My iPad Pro keeps dropping WiFi signals

My 2017 IPad Pro 12.9 continues to connect and then drop WiFi connections. I can connect just fine with my iPhone 7 Plus as well as my MacBook Pro.

iPad Pro Wi-Fi, iOS 11

Some additional information, after talking to a network admin friend of mine: it looks like the routing tables in the iPad are whacky.

When it loses connection to the Internet, it can still get to nodes on the LAN on he same subnet (e.g., 192.168.0.1 can be accessed from an iPad at 192.168.0.2 subnet 255.255.255.0/8). My router, however, has an additional web server at 192.168.100.1 for other purposes. When the iPad loses connection, it cannot get to that IP address, as it's outside the subnet. Of course, that seems to encourage routing to figure itself out, and a refresh of the page resolves everything.

This doesn't seem to be isolated to iOS 11; my iPad 4 running 10.3.3 and my wife's iPad Mini running the last version of iOS 9 (sorry, don't have the device handy to get the precise number) show the exact same problem.

I have no delusions that Apple will care enough to fix this back in the old OS versions, or even release a tool that would manage to correct the problem once, but that seems to be what's needed.

Oh, this would also explain why a factory reset would solve the problem, as that would clear the garbage in the routing tables.

Hey jpcashdog,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.

I see that your iPad Pro keeps disconnecting from Wi-Fi. It's important to make sure that you can connect to Wi-Fi without any issues, so I'll be happy to help assist you with this.

It looks like you've already tried the steps that I recommend for this Wi-Fi issue in this support article: If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won’t connect to a Wi-Fi network .

Since you're still having this issue, I suggest a reinstall of iOS.

First, use this article to make sure that you have a backup of your iPhone: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Then, use this article to reinstall iOS: If you can‘t update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Note: This article is intended to be for a different issue but following steps 1-5 will help you reinstall iOS without erasing data.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Best Regards.

I’ve noticed that, unlike the iPhone or other Apple product, the iPad Pro’s wifi seems to automatically turn itself off when the iPad goes to sleep or when the wifi is not being used for a while (e.g., when the browser is on the same page for a long time). Normally, once a command is sent, the wifi turns itself back on again. However, sometimes it doesn’t and this seems to be what leads to the wifi drops. This doesn’t happen with the iPhone since the wifi is always on. Apparently, this is some sort of energy saving procedure on the iPad (which is totally uncalled for when the iPad is plugged in).

Sometimes my iPad 4 (currently at iOS 10.3.3, since it isn't supported by 11) drops "Wifi," but I can still connect to my router's setup page. In other words, the Wifi connection is solid, but it can't reach the Internet. None of these solutions help this. To add insult to injury, other devices (Samsung Galaxy S7 phone, laptop) can get to the Internet without an issue. My wife's iPad mini (iOS 9) has the same problem as my iPad, though.

I'm a software engineer, so I know a little about how these things work. What seems to be happening is that iOS tries to see if it can reach the Internet by attempting to reach a specific known site, probably an Apple site. If it can't for whatever reason within a certain amount of time, it logs a failure and assumes it cannot connect to anything. If this is the case, the only solution is on Apple's side.

What on earth has happened to Apple products? I have been a long time user ( over 25 years) and I never have had so many issues as I have as of late. Bought a new iPad to replace a perfectly good working tablet only to regret my decision. The new iPad 2017 will not maintain a solid connection no matter what i do. Reinstall the os..NADA, change router settings...NADA...nothing works and nothing ticks me off more than being in the middle of something and having a " connection error"..not only on my iPad but my iPhone ( after upgrading the OS) does the same thing. I can not even connect half the time anywhere because of apples security recommendations.. I am totally disappointed with this new iPad...I mean seriously Apple? Get with the program and fix these issues!!!!

Funny part is every other non Apple device we have works perfectly...All Apple products do the same thing..connection issues...

I’ve had this problem for over a year. I called Apple Support and they suggested that I re-install iOS. That worked for about a month. But now my iPad is once again dropping WiFi constantly. I don’t know what the problem is. Perhaps, as suggested above, the routing tables get screwed up and it takes a re-install of the iOS to clear them. If so, this still seems a rather tedious way to solve the problem since basically I’d have to reinstall each month. Why can’t Apple care enough to fix this issue??? It’s clear from this and many other postings on the internet that this is not an isolated incident and seems to be common with most iPad Pros. All of us paid a lot of money for these defective devices. My iPAD drops connection so often that it is basically unusable and I now just surf the web on my phone since the iPAD is almost guaranteed to drop WiFi several times in one surfing session. This is really bad Apple!!!! Shame!

This doesn‘t work. The real problem seems to be with the iPad Pro design itself. It’s a lemon. None of my other Apple products has this problem. Also, it appears to be particular to the wifi router being used. I’ve used my iPad Pro in hotels without a problem. But I use it at home or in another place that has a NetGear router and then there’s the problem. It appears Apple doesn’t know - or is unwilling - to figure out a solution, perhaps because it views the issue as being particular to people who use certain routers. But it shouldn’t be selling defective products as if they can be used universally when it is obvious that there is a SERIOUS compatibility issue. Also, since my iPhone and laptop don’t have these issues and it seems that other iPads don’t, why couldn’t Apple design its flagship iPad Pro to also not have this problem. This is a seriously defective product and Apple would do good by giving everyone a chance to return this lemon for a free refund.

Slight variation. My iPad Pro drops the internet, not the WiFi connection.

The WiFi connection to my router is stable, but the internet will be lost for 1-5 minutes and then will come back. Rebooting generally brings it back immediately. The router is a Google mesh system and my iPad Pro has the exact same network settings as my iPhone 7--which never drops the internet. My MacBook Pro never drops either. This is very annoying and is somewhat erratic. The iPad will function for several hours without a problem and then will fail several times within 30 minutes. It is particularly noticeable if you are streaming video as a program may freeze several times within an hour. Any known fixes?

Been around for a long time. I have two iPad mini 2s and have just stopped purchasing iPads. If you stream video espcially it goes out. Restarting the connection works for a time and I won’t reinstall the OS given it just returns. None of my other devices have issues, 2 Samsung J7 phones, a Nexus tablet, and a 2 Windows Laptops. Embarrassing really that they don’t fix it but honestly the 2 in 1 laptops give you more at a lower price point.

IPad Mini 4 has acquired this bloody awful habit recently. Today it wrongly reported no connection and inside an hour of the first dropout, said this time that no internet connection was available. Still inside normal working range and my ANDROID Galaxy phone remained(as it always has done) solidly connected throughout this farcical situation. Restored connection both times by turning WIFI off and immediately on again. Connection re-established both times. This machine is still inside warranty time and will be returned as not fit for purpose if this nonsense persists, ad I expect it to do so given that there are posts from last year on this site detailing this ridiculous issue. Apple still hasn’t patched this problem. What a surprise.

The more I use this machine, the more I wish I’d bought a high end Galaxy tablet instead. That way I’d not have to deal with Apple‘s apparently limitless Arrogance....

Underlining that this will most certainly be my final Apple product ever. If my DJI drones didn’t need the Apple version of their app to run my drones I’d never have had this one.... since the Android version of the same app lacks the Apple version’s reliability. Because DJI apparentlygot into bed with Apple in some sort of mutual-$-love agreement, they optimised their products to Apple’s platform.

Having been burned badly with an Apple powerMac many years ago - it was the most useless crash-ridden box of junk ever to sit on my desk - this iPad has made Apple’s record 100% lousy.

Underspecified, highly overpriced hardware that’s quite well built - but cursed with flaky software that produces more headaches than are bearable.

Off online now to buy a Galaxy tablet, and (if this thing can actually remain connected) I’m going to use the iPad to do so.

If it's any help, I don't think it's just Google wifi as I have an Apple Airport wifi setup and have this problem with my iPad Pro 9.7inch. It's driving me round the bend, and is particularly bad on video streaming. I even struggled to install a software update! Everything else works fine in the house, including my wife's iPad which is not a Pro model... is this a hardware issue with the Pro model?
