If you buy the TMobile version it will be locked to TMobile even if you pay full price. TMobile can unlock it but if you do not have an account with the carrier, the standard unlock policy would not apply.
Verizon is a different case. As a result of an agreement with the FCC all Verizon LTE devices are unlocked. If bought at a US retailer rather than the Apple Store or Apple.com the Verizon model is subject to the US Resellers Flex Policy and will lock to the first carrier on which it is activated.
For immediate international use, the sim free model from the Apple Store (if indeed a sim free version is offered) would be the best choice.
Verizon would be the next best alternative.
All carrier-branded phones are specifically intended for initial activation on that carrier. Alternative initial activations are subject to risks that can lead to unintended consequences.
There is a report that over the weekend a Verizon phone purchased with no account information at the Apple Store was activated without any issue on Virgin Mobile which is a Sprint MVNO.
This is rather interesting since Virgin Mobile does not support BYOD for the iPhone X and Virgin Mobile has not been able to fill any of the pre-orders its customers placed at the beginning of the month.😕
ok. I understood the first part! but this means that once I activate my iPhone with Verizon I will not be able to unlock the phone even after having paid it completely ?
Im a Verizon customer, And I bought the Verizon iPhone X through the Apple upgrade programa..
Thank you for that information, but much of my information still holds true for support of other country's cellular bands. Good luck with your device.
Sweet! that is the answer !!! thank you very much.
as a business traveler I will need a unlock phone with the GSM side not locked, just like you said. so, now everything is clear for me.
I don't know why things are not clear when yo talk to the guys from Verizon. they answer in circles, with out give you the right information. that is why I found apple iPhone upgrade program more attractive.
Thank you very much again.
