iPhone 8 GPS problems

On both Google Maps and Apple Maps, the gps doesn't seem to keep up. The apps start up fine but once I start driving the GPS becomes erratic and loses me. Both navigation apps can't seem to locate me unless I re-start the app over and over again. I thought it was a buggy iPhone 8 so I took it back to Verizon (where I bought it) and it was swapped out for a new one, and the new one started acting the same way the moment I hit the road. I haven't used any icloud backups, I set up both phones as new iPhones each time I activated them. I also factory reset my day old iPhone twice before taking it to the store for replacement. The replacement (new) phone has the same issue. Help!

This is happening on my iPhone X, even when it’s completely naked and I’m on foot. It never happened with my iPhone 6 Plus in the exact same conditions. So it’s not “environmental.”

This makes navigation difficult, but apps like Strava and Word Uncovered are completely unusable because the random jumping of my location messes up any route or distance calculations.

Are there any new phones that DO work? Thinking of trying to get a replacement but I have no idea if it would help.

They deleted my post because I didn't stay on topic. I'll recap just what happened to my phone.

1) Ordered iphone 10 in November

2) Received phone in December

3) GPS on iphone didn't work

4) I first thought it was because I was in Hawaii and gps was just not good where I was

5) when I came back to mainland it didn't work in Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, NYC and San Francisco

6) Store said they hadn't heard of problem

7) They changed out new iphone 10 for new iphone 10

8) They said if it doesn't work, go get a new sim card

9) It didn't work so I got a new sim card and it still didn't work

10) new sim card worked in my iphone 7 and IOS Maps worked in iphone 7 - not in iphone 10

11) I went back to store 2 days later and they gave me another new iphone 10

12) According to genius staff they have never heard of this issue

13) New and 3rd iphone 10 did not work either

14) I called escalation customer service and they said they have not heard of issue either

15) they were unable to help.

16) any ideas?

I’m being asked to install a profile on my iPhone X and provide some logs.

They are listening, but it seems as if it doesn’t affect all iPhone x’s as there are millions of owners who presumably use them for satnavs and haven’t complained.

Maybe it’s a subset of models?

Spoiler Alert if you haven't seen the movie 'Get Out'...

I'm having a problem with my Apple genius. By the title, I was sure that they would be at least above average for answering questions regarding the iphone 10 gps issues. Unfortunately, they are not geniuses at all. Apparently they are some type of human like droids which are programmed to deny serious problems with our iphone 10's. At first I thought my Apple genius was just a 'bad apple' but then, like in a zombie movie, more geniuses flocked to my table to support the message that Apple has never heard of issues with the Iphone 10 gps and IOS maps not working. I told them politely to read the apple community forums as 1000's of people had taken the time to post. Straight faced and calm as robots they pivoted and shifted the focus back to their perfectly working iphone 10's and that I was the first person to ever report this.

I thought that maybe it was just one store that had these droids but NO, I went to 2 other stores and they also used the same type of droids.

All of the droids make you start from complete ground zero so that you have to explain the story over and over again. I think this is some type of mind control techniques to get us to think that we are a) not really experiencing the problem or b) just get tired and mentally worn down and finally go away.

After the 3rd iphone 10 was changed out and also did not work, I called to escalate the issue as the in store droids could not help me in anyway and seemed to be programmed in a loop to repeat the same reasons over and over.

But then things got worse, their escalation department was notified and I was forced to repeat my story to much more saavy droids. This generation definitely had a more advanced algorithm and knew how to reason and confuse in a much more sophisticated way. Must be some new type of AI. After Agent F mysteriously went on vacation and didn't follow up on our first call, I began receiving calls from an even more high level droid. This one was what we will call the 'placation droid' and was very advanced in deflection methods and reverse psychology techniques. Agent Bob called 2 times on Friday, 2 times on Saturday and 2 times on Sunday randomly but with no solutions or suggestions other than providing me with a basic article from Apple engineers on how to setup GPS. He must have made me explain the issue 10 times and very convincingly tried to get me to believe that this was user error and that all of the people he knew had iphone 10's that had working GPS and IOS maps. I started to doubt myself as he continued to placate and at the same time use his advanced mind control tricks on me to the point that my mind began to spin and eventually I almost lost consciousness. All I could hear as I began to fade was 'we will never admit there is a problem but we want to fix yours'. (he actually said this) I don't know if you saw that movie Get Out where they hypnotize the main character and he floats into some sort of dark space but that's how his mind control felt. Fortunately, right before everything was turning black, the doorbell rang and my dog barked. Thank goodness for my dog! I love you Charlie!

Anyway, this post will probably get deleted but I wanted to put the word out as this could be part of Apple's bigger plan to take over the world. First they take away GPS and then they will control our every move.

This is basically how I've felt since November. The misinformation loop is mind-numbing; some people come on here and say I spoke to X number of people and they've never heard of this, others are with high-level support saying there's a solution in the works.

I still believe the most anyone will get at the end of their troubles is what I've gotten after 5 months of high level support, useless data logging, etc., which is the phone is working properly, there's something wrong with your X, Y or Z, but the phone itself is flawless and there's nothing we are going to do to fix our probably rushed, probably not thoroughly tested wonderphone.

HOWEVER, I would have really put a spoiler alert at the top for those of us who have yet to see Get out... 😁😁😁

Brilliant and witty post.

Indeed this is also how i feel.

My case has been escalated to some higher level tech support. But when I asked a technical question about the phone she replyed "ah sorry don't know i'm normally working on OSX"... Weird he.

Then the even higher tech support (the one when we Europeans finally get to speak to an American) seemed to have more capacity in cooling me down and making me wait than in helping me out. Just as if this was some sort of planned dmg mitigattion.

And every single one of them always heard my story for the first time. And seemed so eager to help. But never did.

Apple store Regent St London offered a replacement X which I declined on the basis that I’ve already done that and it made no difference. They said that as my replacement was issued so soon after my first X they may have been the same batch and a replacement now might be from a different batch and may be better. I said that as it’s apparently the first they’ve heard of the issue, then why would a newer batch be any different? The other “solution” was to refer it the sales support team. I was unable to glean the dictinction between this support and the Apple senior adviser and engineering dept I’m already waiting for a response from. Anyway I begrudgingly agreed and they said I should hear within the next week. They anticipate the advice will be to swap it for another X. Oh and as I purchased the X via the Apple payment programme, they will not refund it so I can get myself a 7. They are all very nice and polite, but it’s a brick wall.

One thing I find strange is that this issue, unlike many other apparently less serious ones, has not been noticed by the press. For example, the wirecutter is usually quite thorough and reliable, and gives the iPhone X a glowing review here:

Our iPhone X Review: The Smartphone of the Future: Reviews by Wirecutter | A New York Times Company

There are a few user comments there, including some negative ones, but no mention of the GPS problem as far as I can see. Perhaps someone here can post a remark about GPS to that thread. My own problem is "resolved", in that Apple cheerfully gave me a refund (I was within the two week period), so I don't want to do it myself.

Just thought I'd provide an update.

I had my iPhone X replaced by Apple.

The new phone I received is a bit better. The GPS dot does not jump like crazy or going around in circles like with the previous device.

However, it is still seriously laggy. When driving it's very easy to miss a turn and it shows you a few meters behind. If you take a turn it still shows you like you're going forward and then abruptly jumps to where you are supposed to be.

At this point I can only wait for a software update. If it's not fixed I am going to replace this with a Pixel 2 unfortunately. Too bad because it will be a huge inconvenience as my entire ecosystem is Apple.
