Yahoo email not working in mail app with iOS 11

My yahoo email is not updating the inbox after I upgraded to iOS 11.0.1. The junk (spam) email still works but not the inbox. I have removed it and rebooted several times. The yahoo mail app works fine but I do not want to use it permanently. Any thoughts?

I've been having this issue for the last two iOS updates so I find it hard to believe it's a Yahoo! issue. Something Apple changes seems to be causing issues with the ability to get email. Not Happy!

I could finally add back my account after rebooting the phone. So back to square 1 (or 2).

  1. I had issues so first I added 'Security Key' - as suggested by Yahoo Help - did not help.
  2. Next I tried this app specific password - could not implement it. I think if you already have security key setup - it forces you down that path. Also App password and Security Key seem to be similar concepts- so probably one or the other. Did not help
  3. I have another yahoo account - have done nothing with it. It has similar issues as my other account. So trying all these has made no difference.😕

But my issues are sporadic and brief, unlike some are reporting permanent and long. For me these issues happen about once a week (or less) and last for a few hours to a day- then back to normal. I have backup Yahoo mail app.😀

Problems started last night (Nov 10) as well. Sent email from yahoo at 5:10, tried to send another about 5 mins later and it failed. Deleted account & reinstalled, hard reboot phone, update to 11.1.1, Yahoo Mail app works, re-installing Yahoo account in iOS mail works, but it will not send an email from iOS Mail, because “username or password incorrect”. Go into account settings and there’s no place to enter a password. Very frustrating. Several other issues with new 11 update. Not happy with Apple now. But still hate Google more.

Solved it, at least for me. I deleted the yahoo account, and set it up manually. Since I can’t paste to this site, you’ll have to look up the settings yourself. I searched “Yahoo doesn’t work with iOS mail”. You should get a response with SLN3702 as part of the title. I used info from there (a Yahoo website I hope) to get it setup. I can now send emails from my Yahoo Acct using iOS mail app.

My wife started complaining of this issue this morning, then when I tried to send her a test email, my iPhone 5s started doing exactly the same. Now we can both receive emails but not send. Weird that it's only just started when emails were working fine until now. Tried several recommended setups, but no luck... Anyone got a solution for this yet?

This morning (Nov 11) I also started getting problems sending yahoo mail with iPhone Mail app. I get the same thing: "The username or password for Yahoo is incorrect" - restarting, deleting and re-adding account both failed to help. If I use the Yahoo Mail app I can send and receive just fine. I think it must have to do with Yahoo, as I have not loaded any iPhone updates recently.

Oh - I also had to respond to an email from Yahoo and change my yahoo settings (on my computer) to allow "less secure apps": "Your account is currently not enabled to sign in from apps that do not meet modern security standards (ex. Older versions of mail and calendar apps such as Outlook). As a result, we prevented a sign in to your Yahoo account (ssancetta). "

Thanks. To summarize my magic formula (btw, Yahoo app works fine for me, too):

1. Delete account from iPhone and re-add, choosing "other" instead of "yahoo"

2. use imap (not pop), use imap.mail.yahoo.com and smtp.mail.yahoo.com

3. specify my FULL email address as the username

4. when yahoo sent me an email about a "insecure app" trying to access my email, I followed the email instructions to turn on "allow insecure access".

Yes. Exact same issue that started last night. Gmail is OK, but cannot send from Yahoo.

My wife has the same setup and is not having issues sending. Only difference is she has a 6S and I have a 7Plus but both on ISO 11 and using the app. Hard one to figure out but I did not change anything on my end before the issue started. Same issue on my ipad pro as well. Everything sends OK from the web site.

My wife and I both had the same issue, here how we got full function (send and receive yahoo) of our yahoo account in Mail back:

Settings >> Accounts & Passwords >> Yahoo!>> Account >> Outgoing Mail Server SMTP >> Other SMTP Servers:

Host Name: smtp.mail.yahoo.com

Full User Name

Full Password

SSL on

Port 465

Good luck!

This fixed it! Delete the yahoo account. Put it back as an “other”. Use the setting as posted above. And be sure and go on the computer yahoo account under user name/security settings and check allowing an “unsecure app to have access”. After set up can go back and change that setting. VERY INTERESTING, this happened after I upgraded wife’s phone to 11.1.1. But it also, at the same time then had the same bad effect on her old iPad running IOS 9, even though no changes were made to the iPad. After fixing as above on the iPhone, the iPad now works as well.
