Yesterday iPhone storage was taking 11/64gb, after reset/restore back to 9gb, 2days prior to that my game (it downloads1.5gb in game ) was asking for 46mb, which deleted email/photos, then the next day it was asking for 1446mb at which point i deleted a game(1.5gb), i noticed the 9/64gb increased to 11/64gb, its clear as you delete things the iPhone storage doesn't delete them properly causing system storage to increase unbeknownst to me. After 1hour chat with apple support they kept telling me to, restore again as new, then if it doesn't persist its a software issue, furthermore to install every app/game, one by one to figure out which is the problem, no matter how many times i told them, it wouldn't persist just did a restore and its an iOS issue, they wouldn't believe me, kept repeating to state to restore, i told them they should be asking me to delete things is a good troubleshooting step, to which he said you can delete apps/games, one by one and if it stops please contact the manufacturer of app/game...! Completely useless support who kept telling me they'd help! Moreover if apple can slow down old iPhones then you better believe they can tie up our storage so we have to buy more! Conspiracies!
The "Other Files" are the iOS system files. I guess the iOS has a bug that doesn't delete the previous versions files and it keeps "hoarding" it on the phone memory. What I would advise you to do is back up to iCloud and then erase all content and settings to factory settings. Then you set it as a "new iPhone" and after all done, you go to settings and check the space. The system files (Other Files) are likely to be reduced to somewhere around 5 Gb. Then you reset to factory settings again and restore your backup.
It worked for me. My "Other Files" was reduced in size from 15.2 Gb to 6.2 Gb..
I have the same issue on 11.2.2 and it was there on 11.2.1 also. Installed 11.2.2 in the hope it would fix it. It started three days ago where my photo library showed 0 photos even though “Storage” shows GBs used by photos. iPhone 6SPlus wouldn’t let me even take a photo at one stage. All my message history was blank as well and it seemed that all apps that had a history took forever to load as it appeared the historical data was inaccessible so it was download added from the server (WhatsApp). This seems to be an iOS bug but what confuses me is that my phone was fine for weeks on iOS 11.2.1 and all of a sudden it has gone this way. I have wondered if Apple Car Play may have something to do with it as I used it more over the last three or four days than previously. Apple fix this please!
Facing the same issue. iPhone 6, system/other is taking up more than 8GB on 16GB in total. Erased all on my phone and restored from backup as per others suggestion here. Made no change. Also removed website data which made no difference. What is it that is taking up this much space? Removed all pics/videos very recently and updated to 11.2.2 just now which also made no difference. Please, anyone got any idea what to do here?
Thanks,
Peter
This is a very unhelphul answer. See all continued issues below. I myself now restored as well as updated to 11.2.2 on top of removing all Website data. Made very little/no difference for me. Still looking at more than 6GB (out of 16GB) in System/Other. Crazy much.
Peter
What a condescending, useless answer.
If you have a 32gb drive and 28gb of it is being taken up by “system” then clearly it is by all objective measures taking up too much room. What system needs 28gb??????
I’m not at all a conspiracy theorist but it’s pretty clear that this is bloatware to prompt you into upgrading.
The problem that im having is even after a hard restart and not installing any apps, the phone still shows “Other” as taking 1/3 of the space in the phone and that’s a lot of space, i even tried deleting the apps that come standard on the phone just to finde out it did not make a difference. This is disappointing because I deleted everything on my phone to fix this problem and all it did was give me 2GB more of storage and I only have 16GB total so now instead of taking up almost half of my storage its taking up 1/3.... the strange thing when I connect to iTunes on my Mac it tells me that other that Other is 0GB so what dose that mean and why is that happening?
SO I’m finding that after a hard reset, system first takes up 7GB, I called Apple they said usually system is 8GB accord to them, that’s almost half of are 16GB.
After the hard reset and downloading a few apps NOT Facebook or any type off apps like that my system went down to 5 something GB and now has dropped to 4 something GB.
I can’t rap my mind around why the system would have dropped all of a sudden.
If anyone can look in to this that would be great.
This is literally the problem i am having right now, my 64gb iphone is showing 43gb of "other" storage. Did you already fix this problem? If so, how did you fix it? I'm really frustrated about this tbh
How did you make that assessment, that it isn’t taking too much space? You don’t appear to be provided an unbiased answer and then you contradict yourself. Should you have not sought clarification questions before making that assessment and recommending that course of action which you them deeemed unnecessary.
System uses 7GB. WTH. With each and every update iPhone is being more and more irritating. Android becoming more and more simple and they are making iPhone more and more irritating n full of errors . iPhone 6S .
I just bought a new iPhone X with 11.2.6
256gig
My restored files were 22g. Three days later there was an alert that storage was too full. It said that system was using 230gig. What?
I restored last night and so far sustem just using 7 gig.
I’d love for Apple to comment or address this.
I’m having the same issue. I have a 32gig I pad. I had 5 movies which had left me with around 2gig prior to my discovery of the ”system” eating through my space. I deleted one movie which we’ll say was 5gig and at the time I thought “other portion” contained 4gig . Well after that one movie was deleted I found that 2 days later when I tried to download another movie there was inadequate space. Somehow system is now taking up 11.37 gig and I have less then 1.8gig remaining.
