SD card reader not working on high sierra

shut down the computer, unplug the cable, wait for 15 seconds, plug the cable, wait for 5 seconds, power on computer.

it should show up this time. this is the instructions given by apple support and worked well for me

Sounds like your issue is something else entirely (unless when you said you purchased a new card reader, you were talking about an internal card reader, which I doubt, as that's not a repair most people are willing to attempt). The majority of the people partaking in this discussion are talking about specific computers (mostly 2010 Mac minis) internal SD card readers (i.e. the ones that are built into the computer itself) ceasing to work after upgrading to macOS High Sierra. We're not talking about hooking up cameras directly (which seems to be the problem you're addressing). As indicated previously, my SD card (and others' cards) work fine when using USB card readers, it's the internal card reader on select mac models that's giving us grief. That said, I have a couple suggestions that might help rectify your inability to hook your camera up directly. Many cameras offer more than than one method in which it can communicate with a computer. If you haven't done so already, check your camera manual and see if there's an alternative method in which in can communicate with your Mac. It might be as simple as choosing the right method. Also, nowadays certain model cameras when hooked up to Macs no longer show up in the finder the way they used to. However, despite not appearing on the desktop, when you open your Photos app, it might still detect the camera (despite the lack of a traditional icon on your desktop). So try that too. Hope those suggestions help.

I upgraded to High Sierra 10.13.4. I was hoping this latest update would address this long-standing/widely-reported issue. Alas, the computer still won't detect my 2010 MacMini's internal SD card reader. 😟

Apple specifically listed the 2010 Mac mini as being compatible with OS 10.13 High Sierra. If they don't want to support it, then they shouldn't have listed it as being compatible. Apple's own update service urged me to "upgrade" to an OS that renders a hardware feature on its own device inoperable. They should back up their claim that the computer is compatible. I've emailed Apple about the SD card, but never received a reply. Downgrading is a huge hassle, and frankly, not a pragmatic solution. Sorry, Apple but you've given this Mac buyer since 1991 second thoughts about replacing this computer with another Apple product. This is really a poor business model.

I know this is a few months old, however, no one seems to have found a solution, and I have one.

The solution is very simple: don't insert the SD card fully. Insert it all the way but stop at around 1mm from the end.

This is caused by dust accumulation where the contacts are on the reader, a very hard blow or a whiff from an air compressed can should also fix it.

This worked for both my MacBook and my iMac. It's a great advice for your Macs and also great for your sex life too sometimes! 😀

I have the same problem. Just disconnect SD card and switch off the MacBook.

After reboot you can use SD card reader

MBP retina (mid2012) - the system does not see any Card Reader, neither with the card out, nor in. Do you have any suggestions what to do?

Those mini support has been dropped at Apple, obviously. I downgraded down to Mac OS Sierra and feel fine with it.
