Iphone 8 not wireless charging
I have a Chevrolet Tahoe that has a charging pad on the center console. Putting the iPhone 8 on the pad does nothing. I know the charging pad works because it charges a Samsung phone.

Re: My iPhone 8 will not work on the Qi charging mat in my Cadillac.
You're going from forum to forum on this defending Apple for a defect on a product you don't own, for a vehicle you don't drive. I'm not asking about some third party charger; I'm asking about something on the largest car manufacturer in the country. A company the size of Apple does have validation and testing. I am perfectly well allowed to be angry that something like this could slip through the cracks.
As a follow up to this, I found an article you might find interesting. It appears GM for model year 2017 did not use QI standard with their charging pads. They have changed this for the 2018 models. I thought you might find this part of the article interesting and supports why you can't use the charging pad with your phone in your car:
"Things get messy with General Motors brands, though as the maker starting including wireless chargers in its 2017 model line but those pads do not employ Qi standards. As such, only the following models at this time support wireless charging on the iPhone 8 and iPhone X.
Again proving your anger is completely misdirected.
I was researching this as well. Apparently there are WPC 1.0 and WPC 1.1 Qi certification levels and GMC pads aren't properly certified. Like others have stated - a GMC problem, not Apple. This is from Mashable.com - here is the link:
http://mashable.com/2017/10/24/cars-that-support-wireless-charging-list/#6nVJhwl Bbiqz which states in part:
General Motors vehicles are trickier. While some Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC models from 2017 and before are equipped with wireless charging, they do not, according to Apple, meet the requirements for Qi certification. This means to charge your iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus, you'll need a 2018 model.
The following are compatible:
For the uninitiated, Qi is a charging standard developed by the multinational Wireless Power Consortium. To gain Qi certification, devices must pass rigorous tests for compatibility with wireless charging products, resistance to overheating, and power transmission capability. All new iPhone models feature Qi wireless charging, as does Samsung's Galaxy lineup.
Sounds like these disgruntled new iPhone owners, myself included, needs to pressure GM for a recall. On GMC website, the state this about their 2016 - yes 2016 - models:
Fortunately, GMC’s Wireless Charging feature, available on the 2016 GMC Sierra, Yukon and the Yukon XL, helps keep phones charged without a cord.
WILL MY DEVICE WORK WITH THIS SYSTEM?
GMC’s Wireless Charging is compatible with PMA 1.0, WPC 1.0 or WPC 1.1 charging standards, meaning it can work with many Powermat and Qi charging accessories.
GM does not show iPhone 8 as a compatible or non compatible device on their supported list, but the do show the 6+ and 7+ as not supported due to their size. You would need to speak with GM.
In the mean time you have 14 calendar days to the return the device to Apple for a full refund if you are not satisfied with it.
I talked to a GM rep today about the problem. It appears the first reply here is correct. At this point GM vehicles with charging pads which they have been making since 2015 do not support Iphone 8's. Unbelievable to me that GM and Apple werent talking about this and couldnt get this right. Probably didnt help that Apple was so late with wireless charging. GM is "studying" the situation as I was about the 4th person to call in. I would have bought a lighter, less expensive iphone had I known this. The rep thought that it probably has something to do with where the coil is placed in the Iphone. Disappointing!
I just changed the water pump in my 2012 Traverse. I had to machine my own tools to do it so I didn't need to lift the block out of the front end - You need to take the front tires off to change the bulbs in the headlights - the alternative is pay the dealership for labor costs that would have included lifting the engine out of the vehicle and the cost to do so would net you an iPad Pro.
Are you seriously blaming Apple for GM's behavior?
Same issue here, but with a 2017 Chevy Silverado. Wireless charging does not work with the iphone 8 on the QI charging pad. This was the main reason I purchased the 8, so I returned the iPhone to Apple.
Hop off your high horse. My GM wireless charger works with the phones that wirelessly charged that were on the market when the vehicle was released. Were they supposed to have spec'd out the wireless charger for a nonexistent product at that time? The burden is 100% on Apple.
It's unrealistic to expect Apple to build a phone that works with every single charging plate on the market. It's likely not charging because the QI charging coil on your cars charging pad is not in the right spot for your iPhone. It's unfortunate the GM charging pad doesn't work with Apple iPhone, but you can't be mad at Apple or GM. They just don't speak well together. My 2016 Mercedes doesn't have a charging pad at all. Oh well, I'll just have to use the lightning plug or if I really feel QI charging is that fabulous, I'll buy an aftermarket QI pad for my car.
Regardless of the size of the company, if they are making a charger for an iPhone and they are not Apple, they are making a third party charger.
If if you think that Apple tests their devices with every third party charger out there, you’re quite mistaken. And why would Apple make their brand new phone backwards compatbile with older chargers? Why is incumbent upon Apple to do that? This is, of course, assuming that GM was telling you the truth.
Car manufactures have been doing an awful job of supporting cell phones for years and blaming it on the phone manufacturers. Mercedes‘s list of suppored phones used to run about two years out of date. Bluetoth made things a lot better but not perfect. Car manufactures tend to be slow with software updates.
LOL.....I'm not defending Apple anymore than I'm being critical of GMC. Your expectation that Apple would make a product that is retro-capable with your GMC which was made before the phone came out is ridiculous. But you own a car that has a charger that won't charge your phone. So what options do you have? Do you think Apple's going to redesign and replace your phone so it will charge in your GMC? Do you think GMC is going to replace the charging pad in your car to work with iPhone? Neither scenario is likely. Your anger over this is frankly childish.
The wireless charging pad in GM vehicles (I have a 2017 Silverado) is plainly awful. I've used multiple phones (S7 Active, S8+, iPhone 8) with it, and none of these phones charged properly with the rubber pad in the stock position. The S7A charged only if i flipped the pad upside down, the S8+ and the iPhone 8 only charge if i completely remove the rubber pad.
This is not an issue with Apple or Samsung. The problem is two GM things :
1) the charging coil is placed too low in the tray, so many phones can't line up with it properly.
2) the charging coil presumably has some 'smarts' built in to prevent some issues with people throwing change / other keys / etc. into the tray, so if you put a phone down and it starts charging, and that phone moves (if the pad detects some kind of movement or change in makeup) then the charging stops. in order to get it charging again, you have to remove the phone from the tray, wait like 5 seconds, and put it down again. Normal Qi pads keep trying to charge if it senses something there, regardless of movement. The GM pad gives up.
So GM puts a vehicle out in 2017 compatible with basically no phones that came out after 2015
The iPhone 8 charges just fine on any of my other wireless charging pads.
I have had two customers of ours, both with iPhone 8. Neither would charge on the Chevrolet vehicle wireless charging pads. However they did work when I tested them on my Samsung wireless pad at my desk (I am a Tech Expert at Cecil Clark Chevrolet in Leesburg, FL). It looks to be a possible phone issue, but I am not 100% certain as of yet. We have no updates released as of yet by GM. I would suggest, for now, to report the issue to Apple Support and hopefully we can get a solution released soon.
Based on what you just posted, I'm curious if the two phones charged just fine on a Samsung Charging pad at your desk, how you can come to the conclusion you think it's an issue with the phone? It would lead one to believe it's an issue with the charging pads in GM vehicles.
Bravo for Apple coming out with technology that makes cars from 2017 and earlier ancient technology. By the way when we bought one this week at the Apple store, the sales person somehow didn’t have a clue when asked if it would work on a 2017 SS Camaro. This isn’t misdirected anger BTW.
