verifying progress bar on every file.

Hi All,

I upgraded my software today to macOS High Sierra and it now seems whenever I open a file be in media or others I get a prompt about "verifying the file". I just went to use Zipeg and when I went to extract I got the same message again and it took about 5 minutes for the verifying file bar to go away.

Is anyone else having this issue? I'm hoping its a basic setting that I need to turn off but so far no luck in finding anything.

Thanks in advance.

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13)

Hello, I was able to get rid of this annoyance. 🙂

Just launch this command in a Terminal opened in the folder that contains the involved files:

xattr -d com.apple.quarantine *

It will delete the quarantine flag from file's extended attributes and the verification won't appear. Replace the * with a filename/pattern if don't want it to affect every file.

Hope it helps.

Actually, Apple has to determine source of the problem, not user. Not only that, they even have to find the problem during testing phase. Anyway, thanks for checking out that on your system there is no problem.

Now there is another update - by doing a clean install (wiping the drive and reinstalling from internet recovery) I have managed to "fix" the verifying problem on 2 separate machines.

Turns out that Apple support were just telling lies to me, or maybe those were not lies but their creative thoughts. Quite disappointed, because had they told me that there should be no "verifying", could have had a working Mac way sooner.

Hello, Huss417.

I understand that you're getting a message "Verifying the file" when you try to open a media file or any others. I may be able to help with this but I got a few questions to ask as well. Does this happen again after you open the file once? Also, are you using FileVault, Time Machine or any 3rd party security software?

I would also suggest going through these additional steps in the articles to help narrow the issue down, check them out:

Hello, Huss417.

Thank you for going through all those steps. We'd recommend turning off Time Machine temporarily and repeat those tests to see if the issue still occurs. If the issue still happens, make sure your backup is current just to be on the safe side. Then, use this link for reference and reinstall macOS High Sierra: macOS Sierra: Reinstall macOS You can do this without erasing the data on your hard drive.

Let us know if this still happens after this step.

Update on this issue:

According to Apple Support, this "verifying" is an "expected behaviour of the system". They are using some "completely new file type" and everything that is not this "completely new file type", needs to be verified.

However, Apple recognises that waiting 5 minutes for this verifying is not exactly how OS should behave and they are "working on it".

Finally, as this "behaviour" is known already since Beta, I wouldn't hope for any quick success. Obviously, developers do not have large files to handle.

Unfortunately, after talking with Apple again, it looks like fix is not coming.

Apparently they now understand what is going on with their OS, and it's "intended". When asked who "intended" such a strange behaviour of the OS, they explained that it's "executives" and they are not challenging executive's decisions. Even they said they were "very sorry" for my lost workflow. Go figure.

After that, I was told that they have explained my "options" (to use as it is, or to roll back to El Capitan) and advised me to deal with it. Great advice, I would guess.

I have the same issue on 2 separate machines and I suspect that everybody has it.

It apparently is XprotectService scanning the file. On local SSD 5.5GB file is scanned in few seconds, so smaller file may not even display the progress bar. But on NAS, the same file takes up to 5 minutes to scan.

SO, it just requires fixing. Checking can be done in Apple offices too, not only users need to test software.

Thanks.
