If you buy the TMobile version it will be locked to TMobile even if you pay full price. TMobile can unlock it but if you do not have an account with the carrier, the standard unlock policy would not apply.

Verizon is a different case. As a result of an agreement with the FCC all Verizon LTE devices are unlocked. If bought at a US retailer rather than the Apple Store or Apple.com the Verizon model is subject to the US Resellers Flex Policy and will lock to the first carrier on which it is activated.

For immediate international use, the sim free model from the Apple Store (if indeed a sim free version is offered) would be the best choice.

Verizon would be the next best alternative.

All carrier-branded phones are specifically intended for initial activation on that carrier. Alternative initial activations are subject to risks that can lead to unintended consequences.

I second this... A T-Mobile iPhone (including the iPhone X) purchased from Apple.com at full price (meaning no payment plans and no T-Mobile account info being given) arrives fully unlocked.

Essentially, the T-Mobile version is the current "SIM Free" GSM version until the official one is released. The only difference is that it arrives with a T-Mobile SIM pre-inserted...

That being said, in the current absence of a SIM Free version, one would be well advised to choose the Verizon version as it has all the same LTE bands as the GSM only version but also supports CDMA (in the case you would ever need that in the USA).

********

Regardless, if GSM is all you need, iPhone X model A1901 is your friend..

If I understand you correctly you have availed of the recent change in policy on Apple.com for the iPhone X and want to know how it will work in terms of simulating buying a sim-free version of the iPhone X if such a model actually existed.

To use the famous saying, "predictions are hard especially about the future."😀

That being said:

1) it should work as you intend if you activate it with your AT&T sim

2) there are reports (Howard Forums, if I recall correctly) that it has already been done

3) you can test it yourself easily. After activation with the AT&T sim, simply insert a Verizon, TMobile or international sim (Truphone for instance) and see if it works. You can also test it on Sprint but there are additional hoops to jump through to do that. If any of these tests fails to meet your expectations, you have 14 days to return the phone.

I'm afraid that you are incorrect. If you pay full price for a T-Mobile phone from apple.com, it's fully unlocked and can be used with any compatible carrier. I have purchased them myself several times straight from Apple, including the iPhone X, and they are indeed fully unlocked. The only T-Mobile phones that are locked are ones that you buy directly from T-Mobile.

ok. I understood the first part! but this means that once I activate my iPhone with Verizon I will not be able to unlock the phone even after having paid it completely ?

No, it means if you buy a phone from someplace like Best Buy, it will lock to the first provider you use.

Phones purchased directly from Verizon are unlocked. However as deggie notes, Verizon won't sell you a phone without activation.

Your best bet is to purchase it in the European country where you live. You need to define "soon", right now the iPhone X is scarce in the US and the T-Mobile version, which is the one you will need to purchase from an Apple Store as it is unlocked and doesn't require current service, is the scarcest. You also will need to return to the US if you need a warranty replacement.

Understand, that as a business traveler, and I'm guessing that you are referring to traveling internationally, different versions of the phone support different cellular bands, and may not support all of the cellular bands in different countries. Also, you will need to return to the US for warranty service. But I still believe if you make the purchase with the AUP, you need to be a current Verizon customer if that is the one you are going to pick. An actual unlocked SIM-free version has not been announced yet for the iPhone X.

"If bought at a US retailer rather than the Apple Store or Apple.com the Verizon model is subject to the US Resellers Flex Policy and will lock to the first carrier on which it is activated."

By saying this, do you mean if I purchased the phone directly from Apple.com, it's not subject to the US Resellers Flex Policy and no matter which carrier's SIM I put into the phone for activation, it won't be locked to that specific carrier?

Reason I'm asking is that I have a Verizon iPhone X on the way shipped by Apple, and I chose the "Activate later with your carrier" option when I placed the order. Becoz I use AT&T here in the US but I am also an international traveller thus I need CDMA capacity. When I receive the phone, can I use my current AT&T SIM to activate? Will it be locked to AT&T which then prevents me from using other SIM? Also will I be able to activate the phone using a foreign SIM?

I know the best way for activation would be using a Verizon SIM in order to prevent be locked, but to do that I'd need to bother one of my coworkers who uses Verizon...

My brother doesn’t hv a Verizon account so he bought I phone x (Verizon model) at full price from Apple store. Is the phone is unlocked? Can I use it in India without any problem,by taking out the inactive verizon sim present in it and replace it with my vodaphone carrier?Or is it necessa for him to activate the basic setup of the phone with the inactive Verizon SIM which is present in the phone and then ask my brother to bring it to India in order to use it here.
