macOS high sierra Finder not responding

Hi guys

I upgraded my operation system to macOS high sierra. After installation finished. I realised the file on my desktop is not showing up.

  • I clicked on finder, it is not launching.
  • I went to force quit, find out "finder not responding".
  • Third party app still working.
  • Searching in spotlight, file result still showing up. But click on the result, nothing happen.

I thought it was my mac indexing the data. but It's been couple of hours, still like this.

  • i have a lot of data
  • 15 inch Macbook with Touchbar
  • iCloud drive is turned on

Thanks.

MacBook Pro TouchBar and Touch ID, macOS High Sierra (10.13), 2TB 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7

I had this issue after upgrading to High Sierra on my September 2017 Macbook. After being unable to find a solution on forums etc I contacted Apple Support. They directed me to start in safe mode; which helped for a few days. After it occured again I contacted Apple again. They said there must have been an error during download and installation nof High Sierra. They recommended best solution would be to re-download and reinstall High Sierra. I didn't do it. After a while I decided to disable all "finder integration" for Dropbox etc. After that, Finder works fine. No lags, no lock-ups, no force-quits needed. I recommend that you disable all finder integrations for cloud storage solutions.

I've been following this thread since it started, as I have this problem on two iMacs with 12 external HDD.

One has been recently upgraded and had 4 new drives set up under High Sierra as a Striped, Mirrored RAID 10 array.

This new array was built 3 weeks ago, so waiting for journalling seems unlikely.

I've tried the log in & ouit of iCloud and Paragon off & on suggestions with no effect.

It happens on the new drives and the old,

For me the problem seems to occur on those directories with large listings.

If the directory is only a few files, irrespective of their size, then things go okay.

If the directory has lots, then hey presto - Finder unresponsive.

I'd hoped the latest update would address the issue, but nothing has changed.

When I get time, I'm going to try carving up a large directory into smaller units, but since this will lock up the finder, I'll have to use the terminal and commands.

Looking at the other rsponses on here this seems to be a pattern.

Has anybody else tried splitting their directories that are large into smaller pieces and have a feel for a threshold number?

I am pretty sure the issue is how the finder is dealing with mounted volumes and trying to update. It seems fir whatever reason it cannot cope.

I have had this issue mainly with sierra, with files visible and then not from one moment to the next.

The finder would panic and not come back up. A hard reboot was the only way to get it back.

My main mounts are smb.

On HS. I still get some issues with a particular mount but the others seem ok now.

Other protocol connection types may still be getting this in HS.

I love how this says "solved."

I have MacMini Server (mid2010) running High Sierra 10.13.3 (I believe, can open it cuz finders' crashed). I run a 2TB Firewire OR a 4 TB USB 3.0 Lacie External HD for Time Machine backups. They mount but don't back up. Just spins/preparing.

I am thinking the problem is pointing large file uploads/downloads via iCloud or other shared/online storage apps. I have been attempting to "sign out" of iCloud but it warns me of all the photos that will be deleted from my MAC if I do. It says they are stored in the cloud but I have been burned before.

I recently upgraded to a new 1TB SSD drive and used Mac Cloner to clone the data to the new SSD. I haven't been able to use Time Machine since and noticed the finder issue as well. Don't know if they happened at the same time, but it is coincidental.

I will force out of iCloud and report back what I find.

*** UPDATE ***

I rebooted and unmounted my External HDD's. No finder issues now. I am going to try to reconnect them and see what happens.

I've also been having this issue. I first noticed a problem when my external Drobo drive wasn't mounting, or even recognised. After a number of reboots, the drobo seemed to finally be seen in Disk utility and ran first aid (not sure if it did any good) and was able to mount it from there. After that I thought evrything was ok.

Untill I noticed my iMac wouldn't completely shut down. It would close out like normal, but once the black screen appeared, it would hang. Only a hard shut down would work.

Then the finder issues were discovered. On trying to mount the new version of firefox, the desktop would crash, spinning ball and no access to the file system. Relaunching Finder doesn't work, all it does is remove all the icons on my screen. Tired terminal to relaunch, with no success. So reboot time, you guessed it, won't shut down properly. Hard shut down required.

I've tried mounting other dmg's with the same outcome.

So I've tried a number of things suggested with no positive result including signing out of icloud, leaving the imac to "come back" after days, running etre check (says its running perfectly).

Right now I'm at a loss. My best bet is to hope that someone posts a new working solution, or apple acknowledges and puts up a patch upgrade.

***EDIT/UPDATE***

When attempting to turnoff just "photos" in the icloud sync, I get a message that icloud is updating...

It says I can turn off or continue updating. I am wondering if the update is stalling or freezing the finder when trying to sync everything in icloud.

I will have to force it to stop.
