtones. They are choosing to make it difficult so people will just give up and buy them. I REFUSE to buy my ringtones when I have already custom made over 150. I had them individualized for each of my contacts and then this. Thank goodness I saved them in a separate file (not iTunes). I'm tired of trying to get them on this **** phone. I regret upgrading from my iphone 7 to the iphone 8. I am looking forward to my next upgrade around November when I am seriously contemplating being done with Apple. I've already changed over from my MAC to a PC again. I'm very well aware of the benefits of using Apple products, but sometimes (like this one), I don't think those benefits outway the headaches.

I've read this whole thread and tried every suggestion and still have a similar problem:

1. My Tones section is empty bc I only have custom tones that I've made in garageband (I have never purchased tones).

2. I can see and play older tones on my 8+, but can't see them in Tones. If I can't see them in itunes12, then I can't delete/manage them.

3. I can drag and drop new custom tones into Tones with no problems. When I do add new custom tones, they are the only ones that show up (in solid black) on itunes12.

4. If I re-add custom tones that are already on my 8+, they show up grey'd out (not solid black).

I've tried restoring from backup with no change. May have to do a complete restore.

Thanks for solving this problem. I had the same situation but with a 5s that I bought for my wife and once the new Itunes came out with the tones missing I couldn't get my custom ringtones on her phone. I even went to Apple support and then to the Genius bar and nobody could solve it until I found your solution myself.

Easy: connect your iPhone to iTunes

Select Tones , On My Device

then select the one you want to delete, press the delete key on your keyboard

and iTunes will ask

Click Delete and check to have the sync with Tones unchecked

or if you like it, select only the Tone you want to sync with your iPhone and you are good to go

Once you plug your phone into the computer and it pops up in iTunes, only then you will see a Tones section under the device. You can locate your old ringtone files under Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Tones then copy and paste them into the tones list and Sync... worked for me!

I have tried everything to no avail. I hope Apple is listening. This is a deal breaker. Either restore ability to have customised ringtones or my next phone will be a Samsung.

I even thought of bringing back my iPhone 8, too bad I bought it in the States and I'm in Canada 😠

I'm having the same issue. But, I got the tones to show up on my 8+ iPhone. They are there... they can be selected. However, the will not play when someone calls. Apple, why didn't you test this? Please fix this or tell us what we are doing wrong!

What helped me was restoring a backup from the older iPhone 6s to iPhone 8

I had my issues to get the ringtones back as they were (solved installing iTunes 12.7 on a different disk )

Having my phone recognized by the new disk...etc

At the end though I didn't have to reassign any ringtone because I guess there already was data telling the iOS who to assign the right ringtone.

If you go to your phone app and then select contacts, then find a contact without an assigned ringtone, click on the Edit option and you will see in the edit screen Ringtone Default. Tap that and a screen will come up that says store. Under that option you will see Tone Store and Download All Purchased Tones. Once you hit Download All Purchased Tones, any you bought from Apple will appear. If you have any you made with a third party app, search for Ringtone from the finder window and open in Finder Window. Use the procedure above to drag and drop your third party ringtones. They will now show up with your alarms, text alerts, and contacts.

I am on a mac 10.12.6.and itunes 12.7.0I .just got my first iphone. It is an 8+. I tried all of the above, including converting the mp3s to m4r which I read elsewhere.

I tried dragging both type files (both from my desktop and from itunes) into the tones folder. Either nothing happens or I get a message xxx was not copied to the iphone because it cannot be played on this phone.

The ringtones play in my itunes on my mac and my ipad.

Can someone help?
