iPhone 8: crackling static noise during calls

It’s intermittent - on some calls you can perfectly notice it on others no problem. I have already tried resetting the phone with no success on solving the problem. I’m dealing with the issue since Friday. Very disappointed!

Does anyone has the same problem or knows how to fix it ?

Guys, Apple has already released iOS 11.3!!

I got a new device, installed the two updates (iOS 11.2 and then 11.3), hard rebooted my device and the speaker issue is gone. I am betting I didn't need to get a new device and just had to wait for the two updates.

iOS 11.2 had mostly fixed the issues and then was completely gone with iOS 11.3, but I had to do a hard reboot each time for some reason. Before doing a hard reboot the crackling noise was still there after doing the update.

Hope this helps 🙂

But, to be honest, I think this will be my last Apple device (I own the trifecta, MacBook Pro, most recent iPad Pro and most recent iPhone Plus). They come with such a huge price tag but they are no longer the industry leaders. The price doesn't seem worth it anymore because of that 😐

UPDATE:

I have installed the iOS 11.1 public beta and after several calls I have not experienced the crackle. I think there will be an 11.0.2 soon (next week?) or 11.1 will be out in a month.

It seems that it is a software issue as my calls are great now. Loving the 11.1 public beta... but if you are not used to beta software, even public.. I would hold off.. or make sure you understand how to go back to non-beta iOS.

Hope this helps.

PLEASE EVERYONE!

This is a known issue and Apple is working on providing a software update to fix the issue. Just wait. No need to keep replacing your units. If you are unhappy, then please just go return the phone and get your money$$ back and buy something else!

A solution is coming!

Changing phones will not guarantee you will not have the issue reappear.

A temporary solution that is working for some is to temporary switch on the Speaker and then you can go back to the normal speaker. Or always use the Speaker or use EarPods, AirPods, Bluetooth headsets or any wired headset.

File a feedback to Apple and know you will be covered if something does not work out via the Apple promised repair solution.

Please just wait!

Hope this Helps, Greg

My iPhone 8 Plus is having the crackling issue as well and I've only had it since last Friday. I know Apple mentioned they were working on a fix in a future update so should I hold off on the update and hope it works or return my device for a replacement at the Carrier or Apple Store? 😕 My only concern with returning it is I may get another device that does the same exact thing.

It does seem to be a software issue and not a hardware one from my testing however. I don't hear it while watching movies, playing games, listening to music, etc and when I experience the crackling in a call a temporary "fix" seems to be to toggle the speaker mode on/off a couple of times and it's gone for the duration of the call.

For some users changing between loudspeaker and back would get rid of the noise for that call, so I doubt it's the hardware issue. For me, the update solved the problem. Are you sure it's the noise you're thinking about, or maybe something else (e.g., defective unit)?

I would go to apple and get a replacement and update that replacement to the most recent iOS.

I’m also very disappointed to be experiencing this issue on my brand new iPhone 8 Plus 256GB. It is a high pitched crackle/popping in the top earpiece speaker during calls over cellular or WiFi using VoIP. Toggling speakerphone intermittently can solve the issue for the rest of the call. The issue persisted despite restarts and restoring to factory settings. Sadly a replacement handset also has the same issue. I rely on my phone for work and this problem is very distracting when trying to concentrate on callers.

I too have same issue. Just got iPhone 8+.

Whether incoming or outgoing calls, it gives some noise just like we get while tuning radio or transistor.

I had a chat with Apple support team, they tried various options however, no luck.

I checked with my retailer and it is been told that it’s a software issue and Apple is going to apply a fix on their next update 11.1 which is currently in beta.

Unfortunately the same here in Germany. I am with a new iPhone 8 Plus 64 GB. I can confirm that there is an issue with noise during (some) calls. I don't know if it's helpful but I noticed that you can fix this temporarily by switching to speaker and then back. I know that's not how it shoulöd be with a device that cost nearly 1000 Dollar, but I just wanted to share. Maybe it will help to find the reason.

Hopefully Apple is going to fix this very soon. Would be sad to return this, apart from that issue, wonderful device.

I got the same problem here in Spain, iphone 8 plus. I’ve tried to turn on the loudspeaker while in a call with “crackling” and after turning it off (and returning the phone to my ear) it seems to dissapear. I hope this problem can be fixed with an update but ... it remembers me too much like when using earbuds running in the gym on a machine that its not well grounded..when you put your cell on the machine and you run, you feel some “discharges” because of the static energy you generate as you run. Regards!
