Canoscan 8800F (USB) doesn't work w/10.13

Just a note to folks, while my Canon 8800F scanner would work with the existing "Mavericks" drivers under Sierra 10.12.x, it doesn't work with the existing MP Navigator EX 1.0 under High Sierra 10.13 which crashes immediately upon starting. I've reinstalled the software/drivers and still the same (since the update uninstalled quite a few things anyway, i had to reinstall quite a bit of software).

Suggestions welcome.

Running on a iMac 21.5 2017 4k model. I.e. really new mac. Just testing update to 10.13, so far this is the one app (still reinstalling some) that hasn't worked for me.

I had to contact Canon about a similar issue with my Canon multi function printer. They were quick in reply (e-mail) with a link for new drivers for 10.13. Once installed I can us MF Toolbox again and can scan. If you do go to the Canon website and work your way to the driver downloads yourself, watch out for the box about what Operating System you are using. I thought it meant it would auto detect, wrong - you have to use the pull down and select 10.13.

I just got off the phone with Canon Tech Support. They said they are no longer supporting the 8800F. In fact they stopped supporting it after Yosemite which is the last time the updated their drivers and software.

The guy actually told me my best bet was to go to hamrick.com and see if Vue Scan would work with the 8800F. But Canon will not be coming out with anything to support this Scanner anymore, which is not 7 years old.

Too bad - I think it still works great. So I'll give Vue Scan a try.

I spent $33 on JustAnswer to find out what everyone else has been saying already hoping for a better answer. I did find a solution that may work for your printer, mine was a Canon Pixma MX410. Although it may be a little rudimentary compared to MP Navigator EX, it will still allow you to use your scanner with your OS 10.13 if it works for the 8800F:

1. Go to Systems Preferences and chose Printers & Scanners

2. Click on the Scan button at the top of the right hand box

3. Click on Open Scanner

4. Click on Show Details

From this window you can pretty much do whatever you need with your scanner. No need for downloading drivers, software, etc.

I don't think MP Navigator worked in Sierra.

You can download the demo for VueScan and it should allow you to continue to use your old scanner, but it's not free. You might be better off putting the money to a new scanner. I recently got a new Brother HL-L2380 DW B&W laser printer and scanner. Love it! No more buying expensive color cartridges.

VueScan Scanner Software for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux

Same picture here. I was happy as I made MP Navigator 1 working under Yosemite & Sierra although Canon refused continuing support for 8800F with those Mac OS versions. The skin of MP Navigator was intuitive for my family members. But those times are over now. What a pity.

VueScan works fine but I really do miss the ability of a simple to use (apple-like) GUI.
