Your response seems inherently rhetorical and not helpful to the discussion (to me). It may be true, but it's a wasteful attitude by corporate companies and frankly, if we, the consumers, can find a way to make continued use of a product with an update of the operating system of the computer it's attached to - and i'm not talking illegally or anything, then we should do so. I refuse to add a perfectly good working scanner to the dump to add more waste to the world because of corporate profit bottom line. Just my thoughts and I think finding creative ways to continue to use products that are useful is a good thing to do, despite what the company wants us to do. The plethora of model numbers and features is confusing even to an experience computer manager/IT staff person - much less the lay person at home trying to find something that will simply just work and work reliably and efficiently. Like a toaster, right? Oh, dont' get me started with toasters! HA! Ok. A little humor there.
So that got me to thinking: does Canon have a recycle policy or and upgrade policy for turning in old scanners, getting a discount of sorts, etc. Apple does. APC does (I buy their UPC's, not much of a Tradeup, but it exists). What other companies do? I'd rather a productive response. Of course, you're getting pennies on the dollar for what you purchased, but at least (i hope) they're doing responsible recycling rather than us dumping this in the garbage, eBay, or whoever ever the plastic will contaminate the globe.
SO! It turns out they do: Recycling Program | Canon Online Store but this model is not listed as part of the program (found the 9000f, odd the 8800f didn't show up).
Your other posts were informative with alternative solutions, I really did appreciate that. Thank You.
