Canoscan 8800F (USB) doesn't work w/10.13

Just a note to folks, while my Canon 8800F scanner would work with the existing "Mavericks" drivers under Sierra 10.12.x, it doesn't work with the existing MP Navigator EX 1.0 under High Sierra 10.13 which crashes immediately upon starting. I've reinstalled the software/drivers and still the same (since the update uninstalled quite a few things anyway, i had to reinstall quite a bit of software).

Suggestions welcome.

Running on a iMac 21.5 2017 4k model. I.e. really new mac. Just testing update to 10.13, so far this is the one app (still reinstalling some) that hasn't worked for me.

I had to contact Canon about a similar issue with my Canon multi function printer. They were quick in reply (e-mail) with a link for new drivers for 10.13. Once installed I can us MF Toolbox again and can scan. If you do go to the Canon website and work your way to the driver downloads yourself, watch out for the box about what Operating System you are using. I thought it meant it would auto detect, wrong - you have to use the pull down and select 10.13.

My update: I ended up running a virtual machine like I mentioned (sierra didn't work, 10.9 did, now i'm going to see how far forwards I can go with my virtual machines 10.10, 10.11...) and see if it will work with those too or not. My virtual machine of 10.12 didn't, unfortunately even though it had before like you and I mentioned. I have the luxury of VMWare Fusion license through work that I can run at home too though. I didn't want to buy VueScan if I didn't have to.

Note: once you install High Sierra, you're not able to download Sierra (or anything else for that matter) from the app store because it will say it will not run on your computer or with High Sierra. I had to download them on another machine I still had Sierra installed on. :-( So i'm archiving those copies for now for myself. I have the DVD's of the older versions (originals) as well.... Maybe i'll make a virtual machine of every OSX Just for the fun of it!

Not to bust your bubble, but Canon wants you to buy new hardware. Most likely their new products include an app that is similar to MP Navigator. Once a product is no longer supported it is highly unlikely any company will go back and upgrade the app so it works on newer systems. For any company, the app is only guaranteed to work in the version of macOS used when released.

I'm missing / can't get Yosemite (10.10), and all the later ones on VMWare didn't work. So far just 10.9 with VMWare Fusion worked. So that's what i'll be using for now... figures, i have all the other OS X versions except that one and it's not available for download from the app store. I'll have to check and see if i have it from a machine i have/had somewhere. If i do, i'll test and update on that.

That's great - even better. I wondered if my VM was preventing 10.12 from working (since it worked previously from 10.12 with the yosemite driver).

I haven't run Parallels in a while because they went into mode of charging and requiring an update for every single OS X update and now my university has VMWare fusion licensed for us- but I wondered - were you in cohesive mode, etc.? Just wondering which Parallels mode or did it matter?

Thanks for the update!

Your response seems inherently rhetorical and not helpful to the discussion (to me). It may be true, but it's a wasteful attitude by corporate companies and frankly, if we, the consumers, can find a way to make continued use of a product with an update of the operating system of the computer it's attached to - and i'm not talking illegally or anything, then we should do so. I refuse to add a perfectly good working scanner to the dump to add more waste to the world because of corporate profit bottom line. Just my thoughts and I think finding creative ways to continue to use products that are useful is a good thing to do, despite what the company wants us to do. The plethora of model numbers and features is confusing even to an experience computer manager/IT staff person - much less the lay person at home trying to find something that will simply just work and work reliably and efficiently. Like a toaster, right? Oh, dont' get me started with toasters! HA! Ok. A little humor there.

So that got me to thinking: does Canon have a recycle policy or and upgrade policy for turning in old scanners, getting a discount of sorts, etc. Apple does. APC does (I buy their UPC's, not much of a Tradeup, but it exists). What other companies do? I'd rather a productive response. Of course, you're getting pennies on the dollar for what you purchased, but at least (i hope) they're doing responsible recycling rather than us dumping this in the garbage, eBay, or whoever ever the plastic will contaminate the globe.

SO! It turns out they do: Recycling Program | Canon Online Store but this model is not listed as part of the program (found the 9000f, odd the 8800f didn't show up).
