iPhone calendar freezes in IOS 11

When adding an event in calendar, if you try to add a location, the screen locks up and you have to force close the app. I have done a complete reset and download of IOS 11 and still have the problem.

I had this exact same problem. I have an iPhone 7 Plus with iOS 11.0.2. (I tried everything - worked with Apple Support, Senior Advisors, Genius Bar and nothing worked).

I think I discovered how to fix the issue on my own. At least it worked for me. I noticed that whether I typed a letter or a number as the first character in the location field, it took a long time to populate the choices below (addresses, places, etc.). I thought maybe it had something to do with the Contacts data on my iPhone and that maybe there was an indexing issue. Here are the steps I took which resolved the problem for me:

I suggest being on WiFi for this process:

1. Go to Settings / Accounts & Passwords.

2. Under Accounts, select each Account to see which ones have Contacts turned on.

3. If you use Work (Exchange), this likely the issue. Turn off Contacts. When you see the message “Are you sure you want to continue? All exchange contacts will be removed from your iPhone.” Select “Delete from my iPhone”.

4. You will see a message “Turning off Contacts.” Once that is completed, turn Contacts back on. You will see a message “What would you like to do with existing local contacts on your iPhone?” Select “Keep on my iPhone”.

5. You will see another message “If you keep your current contacts on your iPhone, you may see duplicate entries. Are you sure you want to continue?” Select “Keep on my iPhone”. The reason you want to do this is that you may have created other contacts on your iPhone locally that are not in Exchange, so you don’t want to lose them.

6. Let the iPhone sync your contacts from Exchange. If you have a lot (I have almost 4,000), it will take some time (which is why I suggested being on WiFi). I suggest turning off your Auto-Lock (Settings/Display & Brightness/Auto-Lock/Never, then open the Contacts app (you’ll see the contacts populating) until all contacts are synced.

7. Then try creating a new Calendar item and type a location.

8. If you still see the problem, repeat the process with any other Accounts that have Contacts turned on (see Steps 1&2).

Let us know if this works for you.

I noticed this same problem a few weeks ago, probably around 11.03 update time. Just did 11.1 upgrade hoping it fixed bug, but still unable to enter address on appointment. I have 4000+ contacts from GMail account - suspect it is looking thru everything for match with first character of address. Not gonna try the "fix" of deleting all contacts & re-download - I don't trust Apple to leave GMail contacts alone, and don't want to risk my address book, and we shouldn't have to do such a dangerous thing to try to get around some stupid "hold your hand - with a hydraulic press" bug in system software.

Just converted from Android to iPhone 7 a couple months ago - not happy with how difficult things can be on iPhone. Back to Android on next phone. Already had to download Android maps and search, which are both better than iPhone versions.

I was reporting that even after the 11.1 upgrade, it is still resolved for me because I am still not seeing the problem on this iPhone 7 Plus like I was on my original 7 Plus.

In an earlier post I said “I ended up having a different issue with my iPhone 7 Plus (the Bluetooth had an issue). Apple replaced the hardware with a new iPhone 7 Plus. The new one works fine. I would have tried to delete the calendar app and reinstall it, but I never got to that point.”

It seems very odd that my original iPhone 7 Plus had the calendar issue, but when Apple replaced it with a new iPhone 7 Plus, it doesn’t have the issue. I have had it running 11.0.3 and now 11.1 and it has never had the issue. I also restored my backup from my old iPhone 7 Plus to this new one. I had tried everything with the original 7 Plus including restoring as new and it still had the issue.

I hope you all get this issue resolved because it was a real annoyance when I was dealing with it.

Don't waste your time. Apple has released 6 updates to iOS 11 and they cannot fix ANYTHING.

They are more worried on how to look beautiful (stores and Space Ship) under the command of the ifalable of Angela than having the new Air Pods, Home Pods, fixing the bugs and bathrooms and AC on the "temporary" 5th Avenue store. It seems to be that 268 BILLION in the bank and 900 BILLON in market cap has made them the new arrogant company with Hermes straps and no benches in the store.

Angela was good to see some Burberry coats, not 48 million phones plus other 38 billion dollars in the last quarter. Since she arrived to the company, service, supply and everything is a disaster. Maybe Woz was right when he said he rather use an Android. C'mon Tim show what you and the company are made of. Reflex on why Steve left you in charge. Don't fail to all of us. Have them work 24/7 and pay over time but for god sake fix all the problems. We don't need our X's just to look "beautiful" we need them to show why Apple is what it is. THERE ARE NO FIXES FOR THE BUG ON LOCATION!!! Copy paste from notes or maybe import from from the new Samsung you will send yourself an email and then copy>paste. 1500.00 plus of garbage. But don't worry get an Hermes strap and roll the X on the street like the leashes Hermes does for dogs.

Whomever wrote " Solved" on this post, is generous. It should have a status called "good work around". This is clearly an Apple engineering problem to solve, not @Seerseer's problem to solve. @Seerseer is just a kind user. Apple should take care of this. This is the "killer app" of the iphone (calendar). Messing this up is how Palm went under (they tried to compete with blackberry on calendar invites). If every time I book a sales lunch, or dinner, I have to go thru this freeze jaZZ, it will add anxiety to my day. A good reason to get off IOS. I cannot believe Apple has not yet solved this, but it could be a core architectural rate limiting issue. Their own internal location search engine is crashing their calendar app. It is not a good problem to have (freezing is not good behavior for any end user compute device). If we all have to put ZZ into the location, Apple should have that as their default location. Frankly, I should open a restaurant called ZZ and every salesperson on the planet will go there. Then I could figure out whom is selling to whom. Hmm. Thank you @seerseer for your work here. Now I can go to sleep: zz...

My Calendar freeze is no longer an issue because I:

IMPORTANT: First backed up my Contacts and Calendar within my Outlook 2016 in case the following procedure erased them:

Created a Microsoft Account through my browser

Added the Microsoft Account in IOS

Added the Microsoft Account in my Outlook 2016

Copied my contacts and calendars to the MS Account

Switched all IOS sync options ON for the MS account

Tested changes made to Calendar and Contacts synced OK

Switched off iCloud sync in IOS for the iCloud account

Uninstalled iCloud from my PC

All working well!

Calendar, Contacts, Tasks all syncing reliably

Notes sync is also switched on for the Microsoft Account in IOS but we all know that Apple withdrew Notes Sync some time ago for reasons known to themselves, except to iCloud, annoying many customers.

Farewell iCloud sync
