verifying progress bar on every file.

Hi All,

I upgraded my software today to macOS High Sierra and it now seems whenever I open a file be in media or others I get a prompt about "verifying the file". I just went to use Zipeg and when I went to extract I got the same message again and it took about 5 minutes for the verifying file bar to go away.

Is anyone else having this issue? I'm hoping its a basic setting that I need to turn off but so far no luck in finding anything.

Thanks in advance.

Every step has been taken to do the checks you recommend you will see in this thread that that has been discussed. At this point and time No One should have to do a complete erase and reinstall.

I just had a 20GB file that took close to 20 minutes to verify. Which when doing so pretty much slows the computer down to a crawl. I couldn't even read any of these responses during that time as they would not fully load. Reading on other sites this was a known issue in beta version and nothing was done. I work with large files daily and this is really not acceptable.

Dear Apple Specialist.
I have now checked and YES, it is an issue also with the completely new Macbook Pro in Apple Store.

So, do we have anyone at Apple who is paid to handle such issues, or it is a responsibility of users who have imagined new OS will be able to perform basic OS functions, but were wrong? Maybe it's user's fault after all?

Let's be clear, there can be bugs in the new software, but not where it relates to basic functionality of the OS. That has to be tested before release.

Thanks.

Hello,

My name is Stefano and I write from italy, sorry my bad English. I have the same problem too. When I run very large files, such as mov in 4K, a message "Verify (file name)" appears, the expectations are very long. The message bar is called CoreServiceUIAgent. I contacted Apple support, but they did not fix the problem. They told me that he is known and will soon leave an update. I can not work with my 4K files, the expectations for vision are exhausting.

Thanks so much.

Hello, Huss417.

I understand that you're getting a message "Verifying the file" when you try to open a media file or any others. I may be able to help with this but I got a few questions to ask as well. Does this happen again after you open the file once? Also, are you using FileVault, Time Machine or any 3rd party security software?

I would also suggest going through these additional steps in the articles to help narrow the issue down, check them out:

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

Let me know if this helps.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

Hello, Huss417.

Thank you for going through all those steps. We'd recommend turning off Time Machine temporarily and repeat those tests to see if the issue still occurs. If the issue still happens, make sure your backup is current just to be on the safe side. Then, use this link for reference and reinstall macOS High Sierra: macOS Sierra: Reinstall macOS You can do this without erasing the data on your hard drive.

Let us know if this still happens after this step.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

Cheers!

My tests were also using SMB

You're one out of thousands (see other threads and Apple bug reports), so you deserve to put a flag "Lucky man" on your Mac.

Anyway, for the sake of this discussion, your message is quite useless, unless you report:

  • version of OSX you are using;
  • application you are using to play movies;
  • smb.conf and how are you mounting the share
  • if your Xprotect service is working and enabled;
  • whatever else may need us.

Hi joe_7399

Thanks for reaching out.

The "verifying the file" message comes up again even if the file has already been opened. I played around with this several times and on several files just to make sure. I am using Time Machine but no to File Vault and 3rd Party security software.

I also set up a Test Account and the issue still occurs there and the same in Safe Mode. Also I do not have SSD but HDD.

This has me stumped.

Best Regards.

I have the same issue on 2 separate machines and I suspect that everybody has it.

It apparently is XprotectService scanning the file. On local SSD 5.5GB file is scanned in few seconds, so smaller file may not even display the progress bar. But on NAS, the same file takes up to 5 minutes to scan.

SO, it just requires fixing. Checking can be done in Apple offices too, not only users need to test software.

Thanks.

The next question is if there isn't a fix for this how to we go back to the old OS?

The time involved with waiting and trying to merge video files is not something I want to be doing on a daily basis. I saw on another forum that some people in the beta version had the same issue so it was a known issue prior to the public release.

This time, Apple appears to have done everything possible to make reverting as difficult as possible.

My time machine backup which was fine just before, suddenly "fails" to restore (even it verifies OK, but "not able to transfer volume") and download of Sierra seems impossible too. I have tried even to use App Store framework, but get denied the download.

So, I would need to revert to El Capitan, which is not what I want to do either.

Finally, I am shocked that this kind of issue still has to be handled by the "support community". At times it seems that "support community" will soon need to actually write an OS which "just works", because Mac OS already does not.

Update on this issue:

According to Apple Support, this "verifying" is an "expected behaviour of the system". They are using some "completely new file type" and everything that is not this "completely new file type", needs to be verified.

However, Apple recognises that waiting 5 minutes for this verifying is not exactly how OS should behave and they are "working on it".

Finally, as this "behaviour" is known already since Beta, I wouldn't hope for any quick success. Obviously, developers do not have large files to handle.

Thanks for the update ron App.

I was going to call support yesterday but the day here took some unexpected turns.

I am going to call support this week and since I still have the coverage have them walk me through going back to Sierra. I can't work with this verifying bar. Another 100GB file of trying to unzip with the verifying and then transferring about 30 individual 2GB files each from it was driving me to drink.

Hello, I was able to get rid of this annoyance. 🙂

Just launch this command in a Terminal opened in the folder that contains the involved files:

xattr -d com.apple.quarantine *

It will delete the quarantine flag from file's extended attributes and the verification won't appear. Replace the * with a filename/pattern if don't want it to affect every file.

Hope it helps.

Hi widemos

Thanks for responding.

I read about doing this in another forum and this is what others have been saying after the step you are talking about. It seems like a temporary fix just for the files you do and then still reverts back. Also mentioned in this forum there is nothing in the new beta version to correct this problem. Some say a clean install but I don't plan on doing a clean install.

"it seems the workaround just work for the first time I open the file, the second time I try to open it, the verifying thing happens again...."

"Yeah same.. the unquarantine fix doesn't seem to stick. I gotta do it every time...... grrrr"

"Correct, all this workaround does is clear out the xattr that the system puts on a file. Aside from disabling Gatekeeper outright, there's nothing we can do to prevent the system or apps from applying the xattr again after you open a file."
