FTP No Longer works in High Sierra?

I use a Bizhub C250 and updated to High Sierra. It is now impossible to connect over FTP for scanning.

This is a big expensive scanner I use for my business and everything has come to halt until this is fixed. Why in the world did they remove FTP from the OS? Is there some way that I can get it back?

Has anyone else encountered this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes there is a small trick, we had to do lots of troubleshooting as well, but it is a very simple thing.

When you set the Server Root, you are choosing a folder on your computer to store the FTP transfers.

BUT

If you go to your scanner and choose the root folder for the FTP transfer of your scan, it will not arrive.

That is because the scanner is looking for a folder INSIDE the root folder, but the root folder is empty. So, my setup is:

The root folder is called "Scanner" and I chose that folder in the FTP app as the Server Root. In that folder on my computer, I put a folder called "scans". This is where the scans will go.

On the scanner, you need to setup FTP using the correct port like you did in the app, then you need to choose where the files will be sent. This is where you set the folder as /ServerRoot/FolderName

for me it was: ~/scanner/scans

Hopefully that helps!

Solved for me using the Dell 3115cn in my case as the scanner. I started with this thread to get to the final solution. I too fell foul of apple removing the FTP capability in High Sierra. I followed advice given here and used the FTP server app, but had a couple of further fixes to apply in my case that may help others. I found the Dell troubleshooting page helpful on the error codes How to Troubleshoot Unable to Scan Over the Network on the 2135cn / 1355cnw / 3115cn / 2355dn / 2145cn / 2155cdn / C3765… This helped me track down the two issues I had in turn. My first issue was a log in issue (016-781 SMB/FTP Error). This actually turned out to be my anti virus firewall blocking the login. Don't know why this wasn't an issue before the High Sierra upgrade but you may need to make sure you allow the connection through the firewall. I turned it off to test in the first instance. Then depending on your software you can tweak from there. Then my second issue was a folder path issue. (016-783 SMB/FTP Error) This was solved using the advice in this thread, by removing the server path name from the scanner settings and only populating in the FTP server app. I Changed the port as advised in this thread from 21 to 5000 (In my case following the Dell allowed range) as port 21 no longer supported. Double checked folders were shared on the mac and remote connections enabled in the sharing settings. Then all was good again. I do hope this helps some of you if still struggling. Matt
