macOS high sierra Finder not responding

Hi guys

I upgraded my operation system to macOS high sierra. After installation finished. I realised the file on my desktop is not showing up.

  • I clicked on finder, it is not launching.
  • I went to force quit, find out "finder not responding".
  • Third party app still working.
  • Searching in spotlight, file result still showing up. But click on the result, nothing happen.

I thought it was my mac indexing the data. but It's been couple of hours, still like this.

  • i have a lot of data
  • 15 inch Macbook with Touchbar
  • iCloud drive is turned on

Thanks.

MacBook Pro TouchBar and Touch ID, macOS High Sierra (10.13), 2TB 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7

I had this issue after upgrading to High Sierra on my September 2017 Macbook. After being unable to find a solution on forums etc I contacted Apple Support. They directed me to start in safe mode; which helped for a few days. After it occured again I contacted Apple again. They said there must have been an error during download and installation nof High Sierra. They recommended best solution would be to re-download and reinstall High Sierra. I didn't do it. After a while I decided to disable all "finder integration" for Dropbox etc. After that, Finder works fine. No lags, no lock-ups, no force-quits needed. I recommend that you disable all finder integrations for cloud storage solutions.

i am having a similar problem. I have been running high sierra on my late 2013 27" iMac for a couple of weeks already with out issue. Suddenly, i started having issues with finder where it would not allow me to open any finder windows. All i get is the spinning beach ball and I have to relaunch finder. It happened when i started into safe mode and it happens when i log in to a different user.

No, I didn't. I just installed the available updates for OS. My MacBook Pro kept freezing (Finder, the Dock and Menu Bar) whenever I tried to play any video or access an external drive. It also rebooted every 10 minutes or so.

I have just reverted to Sierra. High Sierra has been nothing but trouble for me; far worse than Windows Me and it makes Windows Vista look like a perfect OS.

Since reverting to Sierra, I haven't had a single issue.

That's funny, people said the same thing about Sierra.

And Yosemite.

And El Capitan.

And Mavericks.

And Mountain Lion.

And Lion.

After so many years and so many macOS upgrades, perhaps one would start to think their problems just might lie elsewhere? Noooo...

I have the same problem ever since upgrading. I tried signing out of iCloud, to no avail.

It works OK until I go to browse a large directory (well, not really, only about 13K files). The file list comes up, but the Finder completely freezes when I try to even browse the directory. I can force quit Finder and recover, but this system is nearly useless if I can't access those data.

Any other ideas? I've Google'd until I'm blue in the face but can't find anything. It started IMMEDIATELY after a FRESH INSTALL of High Sierra and persists after the 10.13.1 update.

Thanks.

This is very helpful information, thank you. I chased an tech issue with Apple recently whereby every time we deleted a folder / file, we were bounced back to the root folder. Tech support discovered the root cause was accessing via finder, and we solved the problem by using the "go" button (entering IP number). It seems finder is a poor solution to access files in general.

The latest solution I'm entertaining is getting completely rid of the concept of everyone accessing the same physical file structure. I recently moved from NAS to Mac because of similar issues, which worked great until High Sierra. We seem to be constantly chasing file sharing issues, so I am thinking of changing strategies.

My latest thought is to install an external drive on everyone's mac which will sync with shared Dropbox folders. The approach would be centered around everyone essentially working "locally". I'm interested to see how this might resolve all file sharing / finder issues going forward...we shall see?
